Reviews of Alton Avenue, Magill
"Hugely disappointed!"
We're new to Adelaide and getting our feel of different areas before committing to buy. We moved from St Peters because we felt very isolated there (though the area was beautiful) and we heard Magill was multicultural and had a 'good community feel', but we feel very let down now that we're here. Thank God we decided to rent first! We've just been here 2 months and are already planning to get out as soon as soon as we can. Its like living in a morgue, amongst a lot of lifeless zombies. Being on the bus to work is the same - if I say hello at the bus stop I get ignored, or at best people look startled, in a slightly irritated sort of way. If you like high fences and never want to see or interact with your neighbours then it will be the perfect place for you.
The only good thing I can say about Magill is that our house is quite nice - except for the fences - and good rental value.
Great for
- Good bus route into Adelaide CBD
- Good organic shop nearby, with friendly service!
- Perfect if you like total isolation
Not great for
- Unfriendly neighbourhood
- High fences everwhere
- Extremely conservative - no interesting people

I grew up in Geoffrey Street (1 block away). I agree with your assessment. It was originally a new subdivision from the early sixties and wasn't friendly in the seventies and eighties when I lived there. The houses were ugly. It was struggle street and sometimes could be a bit violent. My mum still lives there and it is not any friendlier. Gentrification has helped a bit, but for some reason the other side of Arthur Street is much nicer, as is north of St Bernards road. That area near Alton Avenue just feels so blasted and exposed, just the same now as when I was a kid.
