"Picturesque Adelaide Hills Living"

Quiet, lush, with plenty of wildlife. Friendly but quiet neighbours, very safe - no need to lock the home. Not much to do but close to everything thanks to the freeway. Large properties with lots of character and variety but tend to be high maintenance. Very, very cold in winter. For the price, this must be one of the best locations in Australia for anyone that likes the Adelaide Hills lifestyle.

Looking for a home in Bridgewater?

"A pretty, leafy, rural place to live."

I have always enjoyed the peace and quiet of living in Bridgewater. I live on Onkaparinga Road (the part that swings away from freeway) and it is a quiet neighbourhood. We really hear minimal freeway / train noise, which suprised me when we first moved in, as we are not far from the freeway.
Being so close to the freeway makes for a quick trip into the city. My husband works in the city and it takes him 20 mins to work (except around Clipsal race time!). My kids go to school on the plains and it takes us 20mins max., to get to school. Some Mothers at school, complain that it takes them longer then that to get to school, due to all the traffic down there, even though they live a lot closer. Shopping in and around Bridgewater is good. The large Coles supermarket at Bridgewater is reputed to be the cheapest in the hills and it has a very good range of products unlike other supermarkets in the area. Mt Barker has a good range of shops and services and is only 10-15 mins away depending on where in Mt Barker. Stirling and Hahndorf also have a range of shops and services and are only 5 min away. They also have some excellent cafes and restaurants. If you have small children there is a good kindy in Bridgewater (on Onkaparinga) and Mt Barker has a good Kindergym as does Uraidla. The kindy also has a playgroup but I went to the one at the Bridgewater Uniting Church. It is a fantastic, friendly playgroup, where after the sing-a-long, the volunteers (there are usually 6-8 of them) play with the children or help the older ones with craft, while the Mums get served a cuppa and cake. Lush! The nearest vet is in Aldgate, as is the local Salvo's shop which is good for a mooch or to off-load gently used clothes, bric a brac or furniture, after a declutter. Oh for a word on the koalas. I have lost count of the number of time we have had a koala or two or even three in the backyard. We have some great photo's. It's lovely to have the wildlife around and the kids think it's fantastic. Housing in Bridgewater is also more affordable than some surrounding suburbs, yet you still get all the same community benefits. Anyway, I can highly recommend living in Bridgewater.

Great for

  • Good rainfall.
  • Short trip to city using the freeway.
  • Cooler in summer than on the plains

Not great for

  • Cold winters

"Bridgewater - Affordable, Safe & Friendly & only 20 minutes from Adelaide's CBD. Hills Living at it's Best!"

Town History of Bridgewater

Bridgewater Mill - Waterwheel

The village of Bridgewater came into existence in 1840 when an inn was built at the fording point where bullock teams crossed Cock's Creek. It was originally known as Cock's Creek. This became corrupted to Cox's Creek and when, in 1859, John Dunn - a miller - built his beautiful mill across the creek (it was powered by the huge waterwheel which is still such a distinctive part of the village) near the coach road through the hills, he changed the name to Bridgewater.

No one knows the exact origin because there was a bridge across the water at the time. However it is more likely that John Dunn, who had emigrated from the village of Bridgewater in Somerset, simply decided to name the fording point after his old home.

Today the village is a pleasant retreat from the heat of Adelaide. It has a distinctly English feel to it with pleasant European gardens and plenty of deciduous trees along the creek.

"True Hills atmosphere"

For a taste of the real Hills spirit you should come to Bridgewater. Small, lush, relaxed and off the radar for big developers. And important: probably (still) the most affordable town in the Mt.Lofty ranges. We moved here in May'10 and were pleasantly surprised with how many other young families have settled here. Only 20 min from the city, but its a completely different world. We love it here.

"The prettiest Village in the Adelaide Hills"

Having lived in the Adelaide Hills for 30 years and travelled extensively in Australia and Overseas one can only say Bridgewater is "A piece of Heaven". The view over the surrounding hills to Mt. Lofty is spectacular, the native vegetation which envelopes the area is pure Australian rich with breathtaking native flora and fauna. Breathe the Eucalypts and fresh air and join the people walking or jogging around this paradise and you will find it hard to believe that it is only 15 minutes form the City of Adelaide Business Centre.
Close to Historic Local Pubs, a plethora of gourmet restaurants, quaint historic villages surround with modern Boutiques to satisfy the discerning resident. Sports Ovals, clubs and excellent schools abound with choices.
Much of the terrain in Bridgewater is undulating so probably not a plus for seniors however this very terrain gives us those most spectacular views. In Bridgewater we truly have that feel of the lush green of Britain or Canada but with the Australian Bush environment and weather.
