Reviews of Caledonian Street, Bexley

"10 minutes from Newtown, get in quick before everyone else realises!"

A great area, focusing on the very beautiful Seaforth Park - from the group doing Tai Chi there every morning to the kids and dads playing soccer most afternoons this is a huge and lovely public space with plenty of room for everyone. The council recently covered the playground, making it even better for the little kids, and you see the old men in there every afternoon, chatting away while their wives presumably are back home making dinner.
The great thing about Bexley, that not enough people have yet worked out, is that if like us you move here from the inner city looking for more space, you haven't really left the joys of Newtown, Dulwich Hill and Marrickville behind you. King Street is about 12 minutes drive from Forest Road and the east side of Bexley, yet you can buy a house (a real house!) down here with plenty of space and a backyard and even a pool and have change leftover from the cost of a cramped and dirty two bedroom terrace in Newtown.
The western side of Bexley is certainly more 'burby', so if that puts you off, stick to the Bay side of Forest Road and give yourself a couple of weekends to look around properly. You'll find loads of lovely soldier's settlement era houses from between the wars, really good coffee and bakeries, parks and beaches and still has corner shops like the inner east and west and is close to the city. And the thing is, other people are going to start finding it too...

Great for

  • Close to Kogarah and Rockdale stations = 25 mins to cbd, still find corner shops
  • Beautiful Seaforth Park, fresh air, something for everyone, room to grow
  • Some spectacular houses, especially Edwardian era and soldiers' settlement cottages

Not great for

  • Occasional plane noise - but who doesn't have that now?
