"Great place to raise kids"

I live closer to Willoughby side of Chatswood which I think is the better side. Leafy, quiet, surrounded by parks but walking distance to shops. Lots of childcare options & great public transport access & choices & public schools.

Around the station is crowded & I personally wouldn't live that side.

Local library has plenty of programs for babies to kids. They stock kids books in Tamil, Arabic, Korean, Japanese and Chinese.

Love the night markets & authentic Asian eateries.

Looking for a home in Chatswood?

"Great for shopping but, in general, wouldn't want to live there"

I lived in Chatswood for over a year and have lived in a nearby suburb for nearly 21 years. The place I had in Chatswood was great, west of Pacific Highway in the more suburban part of Chatswood. However, I wouldn't want to live in the main, high-rise part of Chatswood: far too congested, with blocks upon blocks of high rise apartment buildings. I guess if that hum-drum, no isolation sort of life is for you then it's okay but it doesn't appeal to me.

"Overcrowded, overpriced, congested. Better suburbs in Sydney for much less."

I lived in Chatswood for almost 30 years (and have recently left). There have been huge changes in both density and demographics in that time. While there are a lot more shops (which is good) the building of high rises everywhere means traffic is now unbearable. It takes me sometimes 50 minutes to drive from Chatswood to Lane Cove, it's that bad. And the standard of driving, well you really have to see it to believe it - despite the multitude of Mercs and BMW's these days. No wonder so many pedestrians get knocked over here.
Give it a miss. Unless you like crowds and pigeon crud everywhere.

"Dirty and overpriced"

The area has a pigeon infestation, food is for the most part mediocre and rent is very expensive. The only upside is shopping.

Westfield, Chatswood Chase, Mandarin Centre and the one above the Chatswood train station… there are actually four shopping malls in Chatswood, plus two Coles, two JB Hi-Fi, two cinemas, two Aldi etc.

Rentals in Chatswood

"Vibrant atmosphere coupled with tranquil living"

Rich in cuisine, shopping options, transport and what not, Chatswood is a very vibrant place on the North Shore just a stone's throw away from the major employment centres of Macquarie Park and the actual heart of the CBD. The northern beaches are readily accessible for residents, and in the actual suburb itself, there is a great deal to offer. When a suburb is stated as destined to become the next Chatswood, that is not ostensibly a bad thing; in fact, it can have very positive and beneficial implications. For instance, Hurstville's presence as a strategic centre has allowed residents to liken it to the Chatswood of the South suburbs. So as you can discern, Chatswood has a bustling atmosphere, with excellent transport services, a good range of education facilities and all you could wish for. The only downside is the traffic congestion.

"Great place to go shopping and very diverse cuisine available here"

Chatswood in recent years has developed into a large CBD of the north shore. West side with all the offices and the right side with full commercial. To large malls (Westfield and Chase) in one suburb proves the prosperity and developed the area is.

Even though the area is highly concentrated with Chinese/Korean background people, they are very welcoming for all people. The restaurant choices literally include everything. You can easily spend you're entire day here.

In terms of living here I would say it's great for a person who likes to be surrounded by people also if you like to buy groceries daily. Very convenient for buying things. But for people who enjoy quiet areas or with less people it might not be the best. The housing prices are quite high especially the apartment units surrounding the station. I assume it's due to the large amount of foreign investors purchasing property.

Sydney metro also connects to Chatswood which even increases more human flow. Train ride is just 25min away from the Sydney CBD. Also many bus connections available here to Kingsford, Bondi Junct, Manly, Mosman, Sydney Northwest etc.

"Incredible restaurants, a multitude of transport options & 3 major shopping centres that bring in customers from all over"

With 21,000 residents, Chatswood is now considered Sydney’s fourth-largest commercial centres and boasts one of the fastest moving residential property markets in the country. The demand for all properties in the area is intense and rightly so given the array of lifestyle options available. Boasting more than 20 hectares of retail shopping along with a vibrant social scene, Chatswood is a suburb you will absolutely love to live in.

Renowned for its diverse cultural identity with more than a third of residents claiming Chinese or Korean ancestry, benefits greatly from all of its international influences. From trendy fashion boutiques through to high-end jewellers, Chatswood offers something for everyone and the newly constructed concourse has fast become the areas cultural hub.

"Loud, dirty, over priced discusting suburb"

If you like dirty, expensive and overcrowded places filled with rude people, this is the place for you. Literally the most horrible suburb I've lived in. If you're a family newly arriving in Australia, look elsewhere. This place is not as advertised and local schools aren't what they used to be. 35 kids in a class and piled up on the asphalt during recess. Avoid!!!!

I'm sure you are biased against some groups of people here. You need to go out of your own little world to see what's Asian countries are like. They are the most harmless good hearted ppl out there, they don't pretend to be polite and selfish inside like some ppl.

vk1

Since when is giving a review about a place against a "group of people"? As expat, the review we made is to help other families avoid landing in a bad place. I don't understand how you can be so sure that it's about "asian" people? Perhaps you're projecting. Furthermore, your point about visiting asia and the world is irrelevant, as this is a comment about Chatswood, period. You may not like the comment, buts my own experience. PS I'm Asian and lived in multiple continents. So much for "going out of your little world". Clearly, you're the one attacking others with your statement "they don't pretend to be polite and selfish inside like some ppl.".

AlexB4

Ainee, I see your comment as bullying and trying to intimidate people so they don't comment their personal truth about a suburb. I've dealt with a good number of real estate agents in the area that were working in bad faith, falsely representing the area and literally trying to extort you for money. And no, i'm not talking about just a specific group of people. Are you a real-estate agent trying to wrongly represent the area? And by the way, I've worked and traveled in many countries, including Asia and South-East Asia for your information. All of your presumptions were wrong, and your statement pretty shameful.

"More to Chatswood than meets the eye"

Chatswood is in effect a double-barrelled name, in honour of Chat (Charlotte) Hartnett, the wife of district pioneer and former Mayor of Willoughby, Richard Hartnett, and the original wooded nature of the area.

Chatswood is located approximately 9 kms from the Sydney CBD and continues to be a very popular residential area as well as an expanding commercial hub, producing a consistently growing population of 13,513 (according to the 2006 census). Spread over 2.9 km sq the Chatswood CBD is one of the North Shores major commercial and retail districts. In the suburb of Chatswood, you will find everything from studio apartments to stately homes, all within a short distance of shopping amenities, parks, a golf course, schools, child care centres and a major regional transport hub. Significant bushland areas are located along the Lane Cove River and the foreshore of Middle Harbour.

The Concourse was completed in 2011, and contains the Chatswood library as well as a 1,000 seat concert hall, a 500 seat theatre and a multi-purpose hall. There is a public art space, a rehearsal studio for the performing arts, and a mix of retail, cafe and commercial tenants, serviced by over 400 car spaces. The main building resides among a landscaped open space for the public to enjoy, including a huge outdoor television/screen. Recent performances at the Concourse have included the English Ballet & X factor, as well as a wide range of other live shows.

"It's the CBD of the Lower North Shore - everything you need is at your fingertips!"

Chatswood gives you endless possibilities in terms of entertainment, lifestyle, education and convenience. With a world class transport system, including a major train station and Sydney Buses, it allows for easy access to every amenity you could need and is a well-located business hub. With both the Westfield and Chatswood Chase shopping centres, shopping and entertainment options are never hard to find! What I love most about Chatswood though is the community. The people you find working and living in Chatswood are some of the friendliest in the world, which is really what makes this suburb a great choice for your next property purchase.

"Great little organic market on Saturdays"

Having been a devotee of shopping at Chatswood for over 20 years and watching it grow and expand, it was a lovely surprise to be an "accidental tourist" and stumble across a little organic market held in Chatswood Public School on Saturdays. For once I decided NOT to race from point to point and though I would grab a coffee, have a chat with the stallholder there (who is seriously nice) and talked about the difference between organic and other fruit & veg. It was a decision I have never regretted. Sure it may be a tad more expensive, but it is chemical and pesticide free produce and it lasted me for at least 2 weeks. You can definitely taste the difference and since finding this little Saturday "nook", I try to get back there as often as possible if nothing else than to take time out of an otherwise frantic world.

Thoroughly recommend it, don't be put off by the size cause it just means you don't have to compete with everyone for the same things.

"Bit of a dogs breakfast"

I lived in Chatswood for 12 months and wouldn't choose to live there again mainly because of the congestion. It can take 45 just to pick up a pizza if you drive on the weekend.
Housing is very over priced.
Public transport is good and I nearly always felt safe.
It may help to speak Mandarin which suited me as I love Asian culture but it grated on my wife occasionally.
Shopping is good although the Chase is a bit of a white elephant.

"A great place to live"

Have lived in UK, Hong Kong for 15 years and Chatswood. Chatswood is a great cosmopolitan place. It has apartments around the pacific highway and railway station, and a surprisingly big range of houses in quiet and leafy streets off the Victoria avenue area. Some of the houses are very very good (modernised federation and Californian styles from the early 1900's) and and there are still some (relatively) lower priced smaller houses around. Artamon, Roseville and chatswood west are other options that seemed (when we were looking) to have more houses which were close by but a little cheaper (can be v. Hilly) but you will likely miss out on a large part of the convenience of being in close walkinging distance (mostly an easy level walk) shops and transport. It has a relaxed and comfortable feeling, but with a wide range of good shopping and restraunts including a range that are open late in the evening (try out the evening buffet at bulgogi in Victoria ave near the station). There a good schools and very short short train rides to the city and north Sydney. Driving a short distance on good road links gets you into the city and beaches. Everyone is different, but having come from living in relatively busy cities, don't underestimate the felling of areas being dead / isolation or the bad (on occasion horrendous) traffic if you live further out. It's a great mix of residential environment and city living. Hope this review helps.

"Chic Area"

Willoughby North or North Willoughby, is lovely Quite leafy area, with good Transport, to the city and Chatswood, and Bondi. The city is only 4 traffic lights away from the city which take around 15 to 20 min. Near Willoughby Park and great mix of Schools and Child Care. Medical Faclities are very good. Great Cafe's and places to eat with a great mix of foods... The Beaches are 20mins away. Also near middel harbour bush walks. Great shopping High street markets is a short walk from anywhere in North Willoughby, Chatswood is 5 mins away by car or take a bus or walk under 25mins... But with out all the noise and traffic. The houseing is mixed with old and modern, the people are also mixed, from young, mid and old families etc. With Houses starting from 1 million + to millions the area is starting to be chic and Exclusive.. This is also why there is not many houses on the market in the area... The area is friendly and easy going but Private and very safe. But the main thing is North Willou

"Living in the Chatswood retail area."

It is the retail/commercial center for the mid northshore area. I lived there for 9 months in a unit behind the Westfield carpark. If you live near the retail area it can be quite noisy. They were building the Chatswood rail upgrade when I was there, very noisy. If there is no major building going on you still have the traffic and early morning council cleaning/rubbish truck noise. On the plus side is the walking distance convienence of public transport, a lot of banks, insurance offices, doctors, dentists, a fair number of government department offices and a good selection of shops and restaurants. A reasonably safe area, but like all places where there are a lot of people coming and going, you need to be careful.

"A great neighbourhood for shopping!"

Chatswood is located in the northern suburbs of Sydney. It is about a twenty minutes drive from the city to Chatswood. This suburb is connected by both trains and buses and there is almost no need for a car here. However, if you do commute by car to work or to get into Chatswood, do allow yourself plenty of time to get to your destination, as traffic along the Pacific Highway is notorious during peak hours.

There are many fantastic places to shop at in Chatswood. There is Chatswood Chase, Westfield and many independent shops in and around Chatswood. Dining in Chatswood is as exciting as shopping there. There are plenty of resturants, cafes and takeaway shops to choose from.

As city-like as Chatswood sounds, there are plenty of residential houses and units in this area. However, real estate tends to be expensive at this end of town.

i have just moved to chatswood after living in the innerwest Lewisham and love chatswood because of the facilities here and the shopping centre. I live in Thomas street close to the train and buses and woolies, coles, westfield and chase, libraries, office work and nsw and westpac bank. When I was living in Lewisham I had to walk 30mins or catch the train to ashfield for my supermarket and bank shopping. I donot have a car so walk everywhere. today there was no trains to the cbd instead free replacement bus only taken 15-20mins express to winyard train station. My brother came to chatswood 30 years ago and said it was a good place to be and today I am reinventing the wheel by living in chatswood and love the range of asian eateries. This is the first time living close to a centre shopping centre where there is little noise from planes flying over the apartment and our new apartment has lots of light compared to our old apartment in Lewisham and have views of mainly from our lounge. I had transferred from another meriton apartment and love their apartments because of the locality and facilities provided by meriton.
