Chiswick, NSW 2046

The small suburb between Abbotsford & Drummoyne is surrounded on three sides by water of the Parramatta River and Abbotsford and Five Dock bays. Originally it was part of Five Dock Farm, but in the 1850s a Dr Fortescue owned an estate in the area, which he had called after a village west of London on the River Thames.

Chiswick takes its name from this property. At that time many fine homes were built, and the suburb took on the elegance of the Victorian era.

Some of the streets recall people associated with early Chiswick. Fortescue Street immortalised the doctor himself and Chiswick Street, his estate; Bortfield Drive honours Fred Bortfield, who was an alderman of the Drummoyne Council for eighteen years. Bortfield, a Drummoyne newsagent, served in both world wars as a sniper in Scots Guards in the First World War. He was awarded the Albert Cross, a Belgian decoration, for gallantry. He did not actually receive this award until sixty years after the action that merited it. In the Second World War he served as an officer in the RAAF.

The suburb still retains a delightful air of old world charm, even in an age of rush and bustle.

A fantastic little suburb hidden between Abbotsford and Drummoyne. Public transport options at your door with the ferry and bus services. Shopping options abound with Wareembas boutique cafe strip, the busier Drummoyne and Five Dock shopping/Retail precincts and Birkenhead Point Shopping Centre all very accessible.

Waterfront parklands provide plenty of activity and exercise options with a strong community feel to the area.

Chiswick is only a short drive from the city and a very pleasant ferry ride from anywhere in Sydney with its own ferry wharf. There are great schools, cafes & restaurants all close by

"Where is Chiswick?" many friends and colleagues say to me. "It's one of Sydney's best kept secrets!" is my response.

Located on the superb Sydney Harbour foreshore just past where Sydney Harbour meets Parramatta River, Chiswick is surrounded by beautiful manicured parklands, playgrounds, clean streets and generally pleasant people. Whilst it is raining in other surrounding suburbs, it always seems to shine here.

Transport is brilliant with the Sydney RiverCat and Bus services only minutes from my door. There is no better way to get to town than by a chauffeured ride on the waterways.

The only thing missing are a couple of good cafe's. Chiswick Point's Pizzeria and Seafood Takeaway restaurants are brilliant though a few more restaurants would be better. Thankfully Abbotsford and Wareemba are located only minutes away providing fabulous cafe and dining experiences plus general shopping with IGA and a few speciality stores.

Now six years strong and no thoughts of moving too far.

Chiswick was a mixed use suburb for most of its life. In the late 1960s, the box factory complex was converted to the Bortfield Drive apartment complex. In the late 1990s, the BHP wire mill (Lysaghts) was converted to a high spec apartment complex with pools, tennis court etc. The houses in the area are on good size blocks and some premium streets offer water, city, North Sydney and Gladesville bridge views. The suburb is serviced by the Rivercat and three bus routes (two to the CBD and one to Burwood). There is an interesting mix of people living in the suburb: older caucasion and Italian speakers (many residents have lived in the suburb for decades) and increasingly young families and singles taking advantage of the new apartment accommodation options. There is quite of bit of house renovation taking place which is modernising the look of the homes in the suburb.
