Which suburbs near Clayton campus of Monash Uni are cheap, safe and accessible?

I am an international student, enrolled in University of Melbourne's Master's program. My wife has been enrolled in Monash Uni PhD prog in their clayton campus. We are thinking to hire a one bed studio apartment/two bed flat etc near Monash University Clayton campus. Your valuable advice is required on following areas..Which suburbs near clayton campus of Monash Uni are cheap, safe accessible etc. My budget is around $1000 p/month? Some one suggested me about danenong area. Any other viable option?

At $1,000 per week you near Monash you are really limited to areas like Dandenong, Knox, Hampton Park, Noble Park. Although doing a search on realestate.com.au did bring back some options in Malvern East which is a nicer suburb.Clayton is popular due to Chadstone and obviously Monash.

You're on Homely not the other one, Melbournefan haha! But I agree, Malvern East is great and it's a huge area so you're bound to find something in the budget. Also Hughesdale, Chadstone area and even Murumbeena. All great areas.
