"Changing fast"

Cunningham Street is in the southern part of code 3070, three streets from Clifton Hill to the south and close to Merri Creek. It was part of the area first gazetted by William Westgarth. For the last 100+ years it had a range of single-fronted and double-fronted homes, and large plane trees give a leafy feel. The road is divided by High Street and the railway, so there are really three sections that do not have much to do with one another. Each section has no through traffic.
In the middle part of the century the area became favoured by in-movers from S.Europe, particularly Greece, Italy and Macedonia. Many of these residents still live here but in the last 15 years there has been an enormous factory conversion on High Street (into modern apartments for those seeking inner city living with good transport), a redevelopment of the old people's home at the eastern end into more flats, and there are planning applications for other 'densification' of the housing stock. With a run down timber 3 bed house going for over $1m in 2009, houses have risen in value x3 in 7-8 years - one heritage property was recently sold for over $2m.
This is truly a 'gentrifying' area. With shops and cinema and bars and coffee just up the road at Westgarth, buses/tram/2 train lines, this is a marvellous place to live - if you have $700,500+ for a house and don't need shops with fresh veg and a butcher (you have to travel 1km for those)! Best public transport in Melbourne - 2 train lines, tram 96, many buses, taxi rank all a short walk. City 15-20 mins.
Interesting mix of old and new residents, but changing very fast.
