Dorcas St, South Melbourne, VIC 3205

Dorcas Street's heart is in South Melbourne but the street runs from St Kilda Road right down to Port Melbourne near the beach. It's a wide, leafy street with a variety of residential and commercial buildings on it, mostly upmarket and in the creative and production industries.

The South Melbourne market and accompanying cafes and emporium styles shops are on the parallel street and are the main benefit to living in this area. Clarendon Street is more for utilities and doesn't hold much atmosphere.

There are trams on Clarendon Street and the light rail/tram on Ferrars Street that heads to St Kilda or back towards the city.

The slightly hidden gem is the local pub on Ferrars Street (on a weeknight) called The Rails. Great music, good relaxed vibes and tasty ales on tap.

We had a couple of bikes stolen from inside our fenced area and a few instances of smashed car windows at the time we lived there (2004-2006). Nothing serious and never any unprovoked violence.

There seems to have been quite a bit of medium density residential development happening in the last couple of years which may have made the street more crowded but perhaps the community more full and varied.

It's a beautiful area to live, if for nothing else than the South Melbourne Market.
