"Fakenham where we call home"

Best street in the suburb and area, the location is perfect. It’s hardly to find one like this in eastern Melbourne.

"Demographic change in action"

We have lived in Fakenham Road for 15 years. We bought in Ashburton because it was the best suburb we could afford at the time. At the time it was often marketed as 'adjacent' Glen Iris.
Fakenham Road developed in stages. Close to the station are houses built prior to WW2. The further you go towards Warrigal road, the newer the houses become. Constuction was probably completed by about 1960.
When we arrived, most of the people were the original occupiers of the houses. In the last 15 years we have seen most of these people move on, to be replaced by younger couples, some with children.
As the new generation of occupiers arrived, rennovations have occurred. Most houses now seem to have an extension with additional living space, bedrooms and bathrooms.
Fakenham Road is in the Boroondara Council area. We receive pretty good service from the council. Surprisingly the council rates are reasonable.
We are excellently serviced by public transport with the Ashburton station at the end of the street. There are also bus services running along High Street and Warrigal Road.
The local High Street shopping area in Ashburton is excellent, with quality butchers, greengrocers, delis, cafes banks and chemists, to name a few.
Chadstone shopping centre is only a short 5-10 minute drive away.
We are close to City-link, so trips to the city and beyond are easy.
Fakenham Road contains Ashburton Park and oval. A grass cricket pitch is maintained here in summer. In winter the ground hosts soccer matches.
Traffic is for the most part pretty good. However it does get quite busy with 'rat runners' during peak times from 7:30am to 9:00am and from 5:00pm to 6:30. as drivers try to avoid the congestion on Warrigal Road and High Street.
On the whole, it is a great street.
