Apart from the occasional loud siren Heidelberg is ideal. There's a smaller shopping area if you just need groceries or want a quick shop, with Northland and Doncaster shopping centres not far away. Plenty of great resturants along the main road and of course easy access to the hospital which is right next to the train station.

We first moved here as young couple buying an apartment on Burgundy street and fell in love with the place. Now 10 years later we live down along the Yarra trail area off Beverly road and absolutely love it. The parkland is incredible and has been a lifesaver during lockdowns for us our two young children (6 & 3). Close walk to burgundy st and Rosanna village, lots of great food and coffee options plus every grocery option you need - the new Woolworths in Heidelberg is excellent. Great schools in the area. Lots of old homes being renovated and lovely well maintained streetscapes. Houses don’t seem to come up that often and the prices are increasing every year. There are more apartments being built in and around the main Burgundy st shopping precinct which is brining in lots of new businesses which is good too. Two local pubs building outdoor options now, all we need is a wine or cocktail bar and we’re set.

Heidelberg is located just 12km north-east of the city and is pocketed in between Eaglemont and Rosanna. The suburb is an incredibly safe and friendly area that has a good mixture of young independents as well as young families and older couples.

Heidelberg is surrounded with some of the best parklands in the outer Melbourne suburbs including Warringal park, the Yarra River and sizable football and cricket ovals where you won’t struggle to find some great running / cycling tracks.

The local shopping strip is thriving with restaurants and small shops that has everything you need including chemists, groceries, clothing stores, and supermarkets. If that’s not enough, you can find Westfield Doncaster just a few minutes’ drive away.

The suburb is well connected and has a combination of period homes and modern apartments that spread across a hilly landscape. The area has several established schools and childcare facilities including Heidelberg Primary School, St Johns Primary School, Our Lady of Mercy College and many more. The area is well serviced by Zone 1 public transport as well as train and smart bus transportation.
With its exceptional location, immense amount of parkland on your doorstep and a buzzing commercial precinct, Heidelberg is a great suburb to explore.

I've lived in Heidelberg almost 3 years now and am very happy with my decision to move here. It's the perfect distance between the city (where I work) and the outer suburbs like Greensborough and Eltham (where my kids go to school) and all trains stop here.

Burgundy Street is one of Melbourne's more famous strips of shops and has everything you need from restaurants and cafes to chemists to clothing stores to many food stores and even multiple supermarkets. If you need a large shopping center then Doncaster and Northland are just a few minutes away.

Of course we've got the Austin Hospital and a bunch of others at the top of the hill so there's no worry about getting medical help.

Lastly I'd like to point out the absolutely beautiful parklands that surround the Yarra starting at the bottom end of Burgundy Street. I often go for runs through the various parks that were made famous by the Heidelberg School of Art.

Heidelberg is a great suburb ordering other nice areas like Eaglemont, Ivanhoe, Rosanna and Bulleen. It has a major hospital, great transport, parks/yarra trail and good cafes and restaurants in Burgundy Street.

Heidelberg is a nice, hilly and green upper-middle income suburb. In many ways it feels like an eastern suburb, but is in the northern suburbs- It used to mean that despite feeling affluent, Heidelberg was cheap- but nowadays it is the same price as the eastern suburbs, so I would only recommend parting with the huge sum necessary to own here if being in the northern suburbs specifically is what you wanted/needed. Centre of the suburb is Burgundy St which along with Warringal Mall have most of the shops and services that you could need, plus plenty of eateries and cafe's around, with the bonus that the commercial area sits directly adjacent to a premium train station in zone 1, about 25 mins to the city. The locals are agreeable if not overly friendly, behave and dress conservatively, and fit in slightly above the average on the social scale. You receive slightly fewer greetings but also see less unusual/anti social behaviour than in more blue collar areas. I disagree that it is not expensive or 'hipster' yet- hipsters don't make an area expensive, affluent singles and families make an area expensive, hipsters are mostly poor students and hospitality casuals who can go out on $20. As Heidelberg is now mostly affluent singles and affluent families it is anything but cheap. Frankly, I'd love if hipsters did move in, as then there would be a bit of nightlife in the area beyond the two suburban pubs (mainly tradies and pokies). Its about 15 minute drive to 3 major shopping centres from Heidelberg, all of which have cinemas: Northland, Greensborough, and Doncaster. Traffic in Heidelberg can be pretty bad unfortunately; Lower Heidelberg Rd and Banksia St are often choked up, even on weekends. The Yarra River runs along the side of Heidelberg, meaning lots of parks and some great jogging/cycling trails.

Take a moment and have a look at the highlights that Heidelberg has to offer and you will be hard pressed to finds another suburb with so much to offer.
One of the largest Medical precincts in Victoria which include Austin/Mercy Hospital and Warringal Private Hospital.Some of the best parklands in outer Melbourne with Warringal park,Yarra River and also a host of football/cricket ovals all in one place. Burgundy Street offers a range of cafes and restaurants along with the iconic Leo's Supermarket.There are a several established churches, a variety of schools and childcare.Zone 1 transport and also Smart Bus transport.Shopping is also covered with Warringal Mall and Heidelberg is in the middle of two shopping centers being Northland and Westfield in Doncaster so take your pick.If you need a cold one and a meal you can also choose between the Old England Hotel or Barclays, if not there are 3 gyms in Burgundy Street that will help you get fit.

Keep an eye on this area as my fellow hipsters start to catch on (they're only a suburb or two away).

A quiet little part of Melbourne that is close to everything. Has great medical facilities as well as great options for private schools; close to the city (25 minutes on the train) but far out enough to get some peace and quiet. Plenty of parks and bike/walking trails along the river; an enjoyable area to live in.

Watch Heidelberg over the next few years, leafy, green clean area, safe, quite, zone one, some of the best schools in Melbourne, no weekly influx of tourists (bogans) ruining the peaceful lifestyle like the beach side suburbs and two premium shopping centers within ten minutes.

Lovely suburb. It has everything. Great community. Handy having the Austin hospital, safeway, leos and a lot of cafes, newsagent, Old England, Barklys. Everything. Amazing Shopping Options. Pretty Place. Friendly and safe.

800 meters to Zone 1 Station, 750 meters to Burgundy Street Shopping (Coles, Safeway, Aldi & Leos + Cafes), 5 minute drive to Retail Shopping in Northland. Of the houses on Cleve Grove, it is 65% Baby Boomer/Retiree Age, 10% Professional Couples and 25% Young Family's. We are a young family (2 year old and one on the way) and the neighbours are excellent - friendly, accommodating and they do things like take the rubbish out and clear the letterbox whilst you are on holidays. We have an annual Christmas Party on the street too. The median price of Heidelberg has gone into orbit the past 5 years, blocking the first home buyer from entry, however for a young family already established inner city wanting to graduate to a 750+ meter block with decent schooling and prospects for growth, it is worth a serious look. There are still many (70%) properties on the hill which are untouched from a renovation perspective. Those that have been updated, are commanding significant money and skewing the average for the suburb. It is only a matter of time before the other houses are updated and it follows the course of Ivanhoe & Eaglemont.
