"A place where you can be whomever you want to be and be accepted - however there is no room for pomposity"

We've been Island residents for over 10years and moved here with very little but a bub to be and enough money to buy a quaint home with water views on 2427sqm of land. T'was very very cheap back then, we paid about $85k. That property was on Perulpa Island. We were warned by many locals at the time..what ever you do, don't buy on Perulpa Island (a very private, small island attached to the south eastern side of Macleay and accessible via a causeway). As legend had it there were enough mosquitoes on Perulpa island to pick you up and carry you away. We quickly learned of the power of Island Whispers. Our five years on Perulpa Island was a wonderful experience - although battling the mosquitoe myth wasn't. A few years later we purchased a beautiful waterfront block of land on Perulpa. Obviously we had a fond affection for our little community and all those special qualities that Perulpa had to offer. We felt extremely safe and well cared for by all of the neighbours. It was a live and let live kind of a way there. Eventually we sold our first property, taking advantage of one of the many peaks in the Real Estate market and made an excellent profit. We couldn't help ourselves and bought another beautiful cottage surrounded by conservation in Karrawarra Street on Macleay. Again, wonderful neighbours, peaceful and handy to the amenities and one of the best swimming spots on the island. The market peaked again and we decided to launch that property and move from the western side of the island to what we considered to be a smarter option when it came to Real Estate. We sold the vacant waterfront land on Perulpa and purchased an established home on the water, back on the eastern side. Now here we are four years down the track in Marine Street. We have three kids, 14, 10, 2.5 and a fourth on the way. The neighbourhood is terrific, we've got our share senior citizens (the Golden Oldies) and a mixed bag of young families with interesting backgrounds. We all know one another and manage to be respectful of these key factors, privacy, space and differences of opinion. But, that's really not unlike any other street we have lived in on the island. I would have to say that one of the most endearing qualities about island life is that the kids grow up living a fresh, free spirited friendly lifestyle. That is why we moved here in the first place. Just a good old fashioned whistle will bring the kids home for a meal, but generally half the neighbourhood kids are at our place doing their thing. BBQ's and Camp ovens are great for building community bonds. It's terrific for the kids. You can always tell the new kid on the block..they are reserved and generally reluctant to even say G'day. We eventually wear them down with our smiley ways. During our experience here we have witnessed an amazing level of community spirit...something I have never had the pleasure of being involved in elsewhere. I could provide you with scores of stories of human kindness that would bring a tear to your eye. However it hasn't always been a bed of roses. Us islanders have had our tough times, but we've always managed to come out the otherside bigger and better people for it. There have been some real ratbags settle themselves here for a while and the heavy influence of the community has urged them to move on. These days we enjoy a the (well most of us do) a well established Police presence. They do their best for us. No matter where you are in the world today we are met with contraints and ongoing challenges...and I have to say that Macleay Island would be one of the best places to ride this ugly global wave.
Summary...top place for kids, great place to meet real people and if you come here thinking you are better than everyone else you'll either change your ways or change your address. Give it a go, we thoroughly recommend it!!
  • North south facing (great breezes)
  • great neighbours
  • very little traffic yet only a few minutes drive to the jetty
  • perhaps the road could be sealed (some prefer not to be)
