Reviews of Marrickville, NSW

"Overrated"

I've lived in Marrickville for over three decades. While there have been changes over the years and gentrification has occurred, it is overrated. For the past 10 years, I can't think of one restaurant that I frequent. It's more or less a poor man's Newtown. The cultural melting pot could be far from the truth. That is If you consider people sitting on crates impeding footpaths and turning it into a third world standard. Vietnamese eateries dominate the suburb, along with pork roll shops. Pho eateries lining up an entire road gets boring real fast. The lack of cultural diversity is evident when taking a stroll down Marrickville and Illawarra roads. The foothpaths look like they haven’t been washed in several years. The only positive is that it takes me about 20 minutes to get to work.

"So much better than it used to be!"

People who've lived in Sydney for more than a couple of decades obviously still see Marrickville with stigma. But the suburb has changed so much and is continuing to change. There are plenty of houses which are large for an inner city post-industrial suburb, on nice leafy streets, and these are being improved by the young professionals and families moving into the area. The food and pub offering has only gotten better over the last few years. There is an appropriate amount of grungy graffiti and

"Location, Public Transport and Safe"

Lived here for a year and love it. Everything you need is close by - food, library, shopping, parks, river, local doctors and access to the city all within walking distance and bars, pubs and nightlife far enough so noise is not a problem. While some parts feel a little rough around the edges and filled with street art/graffiti, it is interesting, authentic, unpretentious and there’s enough cool independent businesses that make it an awesome place to live.

"Favourite inner west suburb"

We bought a house in Marrickville 3 years ago after living overseas for 10 years. Previously lived in lower North Shore, East Sydney and the Hills area.
We were specific about this area, because it's what we wanted to surround ourselves with...more specifically an eclectic, open, vibrant vibe without the pretentiousness that come with other places close to the harbour and CBD, more land than places like Newtown and Erskinville.

It's the Williamsburg of NYC and the East of London. I feel like most bad reviews written here are from people who are "not Marrickville" and that's ok - it's not for everyone. But their views shouldn't overshadow the fact that this suburb gives off a completely different feel to anywhere else in Sydney, and it does it well. It's definitely not a pretty suburb, and it's not trying to be. Instead it's unapologetically grungy, eclectic, friendly, casual and accepting of different walks of life. It's a suburb with everything you can possibly need yet feels like a small village with closeknit neighbours and communities.

It also helps that it has a plethora of public transport options to the city, dog and child friendly breweries for summer, parks along the Cooks river and the walk has been a saviour during lockdown. Each suburb has it's own vibe. It's shouldn't be dissed just because it doesn't pass your vibe check, because it's an awesome place to live in.

Rentals in Marrickville

"Ideal active Saturday morning in Marrickville"

The ideal active Saturday morning in Marrickville. Park the car at Steel Park, head down to the Cooks river walk, head east along the river toward Bayview Av. Head over the bridge into Gough Whitlam Park. Let the kids and/or dogs run wild. Playground and public toilets available. Head west along the river path until you reach Illawarra Rd. Head north across the bridge back to Steel Park. Coffee and food lovers, treat yourself to something at Warren & Holt, or try any of the local Vietnamese restaurants, short drive up Illawarra Rd. Lovers of real estate, check out Wharf St, Beauchamp St, and Livingstone Rd South of Hill St, great little pocket. "Jamie Zimmermann - Sales Agent Marrickville - Zimmermann Agency"

"Grievous aircraft noise"

If you are to purchase an abode in Marrickville, please aim for somewhere in proximity to Tempe or Undercliffe; it has a decent array of amenities and quality local schools. Don't opt for anywhere else, as the aircraft noise is overly horrendous. Marrickville is infested with restaurants and shopping districts that can easily frighten the introvert-dominated population (in neighbouring suburbs) out of their living wits.

"Hipsters have screwed it up"

We lived in Marrickville for about 12 years until 2016.Hipsters and flood of developments have pretty much screwed what was an unfashionable and comfortable suburb. Now it sucks with its boutique beer places, pickling parlours and stratospherically priced artisan cafes. Perhaps, like Potts Point once was, it is now an ok first and temporary landing spot for people arriving in NSW.

This is very accurate.

Sounds like this suburb has turned a lot more liveable and desirable. Not sure how all those nice places opening would make it suck

"Area near Cook River"

I lived near Cook River near Illawara road. This area is very clean, has minimal airplane n
oise and there are beautiful refreshing parks near the river. You can walk to Woollies and the train station. Illawara Rd has a bus every 20 minutes or so that connects to the Marrickville and Newton train stations and goes all the way to Martin Place. The main disadvantage were the locals who've been there a long time are not friendly so I didn't feel any community spirit. But the peace and quiet made up for the cons.

Very industrial in certain pockets, brothels everywhere and dirty, and the noise from the flight path is killing me. It is not a place to live or raise a family.

"The King of Gentrification"

Well-knit community, dynamic shopping and dining options and a love for parks, aquatic centre and community hubs, Marrickville is so family friendly and every week I find myself inside a new cafe, restaurant or bar. It's a suburb of tradition, yet aspiring, innovative and creative for the young and middle-aged!

What's more to offer in the future?
Marrickville will have a world-class metro railway system (Sydney Metro) with a train at least every 4 minutes in peak hours, taking you into Sydney CBD in less than 10 minutes. Marrickville will also be home to a state-of-the-art library hub (designed through competition). Marrickville will also benefit from nearby Sydenham Creative Hub (a masterplanned area for the best of Sydney's live entertainment precinct).

"A smart choice when moving to the big city."

I believe Marrickville is an ideal place to live thanks to its excellent lifestyle amenities and amazing cultural diversity. There has been a recent increase in new cafes, wine bars and specialty stores that has given the area a hip, eclectic feel. Marrickville also boasts close proximity to the CBD and excellent transportation links to and from the city, meaning a trip into the hustle and bustle is never too difficult. There are plenty of parks and green space and walking the excellent pathways along the Cooks River makes you really how appreciate how wonderful this pocket of Sydney is.

"Friendly, great coffee, moving up!"

A fantastic place to live - I've lived here for a 3 year period 6 years ago and am currently back here again. It's the perfect balance for me of peace but with all urban amenities. I've seen some negative reviews but these people probably live on or close to the main streets. Marrickville Road, Illawarra Road and the Marrickville train line are things to watch out for, you don't want to be too close especially to the train line as you get goods trains on it. But loads of quiet leafy streets with houses suitable for young families, a lot of old folk and lots of parks and playgrounds. On weekdays you see the original residents, all the old Greek men and women, Vietnamese families, and on weekends the new wave of trendy urbanites out in the great cafes popping up everywhere. Fantastic transport options, excellent food and cheap groceries thanks to the multiple independent butchers, fishmongers and greengrocers.

I'm a young professional with a baby and I don't have to drive to work, there's a great mothers network and early childhood centre, parks and playgrounds, good doctors, sidewalks are pram friendly and I have never felt threatened. After having lived all over the Eastern suburbs, when I moved to Marrickville I was struck by how friendly all the shopkeepers are. With neighbours, well, it depends on where you live. In apartments it's always more anonymous, but moving to a house soon fingers crossed! But as an example the people at my local pho place know my name, chat about their family and babies, the GP's receptionist knows me on sight, and the lovely owner of the Lush Arena women's and kids boutique knows me on sight too! Very close to RPA as well which is a great hospital.

What's not to like? And the skyrocketing real estate market shows the proof is in the pudding.

Marrickville area is filthy, dirty nobody gives a damn about anything but their image and oh 'shopping'...the back lanes are littered with rubbish and dogshit cos' hardly anyone could be bothered picking it up or take their bins in.The attitude is that its someone elses problem.Around the many industrial areas it's littered with commercial/industrial rubbish and buildings are left to rot and fester in their own filth.Trees and shrubs are never trimmed or maintained and look ugly and unkempt.Marrickville council is lazy and are only interested in raking in the rates. In my back lane, which is wall to wall bins and rubbish everywhere, the council made a half arsed attempt to get people to take their bins in by putting stickers on the bins saying you must take in your bin or you'll be fined.People ignored it and the council didn't do anything.Pathetic.

"A dump"

We rented in Marrickville for a year. It was filthy and noisy and we couldn't wait to escape. The streets are dirty. Our neighbours weren't very friendly and we didn't feel it was a safe suburb. The house was expensive to rent but no match for the constant plane noise and deafening train noise from the goods line that runs 24/7. I didn't sleep right through the night more than a couple of times in a year. This suburb is grossly overpriced and hugely overrated.

"A suburban feel with an urban aspect"

Marrickville has just about everything you need in close vicinity. A short trip on the train gets you to the Sydney CBD in 15-20 minutes. Bus services are also reasonable. Livingstone Road is one of the longest, but one of the best (in my opinion!)

"A thriving community in the heart of Sydney"

Marrickville is a bustling and lively community showcasing multiculturalism at its finest. The area is alive with different nationalities making it, in my opinion, Sydney's most colourful place to live. The range of shops and restaurants is so diverse that you can visit a two dollar shop or discount fashion warehouse while at the same time grabbing a coffee from Gloria Jeans and making your way to the Greek Delicatessen for fresh olives. This is a place where young meet old and professionals meet pensioners. Not to mention the growing morning coffee crowd which gathers for lattes on a Saturday morning.

Neighbourliness is rife too - given that my block of friendly neighbours meets every year for a Christmas party by the pool. We look out for one another and have regular catch ups over drinks and dinner. It's a real community. Marrickville is a fabulous place to live if you want to be close to the action, close to transport and around interesting people. The place is rapidly developing and the young professional crowd are moving in. The cafe culture is most definiately catching on. Now is the time to invest, but you'll need to be quick.

"Nice and convenient suburb"

Marrickville is a bustling suburb with Marrickville road having plenty of shops and restaurants to service all different types of tastes. There is a distinct ethnic flavour to it all with plenty of Vietnamese restaurants and take away shops along with European restaurants to give you options. Marrickville road itself gets rather crowded so it can definitely feel claustrophobic if you are not use to it all but the many cafes and pubs will give you plenty to be curious about in this happening suburb. Groceries are very cheap in this area and eating out will not cost too much for good food.

There are a lot of new residential developments in Marrickville so there are many young professionals renting or living here due to its proximity to the city. There are many buses in the morning and night that link up so commuting is not a problem.
