"Excellent Suburb"

I have been living in Mawson Lakes for nearly 10 years now. Rented for 7 years and now owns a house. Really love this suburb. I see that some people complain about the high crime rate and dirty streets, I think it is exaggerated. Sure there are some issues, but nothing significant. Mawson lakes have a population density of ~ 1700/km2, so a couple of car breaks once in a while is nothing unusual. Yes, the place is a bit crowded these days with several new apartments, but not a big issue. Public transport is excellent and you can survive without a car. Very multicultural society and plenty of shops. Ingle farm shopping centre, Parabanks shopping centre and Hollywood plaza all within 10min drive. Semaphore Beach is just 15min away. Beautiful lakes for an evening walk(two lakes). Mawson Lakes is close to Parafield Airport, so the first couple of months you may notice some noise, but after that, it may not be an issue - they fly tiny air crafts, not jet planes :)

"Paradise for renters"

Mawson Lakes is a vibrant and modern suburb located in the northern region of Adelaide, South Australia. It is a relatively new suburb that was established in the late 1990s, and since then, it has become a popular residential area for both families and young professionals.

One of the most appealing aspects of Mawson Lakes is its convenient location. It is only a 20-minute drive from the Adelaide CBD, and it is well-connected to public transport, with a train station and several bus routes servicing the area. This makes it easy for residents to commute to work or explore the city.

The suburb also boasts a range of amenities and facilities that cater to the needs of its residents. There are several shopping centers, supermarkets, cafes, restaurants, and parks located within the area, providing plenty of opportunities for recreation and entertainment. Additionally, the suburb is home to several schools and educational institutions, making it an ideal location for families with children.

One of the standout features of Mawson Lakes is its beautiful lake, which is located at the heart of the suburb. The lake is surrounded by walking and cycling paths, and it provides a serene and picturesque backdrop for residents to enjoy. There are also several community events and festivals held at the lake throughout the year, creating a strong sense of community spirit in the suburb.

Overall, Mawson Lakes is a highly desirable suburb that offers a great quality of life for its residents. Its convenient location, range of amenities, and beautiful surroundings make it a fantastic place to live, work, and play.

"Sorry, not for me..."

Mawson Lakes is a newly developed area 15-20 mins north of the city. Despite it being close to shops, doctors, schools and other amenities of the like, the area has a high crime rate and many rentals. Just check crime stats for the area, Mawson Lakes has some of the highest rates of car theft in Adelaide if you compare it with pretty much most other suburbs. Every suburb, residents park their cars on the streets so this shouldn't be used as an excuse to dissolve from the issue at hand.

"Village Mode In The Midst Of Urban Mess"

I recently relocated from New York.

Mawson Lakes/Salisbury area reminded me of Howard Beach, Queens in NY. ML is a diverse housing estate for families, young professionals and university students.

Main Street is a go to place for groceries, eateries, and all your health care needs. When you are ready for the urban mess, ML is a short commute away from Salisbury and the city.

ML is a paradise full walking trails- further afield, Cobbler Creek is a fantastic nature reserve.

"Was lovely at the start"

The original part of Mawson Lakes around the lakes (from 20+ years ago) was lovely, and had a west lakes vibe As were some of the back street houses not far from the lake. However, in more recent years, as they have expanded Mawson Lakes, they have permitted shoe box style dwellings which look disgusting in my opinion and box houses. As for people complaining about planes. What must one expect when you move next to the busiest airport in Australia.

"A Democratically Planned Suburb"

Mawson Lakes is a fantastic place to live. It is a suburb with services and industries. It is a well planned place with recreation facilities ; above all, it is also a place designed on democratic values.

Services:
Mawson Lakes got it all- schools, medical hubs, shops and eateries catering to all tastes and budgets. Mawson Lakes is also home to three supermarkets, Aldi, Foodland, and Woolworths.

Industries:
Parafield Airport might be the most divisive parcel of land- but to Mawsovians, the airport draw business into Main Street. Pilots and students comingle in supermarkets, cafes, and university. While small airplane noises might be a source or irritance to some, Parafield Airport is the goose that lays the golden egg.

Democratic values:
Mawson Lakes is home to the rich and the marginalised. Home ownership sits comfortably next to renters. Renters sits comfortably next to state run housing for the marginalised. Irrespective of purse sizes, individuals and families value safety, cleanliness, and the democratic values that this parcel of land is designed for. The lakes encourage outdoor activities, and the transit system provide efficient transportation for the City-Gawler corridor.

Urban Planning

If Nagoya Centrair and Kansai Airport are not sinking anytime soon, you can add Mawson Lakes to the list of technological marvel of the 21st century.

"Good enough to rent"

I have been living there for nearly 5 years in a rental. Rent is affordable but noise from Parafield airport and the freight train is constant. Also, hear domestic disputes frequently and there's a high turnover of residents in the street. Rubbish commonly littered around and good luck getting a street park. Rentals also seem to be cheaply built so we often hear our neighbours conversing through the wall. I wouldn't recommend for a family. As a first rental moving out of home it was great. Oh and we did find a bag of bullet rounds in the veggie patch soon after we moved in, (yes we handed them in)...

"Tidy, Clean, Safe, Friendly"

Moved from Sydney - It is tidy, clean, safe, and friendly here in Mawson Lakes. My wife feels safe walking to the shops with the pram. Renting at present - watching the SA housing market before deciding to buy. With new infrastructure projects here underway, it has been trending upward already - so I think it will rise modestly and be a good investment. Mawson Lakes has a very stable and sustained looking property graph over the long term, which is good to know for investors and owner occupiers alike.

"Overrated suburb, rent but not buy"

Honestly, lets get to the real points. I am sharing experience from living in Mawson lakes. Lived at: Baird St, Mawson Lakes 5095

1. The hard rubbish is collected by City of Salisbury. As you know Mawson lakes is litered by shoe box houses and apartment. There is hard rubbish in every corner of street and City of Salisbury not concerned as the budgeting works differently.

2. Street car park are congested. You just pray you get a car park infront of your own house or apartment.

3. Safety: Mawson lakes shares common amenities with Pooraka. Car break in are common in Mawson lakes. Pooraka is infested with drug addicts and low income class people. You are more safe to live in Pooraka with low class people rather in Mawson lakes.

4. Overrated: Honestly Mawson Lakes does not have much to offer. Streets are small, houses are small with no lawn, the streets are like a maze. The majority of area is dominated by students and middles class large families. The culture is weird.

I enjoyed my time at Mawson Lakes. But not going to buy. Sorry pooraka druggos.

"Lovely community here"

Been here 6 months now, having moved from interstate. Lived in a planned community in Qld and it was great there too. Have found these planned communities really help to reinvigorate the neighbourly vibe that isn't as common in suburbs outside these communities. My neighbours know me by name, and we often talk when out and about. My GP waved at me at the shops! Becoming busy around the lake in warmer weather. So many fit people out exercising. Inspired to start exercising myself!

"This suburb attends to everything"

Mawson lakes is central to the north, north-eastern and central suburbs with great public transport and amenities at your doorstep. It has a very cosmopolitan feel with brand new housing estates and gorgeous apartment blocks situated around the eating and shopping areas. Mawson Lakes is also close to a University campus and all types of amenities which make it very easy for the person who lives here to never wander too far if that is your thing. However, when I was there I found that the broadband infrastructure was horrific and internet speeds were very slow with no real plausible option to pick from. It is also a very expensive suburb for what it offers for land and different parts of Mawson Lakes have been known to have a very high break and enter crime problem with several of my work colleagues who lived there be effected (however I never had an issue with crime from my apartment). Parafield Airport is only a stone throw away which also attracts a large amount of noise from the small aircraft that are constantly in use there.

Great points:
• Great choice of food outlets and restaurants
• Close to all amenities
• Central with great access to other parts of Adelaide

Good points:
• Cosmopolitan feel
• Some beautiful streets and surroundings
• Always something being developed or improved in the area

Bad points:
• Bad internet infrastructure
• Expensive

Ugly points:
• Certain parts of Mawson Lakes attract high crime
• Parafield Airport is next door and attracts a lot of loud noise

"Planes, planes planes! What a noisy place! We had enough we're out!"

Nice place... if you're deaf... 300 to 1200 planes a day...... that's what they say but we're pretty sure it is more than that (couldn't finish that sentence without 2 planes flying overhead). Check Google maps, Mawson lakes is right in the way of the Parafield airport (another plane flying over now). We've been here for more than a year, we're leaving, we had (another one) enough. And another one (hate these 2 engine planes, they're the noisiest!). If it wasn't for the airport, we would be quite happy to stay as the lake is nice and the dog park is awesome but engine noises of low flying planes from 5.30am to 11pm most days (yes public holidays and Sundays too!!). Another one.... and sometimes in the middle of the night too... you think you won't hear it when sleeping deeply? Trust me you do. Another one (yes seriously, not making this up)...

BEFORE YOU DECIDE TO MOVE HERE, come and have fish and chips on the side of the lake any day (another one), Thursday nights are terrible, you'll realise I'm not kidding. Another 2 engine one, and I'm a fast writter.....trying to watch your favorite series with the window open is just impossible... anyway you get the idea (another one) ...

All the best, avoid Mawson lakes, I whish I had asked people that lived here (another one in the distance) before we decided to move here....(last 2 engine one just for you )

The airport opened in 1955. I find these complaints similar to when I lived in Newcastle. People near Williamtown would complain about the RAAF base....... that had been there for decades. Or move into Hunter St and lobby for the bars to close earlier. The logic is kinda breathtakingly stupid to me. And I happily live here.

jeremyb3

Who are you calling stupid?! I only moved to Mawson lakes because we didn't have the choice at the time. Moving from overseas and finding the first job available without a vehicle. I spent a bit of time there before moving and worried about the amount of planes flying right overhead I asked people that I knew lived here before if planes were a problem back then.... they replied No, but it was 15years ago, the amount of planes as been multiplied since to the point where it is an absolute pain. You're happy with it? Good on you, stay there. A lot of people aren't. If it wasn't for the constant noise I would have happily staid there too.

"One of the worst suburbs I have lived in! Get me out of here!"

It is horrible in my area. No parking, terrible quality NBN, located under landing strip of that f&*king airport! All day, every day, incredibly loud low flying light aircraft. Dont let the word light fool you - THEY ARE LOUD. Avoid Tech. Park area of Mawson Lakes AT ALL COSTS. It is legitimately unliveable. I am into heavy metal and its wayyyy too loud even for me. Its currently 7.30am on Boxing Day and I cant sleep in because planes are already out passing low over my house every few minutes. None of this is an exaggeration. Cant wait to leave!! Hate it.

The planes are just... ugh... They drive me to literally feel like shooting them out of the sky. You dont even understand how bad it is. I really needed some sleep this morning as my sick child had me up all night but nooooo the planes!!! THEY NEVER STOP.

Anyone who can ignore the planes (and some other major flaws of Mawson Lakes) are in major denial or got lucky in a prime spot.

I have lived in Payneham, Hillbank, Para Hills, Glenelg, Golden Grove and Melbourne and Mawson Lakes BY FAR is the worst. It doesnt have its own Australia Post 😑

My 2 stars were for the lake (good scenery for a morning run) and my balcony view of it! Oh which I can never enjoy because there is literally... And I mean LITERALLY almost ALWAYS a noisy plane in the sky.

Get me out of here!!!!

I be here all day for study. Few plane noises not much most time, but you talk about plane noise on pilot training days. They call circuit training. Circuit training for student pilot has curfew at night and many student fly big loop from airport, to ocean and back again and they learn flying. It stop at 11, and only once per week maybe twice per week sometime but not more. My friend is student pilot, where you want him to train? You don't worry, he go home as pilot at end of year but another student will come so perhaps you worry again. Go away to hills. Quiet there. Suburbs not for you. You complainer. Live at road, truck too noisy you say. Live in city, too much dirt and cars too noisy you say. Live near harbour, boat too noisy you say. All too bad for you. You drink your cup now - I guess it half empty I am correct. I finish study this year. So you happy I go but always more students. You complain forever for pilot student learning but you catch a plane somewhere with pilot I guess is true! Complain of food on plane too I guessing. Get travels into world and see more then come here again, maybe change mind then. You complain still, then you are sad person forever. Like oasis here and you not see it. I see world and want live here but cannot stay. Maybe we swap. All things to be happy, but you still not happy. It not suburb that make you unhappy. Not happy here then not happy anywhere! Family visit me and all people so friendly. I hope you happy soon in new suburb you arrive to in quiet hills.

"A beautiful place to live...and so much more!"

Have lived here with family for years, and we have enjoyed such a beautiful and friendly and welcoming community from day 1. With over 13,000 permanent residents, Technology Park, UniSA, Woolworths, Foodland, speciality shops, gyms, beautiful walk-ways, and cycle-ways adjacent an open lake and park system with shopping and amenities at your finger-tips, I'm very surprised to learn that the suburb rating is not top 10 for Adelaide. What is going on here!?

I've noticed many of the comments that are negative are clearly from people that have never lived here! Make of that what you will - it's either ignorance or jealousy. If you are considering moving here from interstate or overseas, I would suggest getting onto Realestate.com.au, Google Earth/Google Street View (if you're not an Adelaide local), and if you're an Adelaide local considering moving here, come and check it out in person! We're not hiding anything! Come and see! Cafe's, Restaurants, Gyms, Schools, Beautiful Homes, Beautiful Parks and Playgrounds, and a true community spirit within the neighbourhood. Residents here are always smiling and saying hello as they walk by your home, and your neighbours actually take the time to get to know you.

There's an airport nearby (light-aircraft only!) with the vast majority of aircraft movement related to training future pilots who come here from all over the world, taking the controls of their twin-props and studying aviation at the University of South Australia (Mawson Lakes Campus), and often rent in Mawson Lakes for the duration of their training! Excellent tenants! The evening flight curfew is 11pm, and 9pm on weekends. Regardless of that, inside the modern insulated homes here at Mawson Lakes you rarely hear a thing, and on the odd-occasion that you do, it's gone in moments, and you only heard it in the first place because of a rare occasion that you were sitting in complete silence within your home, which is surely hardly ever! Not once ever, have I, or any member of my family been awoken by aircraft noise. Residents adjacent Adelaide International Airport could not make the same claim being buzzed by 747's!

Other complaints relate to small lot size. I don't even understand that as a complaint. If you don't want a small lot, then don't purchase a small lot! Anyway, there's a mix of lot sizes here ranging from small courtyard styles to much larger traditional lots with good sized backyards, on 700sqm+. It's the suburbs after all. If you want a large lot they are available, however if you're seeking a very large lot or acreage, then the Adelaide Metropolitan area is not for you. I would suggest a rural or hills location. We love the quiet sanctuary of our beautiful courtyard and chose the smaller size on purpose, as it is almost zero maintenance, meaning more time for family, friends and other activities. Regardless, there's plenty of room for family bbq's etc, and parks and playgrounds for the kids are merely minutes walk from the majority of homes anyway, so no issues there. Plenty of room to play and run around.

Get your checklist out, and Mawson Lakes will tick all the boxes. Less than 20 minutes by car to the city, less than 20 minutes to several beautiful beaches, and approx 45 minutes to the Barossa Valley! Incredible. Anyone living in Australia's eastern states will understand how absolutely incredible that is for the prices you currently pay here! Considering the industry that is arriving in Adelaide in the near future (ship building etc), and the thousands of jobs that will bring to the state, much of it within 20 minutes of Mawson Lakes (at Port Adelaide etc), start doing the maths and get in early to this suburb before it's in full swing!

Some Adelaide locals seem to have an ingrained perception of the northern suburbs. Mawson Lakes is many kilometres geographically closer to North Adelaide (North Adelaide is adjacent the Adelaide CBD), than it is to Elizabeth (one of the northern suburbs Adelaide's more snobbish residents often refer to and sneer at). Check out Google Maps and you'll see. Mawson Lakes to North Adelaide (approx 11.6kms) v's Mawson Lakes to Elizabeth (approx 16kms). I'll repeat, Mawson Lakes is geographically closer by a significant margin to North Adelaide than it is to Elizabeth, so I'm not sure what these Adelaide locals reviewing on here are on about when they start linking Mawson Lakes to this prejudice they have with the so-called northern suburbs, as Mawson Lakes is even closer to Adelaide itself for goodness sake! Sure, if you stand in Central Adelaide with a compass, Mawson Lakes faces North. As does North Adelaide, Fitzroy, Medindie, Collinswood, Nailsworth and so on. See what I mean? All very expensive suburbs - geographically North!

I would urge you to start looking beyond many of the negative comments on here, some of them completely absurd, clearly not written by northern suburbs locals and therefore frequently superficial and interlaced with examples and statements based on their own narrow-minded prejudice rather than fact. Make your own judgement, and trust your own decisions. It is a truly tremendous place to live, and we have no regrets choosing to live here, indeed we feel privileged and very lucky to be a part of this community. If we ever move, it'll be to another home here! If you made it to the end of this way too long review, thanks for taking the time to consider this beautiful and safe community in a fantastically convenient location to all that Adelaide has to offer.

If you are referring to my comment is being completely outrageous, under no circumstances did I say for once that Mawson Lakes is a bad area. I only stated that it can SOMETIMES be a bit rough with the crime that does go on around here, but its not very frequent compared to the other northern suburbs, no way. And yeah I have to agree with you, Mawson Lakes should be up there in the top 20s at least. At least!

It is a beautiful area. It just completely takes you to another world, far away from the northern suburbs but still in the northern suburbs, if youd ask me. I, myself, live inner north (north of Regency Road). Labelling myself and others as snobs is immature and ridiculous. I dont feel hurt by that but it was unnecessary.

In conclusion, Im sure you are extremely happy at Mawson Lakes, and thats how most people would love to talk about their area, even the ones who live in the bad areas. And no, Im not ingrained about a stereotypical perspective of the northern suburbs because Ive worked around these areas many times and I hate it. Its worse than the south in my opinion. And thats just the truth! Theres no need to get offended with things we say because you live in a particular suburb that is getting honestly talked about. But then again, I appreciate your honesty because of your experience.

"Clean and quiet, but is dead at nighttime and far from local amenities"

Mawson Lakes, located approximately 25-30 minutes outside of the CBD, is a northern suburb located in Adelaide. Although the northern suburbs tend to have a bad reputation of being rough, scruffy and high crime, Mawson Lakes is one of the very few where you don't occasionally get to experience that. However it can be a bit dodgy at times, and I'm not talking about the lovely streets and homes; nighttime here is pretty much dead. There is no lively atmosphere going on around here, mostly after 8pm. Instead of thriving it's own culture and being very isolated from the crime-ridden surrounds, it's dead quiet at night. Mawson Lakes locals are generally friendly and genuine, with most keeping to themselves at a quiet level. There are some loud dogs that bark and very few loud neighbours, but this is mostly in the rental homes. Mawson Lakes also has a UniSA which is mostly the technology side of things to study at University, so if your into information technology, gaming, programming, those type this fits in perfectly to living only a stones throw away. Close to Mawson Lakes Boulevard where it's full of small shops and eateries to try out, there isn't anything else to look around here but there is other shopping options such as Westfield Tea Tree Plaza at Modbury only 20 minutes away, Ingle Farm Shopping Centre at Ingle Farm about 10 minutes away and Golden Grove Village at Golden Grove roughly 25 minutes but you have options to go further north to Elizabeth Shopping City at Elizabeth, Parabanks Shopping Centre at Salisbury or Munno Para Shopping City at Smithfield. Personally, I would not visit these shopping centres on an occasional basis but it's really the only options you have unfortunately. Honestly, it's a bit too far from things you would want to have close by. Schools such as Endeavour College and Mawson Lakes School both in Mawson Lakes are average but not the best. You don't have much of a choice of schools in the surrounds as well such as Salisbury High School which have bad reputations, so really, the only options you have to name a few is St Paul's College at Gilles Plains, Blackfriars Priory School in Prospect, St Gabriel's School in Enfield, Nailsworth Primary School in Nailsworh, Pooraka Primary School (closest best primary school to Mawson Lakes) in Pooraka or The Heights School at Modbury Heights. Very far as for schools go, but are definitely worth it. Internet access is also been said to be quite slow and bad, but the NBN is already live in the area in some parts.

Overall, Mawson Lakes is a nice, decent and cheap-ish place to invest in with beautiful streets, parks, a lake and walking trails along with mostly friendly people. You don't have many things that are local to the area, though, and nighttime can look like a dead town and this is when it can become pretty on-edge and dodgy. Other than that, it's generally safe all hours and quiet and clean most of the time.

"Beautify Neighbourhood"

In love with Mawson Lakes. Superb public transport, lots of parks, lakes. Train from station takes to city in 15 minutes. It has childcares in different locations. Very quiet. There are ducks in lakes.
The only limitation I found it does not have great shopping option. It has Woolworths and Target but no Coles/BigW/Kmart.
Another point is, internet is a problem here. I ended up with vivid wireless. It is really good.

"Mawson Lakes - a pleasant area for living"

I have lived in Mawson Lakes for 5 years now and I can tell you that it is a very pleasant area to live in. I don't understand how other reviews seem eager to put a very negative light to this area. I'm not saying this is a perfect place, but Mawson Lakes is one of the few suburbs that has a really nice and safe appeal to me. Some people even see this area as a posh place to live in considering the high values of properties here.

Pros:
Park - There are some mini parks and trails around the area but the most prominent is the Promenade. It's a nice place for dining, jogging and strolling. I love walking here early morning. It's close to restaurants and shops and the atmosphere is super relaxing.

Neighborhood- It's a peaceful and quiet neighborhood. Most houses here has a decent and homely appearance. A lot of locals seems to be professionals / international students / decent migrants

Transportation- There's the Mawson Interchange station and just nearby is a wide free public car park which is very convenient to those who wants to transfer the train and leave their car behind. The train always stops in this station. There's also the expressway.

Environment- The place is clean and green, quiet and safe.

Cons:

- I don't know if it's only here in Mawson Lakes but it's not uncommon to find random insects entering our house. Maybe because the area is surrounded by parks, I sometimes see dead/alive grasshoppers, spiders, millipedes, mosquitos etc. at our doorside. They're not plenty to be considered a real pest but it can be a source of annoyance for some.

- Some areas in Mawson Lakes (especially the newer part) is still not NBN approved which means you can't have ADSL2+ only the ADSL1. So if you're going to rent a place here and if you want a hi-speed wifi, you better check your chosen address first.

- It's pretty much a ghost town at 9 pm. No nightlife.

- Cost of living is pretty steep. Expensive properties, average rent just for a one bedroom unit is like 280 plus aud already. Expect to pay more if you want to rent a house.

"I just bought a house in here"

I recently bought a lovely house in Mawson Lakes. I am not originally from the northern suburbs, having lived in North Plympton/ Edwardstown areas. My fiance is from the northern suburbs and had always wanted to live in Mawson Lakes, I was always a bit reluctant. I can say that after being here for 4 months, I absolutely love it and wouldn't pick another suburb! I love the clean streets well-manicured parks/ facilities. You just can't get this any other area, not even the new developments like Lightsview. Anyone who says it is a concrete jungle is not telling the truth, Mawson Lakes has more parks/ playgrounds/ reserves than most established suburbs and is way more green and pretty.

All the neighbours are lovely and it feels like a community, whereas other suburbs you don't get that sense. Mawson Lakes has beautiful eateries, especially the Boatdeck (personal favourite- great food!). I love that the uni is based in Mawson Lakes, as it creates a life and buzz about the place.

Everyone always goes on about having to be 'close' to the city, what for? I don't go in there unless I have too, as with many people, why would I? Everything is within a short drive. By the way, it is very close to the city 13km! If I want to go to the city, Mawson Lakes has great public transport, kind of has too, as the uni is situated here.

Let's face it if you are purchasing a house in Mawson Lakes you need to have a bit of money, as a house is not cheap in here. So for those people providing negative comments about living in here, probably don't have the money too!

A fantastic place to live whether you are single, married, retiree etc...

"Concrete urban jungle"

Surrounded by busy arterial roads and directly in the flight path for a pilot training school featuring thousands of aircraft movements a day!
The incessant buzz of the aircraft can continue from dawn to 11pm as there is no curfew. Being overflown at low altitude every few minutes is seriously a sleep inhibitor. I would imagine that there are areas that are outside the flight path, so choose wisely when you buy. DON'T believe the real estate agent! Check it out for yourself by parking in the street with the car windows down.

Seems to me people arent allowed to have honest negative opinions of Mawson Lakes on here without being shot down.
Not sorry guys. Wish Id read this review before moving into Tech Park in a beautiful lakeside property a year ago. You guys must be drinking the local water supply to think its so amazing.

The NBN sucks, its surrounded by arterial passages where people drag each other off all night. The footpaths around the lake are starting to sink from soakage. Theres nowhere near enough carpark (eg. Never have a big party because theres not enough parking for a 2+ household). Some days a plane passes LOW over my house every minute of the day up until 11pm! I am in a heavy metal band and the planes are wayyyy too loud for me to ignore! I wouldnt mind occasionally but its ALL DAY EVERY DAY NO EXAGGERATION!
The lake and my view is beautiful but nearly everything else sucks truly.
Oh and it doesnt even have its own Australia Post office! Ps. Dont shoot my comment down. This is my honest experience. I cant wait to leave.

"Lovely Place to Retire"

The quietest suburb in which to retire, none of these heavy traffic. This suburb boasts a picturesque lake with some birdlife, a tree-lined park with tennis courts, pleasant walks to various eateries and shops, regular buses to city. There's only one major retirement village here and its quality is high standard with nice garden along the quiet Trinity Circuit.

"What is not to like about Mawson Lakes? It's awesome!"

Mawson Lakes is a northern suburb situated in the city of Adelaide. The council it is located in is the City of Salisbury. There is more positive than negative about Mawson Lakes. The positive list is that it's 30 - 40 minutes away to and from the city centre. Public transport is rather convenient, with the Mawson Lakes Interchange, where it's an interchange stop for buses to stop and go into the city or out further in the northern suburbs, as far as Gawler (correct me if I'm wrong). House buying in Mawson Lakes is cheap or some houses are even expensive, so in between. Residents in the Mawson Lakes area love to keep their house clean and tidy, with either cleaning their front yard, cutting the lawn, cleaning the house, etc. Probably 97 percent of the residents are very friendly, with people saying hello to you in the street, parklands or along the lake trails. There is a main lake that run through Mawson Lakes. There are also houses lining up along the lake, which looks pretty. As I mentioned 'lake trails', there is a fairly large and wide walking trail along the lake where you can walk along or ride a bike. It looks beautiful at night, though. There are a lot of eateries to choose from along Mawson Lakes Boulevard as well. But the best one is the Mawson Lakes Hotel (Main Street). Check out their website for more information. The suburb is generally very safe with no break-in's, car drive-by shootings or anything else like that. The internet isn't really that great, but there might be something at the shops which makes the internet faster. Parking is good, with quite a few parking spots. Shopping is ok, but not all the best. But who cares?! You've got Tea Tree Plaza at Modbury, and the city. So not really something to argue about. There are some really great parklands in Mawson Lakes, along with playing fields, playgrounds for the kids (they love them!), and long trails for the fit people, adults, bikes, or even an evening stroll.
It's also a very green suburb, as being one of the greenest suburbs in SA, because of no water restrictions. The security of the area is fairly great, with a lot of security cameras around to keep you safe and secure (security cameras aren't in the houses, though!). So, yes. This is my long review about Mawson Lakes. Hope it helps!

Exactly. The haters are just jealous that they can't afford buying a house in Mawson Lakes, and like to have a go about it!

jackj10

There is State Government housing as well as community housing in the apartment complexes. There are also "award of the state" houses. I work in a government agency and this is fact. As for crime, if you follow the police link for your suburb you will find its actually equal with the Eliazabeth suburbs. Mawson Lakes is Salisbury with a nice name. And as for having money.. anyone with money does not live here so get off your high horse. Its a middle income suburb.

"Thoughts on Mawson Lakes."

Mawson lakes is a tricky one to judge. Within the establishment it has it's many ups and downs. But do the goods out weigh the bad's ? soon find out!

Many times have I been exposed to Mawson lakes. Ever since i was a little child when mum and dad would go display home hunting in the cascades. As time passed new sections have been built and i take my hat off to them as Mawson lakes is an absolute beautiful modern day neighbourhood. This is due to the man laws the owners must follow, if not followed a fine will be coming your way!

Their are many cafe's, shops and beautiful lakes ( when not dried out ) to look at. Not to mention the world class university facilities ( UNI SA ) and technology center. The locals are friendly and the housing is extremely affordable!.. sounds like a dream right.

Now to the negative.

From Pt Adelaide it takes about 15 minutes to travel to Mawson Lakes so having a normal job in the city or metropolitan areas can be challenging however I hear the transport system is not to bad but who takes a bus these days anyway lol. The second negative is that Mawson lakes is a powerhouse. Literally.. Mawson lakes's power consumption is extremely high due most likely to air-conditioners in the summer as most of the houses are of a cheap build and being in a geographically hotter part of Adelaide this dosent work in its Advantage. You also get planes flying over you daily from Parafield airport and please don't get me started on the mosquitoes you will be encountering if you leave the 4 walls in your house!

Overall Mawson lakes is nifty little up and coming suburb but unfortunately is a little too far away for my liking to Metropolitan Adelaide and I don't think i could substitute the beach for a lake and what not.
If you are looking for affordability and style be my guest you'll love it, but I dont see sustainability in the future as you will be riddled with the negatives!

Just my opinion guys! Go for a drive down to Mawson's and see for yourself !

Shearwater

I live in Mawson Lakes unlike the “Review above” so let me tell you what is TRUE and what is FALSE.

Mawson Lakes development started in 1998 and I have lived here for 6 years and my son has lived here for 10 years in his own home.

NO such thing as ‘fines’ that is rubbish. If you build your home as my son did then you do have to go by some rules like colour bond fencing etc. I bought established so I didn’t have to worry about that stuff.

Mawson Lakes has many lakes and creeks but only the creeks dry out when it doesn’t rain for a while as for the lakes they are always and have always been full of water. (We have recycled water in Mawson Lakes this water is the envy of other suburbs that fills many of our lakes and we use it in our gardens too)

Mawson Lakes is only approx. 13km from the CBD
Port Adelaide is approx. 14.5km from the CBD

If small planes bother you don’t live next to Parafield Airport. This would be the only negative I could come up with. But remember the Airport has been operating since 1955.

Electricity is the same as any other suburb. If you use it lots you will have a high bill because Mawson Lakes has a lot of 4 bedroom large houses air conditioners are probably going to cost you more. e.g. I live in a 4 bedroom home that’s large so my power bill is on the high side (so I got Solar Power problem fixed) as for my son his 4 bedroom is a cottage so he uses considerably less.

Mosquitoes! I have lived in several suburbs in Adelaide in the past 30 years so I can tell you that if you get bitten by mosquitoes in those suburbs its no different.
Mosquitoes love me but don’t even bite my husband, son or daughter if we are sitting outside in our alfresco area. If you are near a creek it may be different but I live on Shearwater Lake and it’s just like living in Modbury.

I think that reviews should be done by locals so that you get a true indication of a suburb. (not people that just drive by)

I appreciate your response and the facts you bring forward are pretty strong! my review is just my opinions on how i feel ( as any review ) I'm not getting all technical and what not! You should do a review for yourself if you feel the need to. But thanks for the response nether less!

If you move to Mawson Lakes be prepared for some weird people who cannot take any criticism. As for small planes, they are flying so low and loudness is extreme, basically nonstop all day. The airport is a pilot training field that goes nonstop all day and into late hours of the night. Beware.

"Mawson Lakes. Home to Technology Park!"

Mawson Lakes is a northern to western suburb. It offers a whole range of varieties for everyone to choose from. Mawson Lakes has a lot of eateries to choose from. The point I love about Mawson Lakes is the lakes and parks. They are really well kept and kids love them.
Mawson Lakes is the Greenest in South Australia because of the no water restrictions.
The suburb is home to Technology Park, were their are offices and UniSA Mawson Lakes Campus.
Getting into the city isn't too difficult because, you have the incredible Mawson Lakes Interchange. Buses running bus after bus then either heading up to the northern suburbs or into the CBD. Getting into the city in the mornings on Sailsbury Highway is terrible. Luckily, you have Main North Road to cheer you up. Why this? Because its not that busy on some days.
The friendliness in Mawson Lakes is super friendly! Either in the parks or walking trails along the lakes, you will find that the people here are super friendly, they will be happy to say "Good Day" or "Hello" I find it incredibly safe. The one bad point is the internet. So, you will need to get a internet set top box (I think there not that expensive to buy)
So move to Mawson Lakes and fall in love! Make sure to buy a internet set top box!

P.S: How long does it take from Mawson Lakes to get to the city? Anyone of you can answer that on my question: "How long does it take from Mawson Lakes to get into the city with current traffic?" Thanks.

"Mawson Lakes is the best"

I have lived in Mawson Lakes for the last 7 years. It is getting bigger and busier but I find that I like the vibrancy this brings to the neighbourhood. The parks and lakes are just great and I love that they draw lots of people out of their homes. Of an evening there are many many people out and about jogging, walking, pushing prams or having fun with the kids in the playgrounds or around the lakes.
Personally, I am happy with not having a big back yard to look after and seeing so many people out and about encourages me to be active too.

I find it a very safe suburb. I live near one of the lakes and walk around it at night with no problems.I love the location. I am 15 mins away from Semaphore Road and beach and 20 mins away from North Adelaide. If I want to go into the city I can do that by public transport or by car. It takes me under 30mins. If I want to visit the Northern wine districts it takes me 30mins to get past Gawler and into the foot hills.

There is always something of interest going on, especially in summer. Festivals, bands, fireworks, film nights. I can walk to the shops through the park. It takes less than 10mins.We often go for a walk on a Friday evening and have a drink at the Boatdeck cafe. It is always packed along with the Mawson Lakes Hotel. On Sunday, my partner and I often go for a long walk along the main lake and through Technology Park and finish by having a coffee at one of the cafes. I agree that the parking is tight in Mawson Central but most of Mawson Lakes is OK. The internet is patchy and this can be frustrating at times.

Overall, Mawson Lakes is a lovely suburb to live in. I honestly don't know what else you could ask for.

"Could have been done better....."

I smell a few real estate agents providing too many five star ratings. I have lived in a house and apartment at Mawson Lakes. In terms of recreation, parks, gyms, medical facilities, childcare, public transport and schools, the facilities are excellent. With this in mind, it sounds great for singles, couples and families. I am single but wouldn't raise a family here due to the claustrophobic feel with the neighbouring residences and the small backyards. Yes, there are plenty of parks, but kids need outdoor recreation without parent supervision.

You get what you pay for with internet access and wireless is really the only option for the newer developments. There is a significant lack of shopping with the population outgrowing the current facilities, but the recent stage two approval will see more shopping provided in 18 long months. The express checkout lanes at Woolworths after work get very, very long and should be avoided. If you like getting your haircut there are about six hairdressers but if you like a drink there is only one pub, well, it's a small room within the Mawson Lakes hotel that is favoured by the tradies after work and seems to attract all the undesirables. If you’re looking for a great meal you won't find it in Mawson Lakes, if you’re looking for a quite meal and a wine you won't find it at Mawson Lakes, but if you’re a family looking to go out for a meal then you'll be somewhat spoilt for choice. In summary, nightlife for singles and couples is really non-existent which is surprising due to the large university population.

Someone indicated it is pest free. They sometimes call Mawson Lakes, Mossy Lakes and there is a good reason for that, but only during the summer months. If you’re looking to buy a house or apartment, have a good look over the construction and finish. A lot of the houses/apartments were built on the cheap by developers making a quick dollar. Property is relatively expensive so buyers beware.

Overall, the suburb provides all the facilities for families without the backyard and all the recreation for singles/couples without the nightlife. Hope this provides a more accurate and objective view.

P.S. The main lake is starting to collapse and some sections have been closed off for over 12 months so take caution if buying property close to this area.

spacetrumpet, I'm sure the developers of Mawson, which so happen to have been the creators of West Lakes and Golden Grove, would successfully plan out and construct a beautiful neighbourhood with nothing but positive, better than you could ever try to create your "ideal" neighbourhood since you think Mawson Lakes "Could have been done better...". "An Up and Coming area"

Mawson Lakes offers all you need, and is a good spot for raising a family with a number of schools in the region as well as recreational and sporting facilities.

It is an "Up and Coming" area where the facilities are fabulous.

The Lakeside Cafe and Resturants are a great place to relax and meet up with friends.

Following is some more information as why Mawson Lakes is one of the best places to work and live:

*Work and live in the same suburb with many companies based at Mawson Lakes
*Central to City-Beach-Barossa Valley
*Recycled water
*3 Amazing Lakes
*Interchange Transport Hub
*12 kilometres to the City
*Restaurants and cafes
*Retirement Village
*Specialty shops with up and coming bigger Woolworths and proposed Big W store.
*Technology Park
*Dog Park
*26 kilometre network of Hike and Bike trails
*Beach Volleyball Courts
*Canoeing
*Tennis Courts
*Basketball Courts
*9 Hole Golf Course
*Kayaking
*Model Boat Sailing
*BBQ facilities as well as over 100 playgrounds, parks and gardens

The suburb is home to ‘Technology Park’, which is the base for the head offices of a number of technological businesses, including a large concentration of defence contractors and telecommunications companies. It is also the base for a campus of the University of SA.

One cannot ask for anything else in this new and up coming area.

"Mawson Lakes"

I bought then sold in Mawson Lakes a couple of years ago. I guess I was seduced by the marketing machine that surrounds the place. I think the problem with a lot of these newer master planned places is they're built for profit. That in itself is not a bad thing but I ended up leaving because the blocks tend to be small with a lot of courtyard homes. That doesn't allow for much in the way of garden which in turn gives the impression of being surrounded by built form and makes the place feel hot and oppressive. No front gardens generally doesn't help and makes the streetscape a little dull and austere. The lack of established street trees also adds to the feeling. The fact that all the homes are built within 10 or so years of one another means they are usually similar in style and appearance, which isn't always a bad thing but often is.

Your ratings. - Clean and Green you gave a poor rating are you sure you lived in the suburb cause the last time I looked out my window it stays green all year round because of the recycled water in the area. And as for your poor rating on Doctor's, shops, heaps of parks and public transport your telling porky pies with that too. Not sure you really lived in the suburb Celice.

How about you respond with some facts and list out what they have missed. As it stands, you only have one medical centre. There is only one Woolies. Not much choice, this is a fact. For 15000 people this is not cool. A lot has been over looked. There is a high rental level, there are high levels of student accommodation. The town houses and houses are built quickly which is an indicator of low quality, made for profit.....

Because, everyone patients runs out, immensely when people they say bad things about Mawson Lakes.

North do you like, own land in Mawson Lakes that you are trying to sell or something? Or are you trying to justify your decision to buy/live in Mawson Lakes, South Australia's Technology Hub, with worse than Country town internet?

There seems to be a lot of blind fanboyism evident in your comments, especially the attacks on people who have posted their opinions, you generally do not see this level of fanboyism in anything except for video game forums.

I am looking for a house in Mawson Lakes.
The reason why I am telling people to change their comments is because, Mawson Lakes is truly a marvelous place to live. This is why, because I've had several friends who still live in the suburb, and they say there is nothing better than Mawson Lakes.

In conclusion, I just want to say to everyone that I am sorry for saying things that people generally have their opinion on, and I want them to change their text. Well now, I do not want them to change their text to a better comment. Sorry. :(
P.S. If you are saying that the internet at Mawson Lakes is worse than country towns, all you need to do is get a Internet set top box, then you will change your mind saying it runs really fast.

"Not sure what you are saying?" If you lived in the area you would have something more interesting to say. Your loss.

If you are going to comment on a suburb that you obviously dont live in and have no idea dont bother.

smoon

Some pleople are so jealous they can't live in a beautiful suburb so they have to write something nasty. Maybe they sould let us know the wonderful suburb they live in or are they simply too embarrassed to say?

This information is absolutely NO help to anyone.

Or maybe if someone was living in Elizabeth, and they comment very happily and proudly about where they live, that is fine, but when you comment about another neighbourhood which you have visited before and loved that area, and then go onto Homely, type in a review saying 'This is a rubbish neighbourhood' is just silly and selfish. I think a few people out there don't know what to do with their lives and do something which if residents look at the bad review, then the resident will say 'That's not true!' So this is my brief comment about how stupid some people are to do these things.

"OK but not great"

When I worked there I never really like going out to Mawson Lakes, too far away, always felt a bit too open and dusty.

Buddha23

Not sure how long ago you worked (not lived) in Mawson Lakes but this suburb is the greenest in South Australia because there is NO WATER RESTRICTIONS so how can it be dusty? Also neigbourly spirit is great and all the people say "Good day" to as you walk past them when walking the dog. Its got great community spirit but if you don't live in the area you would not know I suppose.

And the eating out is great so much choice we have people come from other suburbs to eat at Mawson Lakes.

Shearwater

Why even comment when never lived in the suburb. This review is of no help to anyone just a waste of space.

smoon

Its been a few years since you have seen Mawson Lakes I invite you to come and see how its changed. As with any new development it can be a little dusty at first but it has changed so much and it is nothing like you say. So come down and maybe you will change your review because its out dated.

God, why is everyone say bad things about Mawson Lakes. Maybe because they don't have anything else to to so they might as well go on to StreetAdvisor, type in a suburb, and just write a nasty comment! For the people who are writing bad things about Mawson Lakes, there is no way I would call that "TRUE"! There loss!

"New, Beautiful, Convenient, Desirable!"

8 years ago we did not have any plans to move out of our family home in Oakden until one day we passed through Mawson Lakes and absolutely fell in love with it. One month later we signed land contract and soon after started building out new dream home. Since then we never regretted our decision.
This is absolutely fantastic suburb that looks more like a self contained town with everything you may need within a walking distance. Schools, shopping, restaurants, fast-food, medical, parks, walking trials, lakes, pub, library, banks, public transport, pharmacy, deli, beauty saloons and lots of other services are here.
The location of the suburb on Adelaide's map is quite convenient too. It takes only 14 minutes to get to the City by train, 10 minutes drive to the beach. New Gepps Cross Housemaker Centre eliminates long travel to furniture and home appliances stores. And if the proposed Harbor Town style factory outlets are built nearby, it will definitely make it the best location in Adelaide.

"Mawson Lakes"

There's a lot going for Mawson Lakes - good schools, a university campus, a modern library, good shops, lots of small businesses, lots of large businesses, nice scenery, good public transport, etc. The only thing against it? The ridiculous pieces of 'art' floating in the lake!

"Nice if you're into the 'keeping up with the Jones' lifestyle"

Great for eating out. Great for safe and secure lifestyle. Nearly always quiet. But neighbours just don't talk to one another, everyone keeps to themselves. It's like a big competition for who has the biggest car, nicest house, best lawn etc.... odd place really

"The booming CBD of Adelaides North with magnificent lifestyle & work opportunities."

Live, work & play describe the Mawson Lakes Lifestyle to a tee. My business is located in Mawson Central, my kids go to school here & we are have recently moved into our second house located in the Cascades development of Mawson Lakes. Which other suburb only 20 minutes by car & 15 by train from Adelaides CBD can boast the wonderful opportunities that Mawson Lakes has to offer. A thriving culturally diverse community with 1000,s of jobs located right here in our suburb as well.

Stage 2 of the Mawson Lakes shopping Centre is due to commence early in 2010 so things will get even better.

If your looking for a modern, vibrant & opputunistic place to live this is certainly the place to be.

"Self Contained Suburb"

We bought in Mawson Lakes about 12 months ago. We have been stoked with what we have found. We're both fairly active and the running tracks are great and just awesome scenery around the lakes. Lots of others out early morning also and everyone says G'day. Great community feel, great facilities, well maintained suburb and love the recycled water. (no water restrictions). I believe a cinema is on the planning agenda also. The one minor issue that I have is that we don't have access to cable internet (so we have installed satellite internet) and no cable pay TV (so we have installed satellite pay tv). Otherwise just an awesome suburb and when we sell we will buy in Mawson Lakes again.

"Well-serviced suburban living to the north of Adelaide"

Mawson Lakes is a huge residential area that has grown very rapidly to the north of city. It is about 12 kilometres from Adelaide, and can be a 25 minute drive (which can be a bit longer in peak hour).
The area has grown rapidly, with a number of modern subdivision style homes. Many have state-of-the-art design elements, so it is definitely not your average subdivision.

There are a number of lifestyle elements here, with a beautiful lake in the heart of the suburb with a number of cafes, restaurants and shops nearby.

The suburb is home to ‘Technology Park’, which is the base for the head offices of a number of technological businesses, including a large concentration of defence contractors and telecommunications companies. It is also the base for a campus of the University of SA.

Mawson Lakes offers all you need, and is a good spot for raising a family with a number of schools in the region as well as recreational and sporting facilities.
