Cheap & safe areas to rent in Melbourne?

Next year, My friend and I are planning to go to university in Melbourne and as we live more than an hour away, we don't really want to catch a train which takes almost 2 hours to get to the city almost everyday so we are looking for cheap but safe places to rent a 2 bedroom house in Melbourne or in surrounding suburbs.
We are willing to pay at most $300 per week but it would be much better if it was cheaper than that.
We have looked at Pascoe Vale, Tarneit and Clayton but they are all a little pricey.
Does anyone know of any safe neighbourhoods that are relatively cheap and close to transport?

Hi ElisabethDungey,

I'm afraid $300 per week for a 2 bedroom apartment won't get you much that is close to Melbourne Uni. That is a very low on the scale in most of Melbourne. Here are a few places I have found with a quick search though:

Brunswick West
