Where should we live?

Looking to buy our first home and we cant seem to decide where. We are chalk and cheese please help! Currently live in outer Northern suburbs and its not bad but not quite the right fit for me. Its a bit out of our price range to buy in the area we're renting in (Mill Park.) We're thinking about maybe buying in Kilmore as we have both lived in the town previously and think its quite nice. Only thing is its a bit further out than we would like. My ideal area would be relatively close to farmers markets, health food shops and has bit of a green minded community. Just feels like the Northern suburbs dont have any of that. My husband wants to be able to commute easily to work in Campbellfield/Tullamarine region.
I would rather live in a small established country town than in a new suburb with no infrastructure. But my husband is very much interested in the newer outer suburbs with the cheaper price tag. We cant afford to buy further in but don't want to be too far out. Would like no more than 50 minutes commute, less preferably.
Is there such a place that would be a good compromise for us both? We have young kids so the first priority is a safe family friendly area with decent public schools.
