There is a spot called Pelican Point near there - on the river. Just go behind UWA and follow the roads around and then head towards the water. It is a pretty good spot for the family to go with a small playground as well. There is a business that runs lessons and hires equipment that is usually there as well. Thy could tell you about local conditions - I just watch!
