Reviews of Port Hedland, WA

"Port Hedland"

Port Hedland is a nice town that will get better with improvements from private and public companies. Port Hedland is safer than south but not everything gets told in Port Hedland. Port Hedland has alot to offer and not for everyone. Tips for investors = buy establish homes on descent size land, develop or retain, extend and if you want to rent a nice home in port usually the more expensive ones get rented first. For families with kids, theres plenty to do if you seek.

Great for

  • $$$
  • You will meet new friends

Not great for

  • Hot
  • If you rent and pay yourself, ouch.

Port Hedland is an area people live for work opportunities, permanent residents approx 15000 with thousands fly-in-fly-out workers living in accommodation camps, entertainment is limited.

Permanent living 2.5 star, though Council has plans for this to improve.
Work opportunies 4 star, Country-side to explore 4 star.

"Town full of expansion and opportunity if you want it!"

Port Hedland is a strong community based town, with lots of history.
There is not too many mine sites available within a short driving distance to home, no flying away from families etc.
The local sporting facilities are good and are in the process of upgrade and expansion.
Port Hedland football club is upgrading the entire oval with a resurfacing project and better facilities.
The local Turf and Yacht clubs are also in the process of upgrades with new facilities being constructed.
Shopping / retail therapy is not the greatest by any means but does provide essentials.
In the near future the local government has plans of new shopping centres in the South Hedland area, which is 18klms inland of Port Hedland.
Primary Schools seem to provide adequate education, but hard to comment as my kids are not at that age group yet.
BHPBilliton have constructed a day care centre in the suburb of Cooke Point, unsure if this is available to the public or just employees.
Some great little playground areas have been implemented around the Port Hedland area and along the beach front.
Port Hedland is a great little family town, great fishing and camping for the family.
There is also the Karijini National park about 3.5Hrs drive towards Mt Newman township inland of Port Hedland.
Yes it does get Hot up here in summer, but with airconditioned housing, cars and shopping centers makes it bearable for the family.
Winter conditions here can not be beaten, best time for camping and family activities.

Heaps of opportunity for business growth or career enhancment.

Hi, Leese and Cozzie,
How is Port Hedland? We 'might' be moving to port Hedland too with our 4 little kids..... I am worried about the crime.

Did you end up moving? What's it like? Looking for an updated perspective, might be moving there for hubby's work, we have 4 small kids. Is there better areas / safer? Or more kids friendly? Is the community welcoming or clicky?

"Port Headland - thriving community in north WA"

Port Headland is a large port town in the Pilbara area of W.A. and is approx 1761 kms from Perth depending on which highway you take. Port headland has a population of over 14,000 and is an import port for the receiving of fuel and the export or iron ore from the inland mines. Other industry in the area which employs many people is the Natural gas offshore platform as well as livestock. The climate at Port headland is very hot in summer and can be very humid with cyclone activity not uncommon. Winter is ideal and a great time to visit from the colder southern areas. Port Headland has a storm surge problem so the satellite town of South headland houses the main administration centre and has a large population of 40,000. The area has a large and very functional shopping centre, as well as the Port Headland Base Hospital with great well trained medical staff. Housing in Port headland had a boom a few years ago due to an increase in the mining industry and this saw a climb in the median home prices. Still if you are looking to live in this area and have suitable work the prices are not beyond reach.
