"South Hobart is Hobart's first suburb"

Settled by the merchant and professional classes in the 1800s, who wanted to get away from the noise and smell of Hobarton, South Hobart is Hobart's first suburb and home to many of the most beautiful homes in Hobart, including the classical Georgian residence of Milton and the Henry Hunter-designed Ashleigh. The oldest brewery in Australia, the Cascade Brewery still operates and tourists visit the historic Female Factory which was an institution to reform female convicts around the mid 1800s. A strong sense of community and ‘village-like’ culture exists in what many call SoHo. For a city-fringe suburb it is very leafy with bush trails for walkers and cyclists leading all the way to the top of iconic Kunanyi (Mount Wellington), and its not surprising there is a high proportional Green vote here. Before the Southern Outlet, travellers to the Huon Valley would pass through South Hobart and to this day there are many residents who move to and from these locations through their life stages. Apart from walking distance to the City CBD, other conveniences include South Hobart Primary School, a restaurant, café, and pub strip with local grocery and post office.

"A bit TOO green"

area is nicce but a bit too green. gets alot of bugs and the darkness and clodness is winter sucks. it gets really cold during winter months and i used to hate it alot. It is closer to shops but can be scary at night with some people from the clubs finding their way to wander so wouldnt reccomend for a family but a young couple might be able to live here okay

"Just a great place to live and play."

I love to come home of an evening and just instantly feel relaxed. Its so quiet and warm, it really does feel like you are miles away from the hustle and bustle of the city but you are really no longer than 10 minutes away. The people in South Hobart are friendly and it’s a great place to bring up kids. There are parks and walking tracks everywhere. It’s Simply the Best...

"Faults? Not One..."

I moved to South Hobart in 2003 from Sandy Bay. I loved sandy Bay and still do, but my heart was taken by South Hobart. The Charm and character of the homes, and beautiful views and scenery take your breath away. I moved to South Hobart because we were a young family and i wanted a suburb with a great sense of community to bring up my children in, and i have never looked back. The kids love all the parks and walking tracks as well, and we as parents love the great schools. I love South Hobart and am hard pressed to find any faults. It is certainly 'One In A Million'.

"So close to the city, but so far away...."

It literally takes me 15mins to get to work in the city from the minute I walk out the door, but when I'm home I feel like i live a million miles away. It is so peaceful and quiet with great access to bush walking trails and leafy green park. People also say South Hobart is cold, but we are on top of the hill (not in the valley) and we find it is actually much warmer than the suburbs that are closer to the water, although in the afternoon the sun is caught behind the mountain early than in other places.

Hi. We are looking at South Hobart too and have been warned not to go too far south due to the shadow of the mountain. Would you be able to give me a borderline of the best streets are for the sun in Sth Hobart or how far not to go for the shadows?

South Hobart has certainly pleased me beyond my very high expectations. I am very picky with the suburbs in which I live and South Hobart has proved to be one of my favourites. There is a great feeling of neighbourly love in South Hobart, everybody helps their neighbours and build great relationships that provide a great background to raise children and be social. I was pleasantly surprised by the great coffee shops and boutique home wear shops. I couldn't give South Hobart anything less than a 5 Star Rating.

"One Of The Best"

i was asked by my neighbour to write an honest and fair review of how i have found South Hobart. I was only too happy to oblige, I have found South Hobart to be simply one of the best suburbs in Hobart, i have lived in a fair few suburbs over my life, and South Hobart is where i want to spend the rest of my life. The atmosphere is great, everybody is friendly and there is so many beautiful houses which go well the aesthetically pleasing vista that South Hobart has to offer. There is good views in all directions, and it has a surprisingly country feel considering that its only 5 minutes to the CDB. I will never ever live in any other suburb now that I have found South Hobart.

"Peaceful, Sunny and Only 5 Minutes to the CDB"

Nearly all of my friends are envious of the quick and efficient commute to the city centre. I can get up at eight o'clock in the morning and leave at about 8.50 and be at work early when I start at 9. Not only can South Hobart boast about its quick commute time to the CBD but it also has fantastic views of the Derwent River, The City centre and the gorgeous Mount Wellington. Neighbours are only too friendly but not intrusive, everything you want in a neighbour! The All day sun will warm your house and the balmy summer nights are best enjoyed with a few friends and a nice cool drink, which you can enjoy while taking up the beautiful city lights and reflections off the river. All in all South Hobart gets a 5 star rating from me, it has so many wonderful aspects and can not be faulted.

"Prestigious and charming"

South Hobart is a great place to live. It is full of wonderful parks and gardens and there is so many places to explore and many things to discover. South Hobart can be summed up as 'A prestigious suburb with High Walled mansions and quaint cottages' I absolutely love it. People all around are friendly and there is an abundance of coffee shops and cute little nick-nack stores to shop in. It is quiet and the houses just scream character and charm. All my neighbors are ultra friendly but un-intrusive. There is a great sense of community and frankly i wouldn't want to live any where else in the world. Fantastic city and water views and a great north facing aspect adds comfort and warmth to the suburb i can only sum it up as a 'A Million Dollar Suburb'

"Best Suburb in Hobart"

I have lived in South Hobart for 22 Years and i would happily say that i would not want to live in any other suburb. South Hobart is warm and friendly. It enjoys a full sun aspect and bliss views over the city and mountain. There are great Coffee shops and local grocers. Many quaint and quirky houses add to the charter and great vibe that South Hobart has. Along with quaint houses are so many fantastic shops. If you ever need something little for a present or are just looking for a few of classy and elegant shops look no further. I have caught the public transport from South Hobart for 10 years and i find its fantastic if you work in the city. I can just walk 5 minutes to the bus stop and catch the bus and its so quick and efficient. My neighbors are the best we often have conversations over the fence but you also have the privacy to not talk if you don't feel like it. Often the neighbors will come over and we will share a gin and tonic or two and they will have a swim in our pool while enjoying the peace and serenity of the best suburb in Hobart.

"A perfect family place"

Quite often we will meet friends and their children and go and have a bbq in one of the many parks around. There are several great cafes in the area that make great coffee. Some houses have fantastic views over the city and of the mountain. We get all day sun and the moring sun actually heats the whole house. Our view is fantastic and it is lovely to sit down of an evening and see the lights on in the city and on the Tasman Bridge, I think South Hobart is fantastic and has a lovely sense of community and is great for everyone as there is such a vast mix of all ages in the area! It's a really quiet and friendly place to live. Best of all it is only 5 minutes drive to the city centre.

"South Hobart is Great !"

Compared to most other suburbs, South Hobart is quiet, sunny and safe. There are many couples, young families and older persons who enjoy close access to shops, schools and doctors. Getting to the city is easy with a walk or cycle down the historic Hobart Rivulet Linear Park or by car.
Having lived here for 15 years I can say I would not want to live anywhere else. The environment is clean and more green compared to other suburbs, and a population that has a sense of community and a diversity that is well tolerated. Where I live the neighbours look out for each other without being intrusive. There is a good reason South Hobart continues to be a place people want to live !

"Lovely and green but peace & quiet regularly destroyed (most houses poorly located & constructed)"

South Hobart is lovely and green, the worst thing is a problem that is common in Hobart, which is that most houses have been built in a very old-fashioned way, i.e. right up against the street and without insulation (particularly in the walls & windows). This means that traffic noise can be a major problem. If you love trees, then, visually, South Hobart is one of the best areas in Hobart. It's just a big shame about the way houses have been built here. I have rated it "noisy" because although it is very quiet *in the intervals* between the hoon/truck noise, that quietness is regularly destroyed, which is a really sad thing. In the house we are renting, you can feel the vibrations made by passing traffic in the floorboards - that is how badly most houses here have been built and planned, location-wise. Usually there's a huge yard out the back, but the house is right smack up against the road. (Living here I've also noticed even more squashed wild fauna than usual on the roads on the day after the hoons have one of their night-time rallies, and this is also rather depressing.)

Thanks so much for this and your other comment on the Huon road. We live up north on the West Tamar and it's much the same, a lot of noise and a lot of people in denial. For the view I think it might be among the most beautiful places on Earth, but you wouldn't want to live here. So as a couple considering the big move down to Hobart you've given us valuable information, thanks again.

lovesoho

Well all i have to say is that this is only one experience. I live in a federation house, not a masterpiece but just an average house. It does not currently contain insulation in the walls, but we are working towards it (for heating purposes). The street i live on is great (Wentworth Street) there is no noise and it is quiet. You have reviewed Huon RdNot a main Rd is going to be noisy and yes a new house built to modern standards would be quieter but in reality in one of the oldest suburbs in Hobart its not something that you will find.. A main Rd like Huon Rd is going to be noisy, but all Main Rds are. I think its quite a shame that you are experiencing noise like this, but before passing judgement on South Hobart i think you should experience what it means to be in the 'heart' of South Hobart, living on a quiet lovely street.

lauriec

lovesoho, my review is an honest review based on my experience. Yes, it applies especially to Huon Road (and any major through-road in South Hobart or probably any other Hobart suburb). The point is that people who don't know the area extremely well, or haven't yet made the mistake of living on a major through-road might benefit from my review. I wish that I had read such a review before renting on Huon Road - it would have saved me from a nightmarish year. The fact that you personally feel fond of South Hobart and have had a fortunate experience living there doesn't change the reality of what I and others have experienced and there's no reason for you to take it so personally.

I would have to say i Disagree with this comment, the northerly aspect provides for all day sun, with only a few exceptions like those who live on the 'wrong' side of the valley, maybe then you would experience a tad bit of coldness, but if you pick well, then South Hobart would have been probably one of the warmest suburbs! Its a shame you felt this way about such a fantastic suburb.

Thanks JJaques I also strongly agree with your point of view.
