Looking at buying our first home

Recently moved over from eastern states and have heard good things about many places, but would love to be as close to the water a possible with a great price. Is this an area a young family could raise children?

Hi. I am also looking at buying a house in Spearwood, and not very familiar with the area. I've heard that the suburb has come along well in the last 5 years, but there are still bad parts (like most suburbs I guess). Also, I understand that there is quite a bit of public housing still around. Just wondering if anyone knows where the public housing is, or could recommend which parts to avoid? Thanks!

Hi Jos36,

I can't comment on the area too much from a 'bad parts' or areas to avoid perspective, however, the state housing throughout is primarily concentrated along Pheonix Road, and Spearwood Avenue. There's also a stack of state housing in Hamilton Hill just across Pheonix Road.

Hi, I have lived in Spearwood for 10 years and I would say it has changed a lot in that time in a good way.

We live on the coastal side of Rockingham road which is bounded by Coogee and it’s a lovely area. Mainly young families and retirees, very friendly and community minded. Lots of families of Croatian and Italian descent from history.

Spearwood can be a mixed bag in terms of good and bad pockets. I have always thought the area located east of Rockingham road has been considered a bit ‘dodgy’, but it’s definitely regenerating as new families move in.

It’s literally 10 mins to the beach and Fremantle and the city is 30 mins drive on a good day.

I generally find it to be a peaceful suburb with a good community. It doesn’t feel like being inner city. Lots of green spaces had nature reserves on the western side.
