Is the internet reception really that bad in Thornton? Are you able to get ADSL2 with Telstra?

Yes it is pretty ordinary, I have only just got ADSL1 connected after trying for 5years. I had 3G wireless and it slowed to less than dialup speed during peak times as it is oversubscribed due to lack of wired infrastructure in the area. To get decent wireless speed at peak periods I had to install a directional antenna on the roof and point it to the Tarro or Raymond Terrace towers (less wireless traffic in these areas where the exchange is because adsl is easier to ge).
ADSL2 is available in Thornton by Telstra only, I know several people who have it, but for the average person you would be lucky to get it.
Other Thornton users on other networks also have the same issues.
The new Thornton North (Chisolm) suburb was supposed ot be fibre to the premisis. Hopefully this is still true.

Unfortunately it is! The last time I enquired we could not get ADSL let alone ADSL2. Until recently I have been getting by using 3G with 3 bar signal strength (slow but 100% improvement on dial up). I have recently changed over to pocket WIFI having found a spot in the whole house that actually gets 4 bar signal strength rather than none. Another option I looked into was satellite but my friend who lives in another part of Thornton has it & is not impressed.

It is absolutely shit house , ive got a Vodafone pocket wi fi $140 per month for 50gig only thing i could find, its just thornton other suburbs are fine
