"Relaxing, Friendly and Safe"

Elwood is a great place to live!! Its very eclectic with many professionals, families and artists/actors/muscians living here. It is very female dominated and there are always lots of women walking and running early in the morning and late a night.

In summer if you live near ormond road you will only be a 1-2 minute walk to the beach and 15 minute walk to St Kilda. Elsternwick which is more cosmpolitan can be walked to in 20 minutes or in a few minutes via the 'blue bus' which runs every 10 mins during the weekdays.

Although it can feel clumsy to get to due to lack of railway station, it is only a 35-45 minute bike ride to the city along a dedicated bike path (beach rd bike path then via port melbourne light railway bike path).

A few reviews have mentioned that the area is not good for kids. As I don't have kids I can't speak for this but as it is one of the few inner bayside suburbs with both a primary and secondary school it can only improve in this regard. A number of kids in Elwood also go to the selective state secondary schoold in Albert Park, which has its own bus route 606 to take them from Elwood to Albert Park directly (this is a new development as historically you would have to taken the white or blue bus to Acland st, then the 96 and then the 112 from Park st, St Kilda which wasn't very practical for young teenagers.)

Tiuna Grove is lovely with mature trees lining the street and a 'kink' in the road which reveals the blue waters of the bay as you walk down it from Ormond Rd. Easy walking distance to the 'village' and Turtle, the medical centre and the beach (1 minute including waiting for the lights to change at the pedestrian crossing at the end of the street. Lots of choices in accommodation from 60's orange blocks of 12-16 flats on one side and early art decos from the 1920's division of the Thallasa (intact but now divided into aparmetns) and Tiuna Mansions (Tiuna is still fully intact as a single home). There are also some lovely homes (needing some TLC) from the 20s-30s and some very new apartments and the beginning and end of the street.

Great for

  • Beach Access and Access to the bike paths
  • Easy walking to the Village
  • Art Deco Apartments

Not great for

  • Can be busy in summer when the beach is popular
  • No entry from Beach Rd
