Arthur Street

"A little too close to the action"

One street back from Station Street, it is a little too close to the action. However, the stretch between Heidelberg Road and the railway line is a great spot. Tree-lined, period homes with pretty gardens and still within a short stroll from the shopping strip.

Canning Street

"Arguably the best street in the area"

Wide street flanked by beautiful Victorian terraces. A short stroll from Rathdowne village where you would find good cafes, convenience stores and a few interesting boutiques.

Princes St

"Major thoroughfare"

This is a major road for those travelling east-west, an exit point for traffic from the Eastern Freeway. Most days, traffic is heavy. Peak hours on weekdays, it is a clearway. There is no relief on weekends because of cars parked along the street causing bottle neck.

In a nutshell, stay away unless you don't mind the traffic, noise and car fumes.

Princes Hill

"An oasis close to the action"

A little pocket which tends to be known as a part of Carlton North. It is arguably the best spot in the area. The houses are predominantly Victorian terraces and many have been restored. The streets are nice and wide.

Princes Park is at the doorstep so very convenient for a walk or a jog and kid and pet friendly. For public transport, there is a choice of trams on either Lygon St or Royal Parade. It is less than 10 minute to drive into the CBD yet the area is green and generally quiet. It is not uncommon to hear birds chirping in the morning.

The residents are typically middle class but there would be an over representation of academics partially due to its proximity to Melbourne University.

Overall, I wouldn't think twice given chance to live here.

You've obviously never seen prinny hill.

maddyh2

I'm afraid JoanA1 you obviously have the wrong place or are intentionally posting a false negative review - please see my comment on your review above.
I personally agree 100% with this review written by AprilFlame and can assure anyone a walk around Princes Hill will show you a most beautiful and peaceful suburb.

ingaa

Princes Hill is not safe for families with children, even the drug enforcement units don't travel alone during their many visits here. I don't know what motivation Maddyh2 has for these positive posts - an attempt to increase house prices perhaps? I rent here - so I am not biased.

maddyh2

I rent here too ingaa - see my response above: ingaa I have no interest in property prices in Princes Hill as I don't own or intend to buy a house in Princes Hill. Please don't assume my intentions because you're very wrong. Perhaps it is you - who also RENT here like me - that is trying to lower prices to get cheaper rental? And as far as reporting this TiffanyN and you claiming I'm trying to get opinions removed - you fail to notice that despite these what I consider false reviews being allowed to remain because everyone has the right to express their opinion, TiffanyN's response pretending to be another reviewer WAS REMOVED because that's not allowed. All seems very suspicious to me, if TiffanyN's review was in fact honest why did she feel the need to pretend to be another person to back up her review? Think about it ingaa.... And remember - as homely has stated, we're all allowed to express our opinions, you've questioned my motivation for posting a positive review so now I question your motivation for posting a negative review.

ingaa

Look, anyone reading this - just look at the overall rating of the suburb - 323rd best in Victoria :(
If you want to see for yourself, make sure you come with friends during the daylight hours in a locked car. And if anyone tries to wave you down or try to sell you something, just keep driving (I only had to learn that lesson once).

maddyh2

I'm sorry ingaa but your reasoning is pathetic. Victoria is a HUGE state with well over a thousand suburbs: Princes Hill may be ranked 323rd best on this site -
but most importantly that rating very much affected by what I believe are false negative reviews for whatever reason reviewers like you are doing that - so quite frankly being ranked 323rd out of well over a thousand isn't bad at all, and would be so much higher if people posted honest reviews about it.

And there are reviews for streets not just suburbs, and people often choose that instead - see the reviews for streets in Princes Hill ingaa.
Wilson St where you claim "there are two illegal brothels on Wilson street alone!" - the review gives 7.2 and says:
" "Good street in a great neighbourhood"
Predominantly Victorian terraces. Wide street with a nature strip in the middle. Little through traffic. Five minute stroll to Princes Park and tram stops. Less than half an hour walk to Uni of Melbourne and Carlton shopping strip. Overall, a lovely place to live!
I have lived in the area for almost 10 years. Moved once to the next street. It is quite typical of people we know in the area. They move in and stay in the area either in the same house or moving houses within a few streets.

Hmmmm not sure they'd say that if there are 2 brothels as you claim...

You say "make sure you come with friends during the daylight hours in a locked car"... Seriously your claims are becoming a joke, anyone coming here can see people happily coming and going with no need for locked cars (sorry I can't help but laugh at how you're trying to claim this lovely area is so evil and crime ridden). I trust I've now provided enough information to people interested in the area to question your negative claims and come see for themselves.

When they do then they'll discover the truth. That's all I can do - refute your negative statements and your accusations against me ingaa, provide my own positive review, and I know anyone coming here will see it's a beautiful suburb. Sorry ingaa you can try as much as you like but anyone really wanting to know about Princes Hill will come here and see your claims it's so terrible here are unfounded.

And again - if you don't like it, why don't you move now, and why haven't you moved in the 30 years you say you've lived here?

maddyh2

And please don't try and claim you have to stay here because of grandparents - you can easily find a rental just 5 minutes walk away from that retirement village in Brunswick, which is much cheaper than Princes Hill so you could easily leave this suburb you apparently hate so much if you wanted!

melbs2

Princes Hill is a peaceful, picturesque suburb, not far from Melbourne's CBD. Having lived here for over 30 years, I can vouch for the safety of the suburb, community atmosphere among its residents and plethora of parks and nature strips available. With public transport close by, cafes and shops, there is not much to deter anyone from living here...except for the low vacancy rate. This is a highly sought area with high demand for properties to purchase and rent.

janetk6

Anyone reading this - please be sure to read all the reviews to gain a truer appreciation of the neighbourhood. Princes Hill is not without its old world charm, but you don't have to dig deep to find its cruel and brutal aspects (not just drugs etc, but there is a dog fighting club run at Prinny Hill Sec. after hours). Think carefully before considering moving here.

artm1

People above are arguing about the number of brothels in Princes Hill! This is not normal! Even two or three is too much for such a little suburb - they attract trade from outside of the area.

Simpson Street

"A short stroll to the train"

With Dennis station at the end of the street, it couldn't be more convenient for those who use public transport. It's also a pleasant stroll away from High St and Station St.There are a number of beautiful double fronted houses with long blocks. It's a pity that there are apartment blocks in the mix. Overall, a reasonably good street.

Hobart

"To know it is to love it"

A few years ago, a family friend moved his young family to Hobart from Melbourne. He continued to maintain an office in Melbourne and commutes. I scratched my head... why?!
It wasn't until I have spent sometime in Hobart that I began to understand the attraction. Hobart is a beautiful place. A perfect balance of the old and the new, cafes and restaurants, art precincts and plenty of fresh produce. The distance from the mainland is a blessing in disguise

"Priced pocket"

Situated along Princes Park, it is a lovely spot. The houses face the park, and one can keep entertained watching the dogs and their owners in the leash free area. There could be heavier traffic in the evenings and when there is event in the park.

"Comfortable"

Cottages for workers at the local Northcote quarry line this street. The street like the suburb has made the transition from predominantly migrant working class to an increasingly young educated set. Matured gum trees now line the street adding to its charm.

Walmer St

"Parkland at your door step"

A beautiful tree lined street facing parkland and close to the river. You can even catch a glimpse of the CBD from the street's elevated position. If not for that, one can almost forget that the city is only a 10 minute drive away. The street is lined with many large period homes on big blocks. However, there are several units in the mix.

Orford

"Back to basics"

Orford is a small coastal village at the start of Tasmania's East Coast. It tends to be by-passed by tourists but is a hidden gem. Locals know about it as there are a quite a few beach houses.
When I visited early this year, there was one eatery open at night - the pizza place. There wasn't any shopping mall or fancy entertainment and one shouldn't expect them there. Mobile phone reception is almost non-existence. It is a place to get back in touch with nature. Where there is time to appreciate a good conversation or a book. One could walk a long way from beach to beach without encountering any fellow tourists.
It may be a little too isolated for me to want to live in but for those who do live there, I can appreciate the charm.

McDonald Street

"Street with good potential"

One would only have to look at the next street i.e. Henderson St, to see the pontential in McDonald St. It has an equally good selection of double fronted period homes. The main difference is that there are relatively more that could be improved on. It is a short street and relatively tighly held so it is not frequent to see one available. Wide, quiet street which is great for families.

Stanley Street

"More a lane than a street"

It is a little unusual for the area. It has front yards on one side whilst the other side has backyards i.e. a row of fences. The street is also relatively narrower. A few of the houses back on to a little park which is almost like a private park. There is a playground for toddlers and room for older kids to have a run or ball game. The only plus for the street.

"Pretty street with a pleasant vibe"

One of the prettiest street in Westgarth... Comprising predominantly double blocks Edwardian. A substantial proportion has been done up. The front yards and the nature strip is typically well cared for displaying pride of place. It is a relatively wide, quiet street and family friendly.

Mansfield Street

"Wide street in an upcoming suburb"

Several nicer and wide streets run off High Street towards Victoria Street in Thornbury. Mansfield St is one of them. There are period homes in the mix. Some restored and others with potential. It's only in the past few years that buyers started to appreciate Thornbury and its proximity to Northcote. The gentification around High St, Northcote has certainly helped to dragged it along.

Arnold Street

"Little through traffic"

Arnold Street is one street back from Princes Park. This provides the proximity without having to deal with the through traffic and activities that the park generates.
There is little through traffic relative to other streets in the immediate vicinity. This is because the street is divided by Princes Hill Secondary school in front of which is one-way. Houses on this street are predominantly single fronted Victorian terraces. You will find that many have had renovations done to extend upward.

"Westgarth - Great pocket in Northcote"

When Northcote is mentioned, most would think of the area around High Street.

However, there is a nice pocket in the south east which borders Fairfield and Alphington. The activity centre is Station Street and it is close to the Fairfield boat house, river and parkland.

I think people don't move in Princes Hill because they can't afford to. Or if they can, they move to the gated communities where they will be safer from crime. I get the impression that Princes Hill might have once been a nice place - I mean it has wide streets. But it is squalid and run down now. Certainly not a place to wander at night (from most people anyway). Wilson Street is esp. bad because of the laneway opium den that intersects it.
