MacDougal St

"The Heart of The Village"

I can spend a night here. In fact, I have. I arrived here at around 7:00 PM, quite a while before the comedy show started at the comedy cellar. A couple of friends and I decided to grab a falafel sandwich from mamouns. We were delighted. We continued to stroll down the lovely street as dusk started to come. At 7:30, we grabbed a drink at the MacDougal St. Ale house, they have a good selection. At 8:00, the show started and we left at around 10:00. I love MacDougal St.

Great for

  • Bar scene
  • Lovely restaurants like La Lanterna Cafe and the cheap and cheerful Mamoun's Falafel,
  • Good transport connections

Not great for

  • Crowded
  • Loud all the time

Park Slope

"A Small Piece Of Heaven"

Park Slope is a family neighborhood, near a park.Lots of kids live here, you see lots of kids walking to Prospect Park, or to school. The neighborhood has great subway connections to the city. When I lived here with my family before I moved to Gramercy, it was still a family community. Parents, make sure if you have kids to look in this area. Hire a nanny and take the subway to Long Island City or Manhattan for some nightlife. This is Brooklyn.

Great for

  • Cool bar and off-the-beaten-track music scene
  • Odd Twin, boutique clothing stores
  • The green lung of Prospect Park
  • Lovely old world architecture brownstones and Victorian Mansions that border Prospect Park
  • The Park Slope Food Cooperative

Not great for

  • Lots of strollers
  • A bit on the expensive side
  • Could do with some more subway connections

Gramercy Park

"Only the Best"

Ive lived in New York for a total of 8 years. 4 Years at NYU, two years in Brooklyn Heights, and 2 years and counting in Gramercy. Gramercy has a private park, you need to be a resident OR stay at the Gramercy Park Hotel to get in. This reminds me of my hometown, Lockport IL, except theres a lot more people than 24,000. The people here are friendly, and if you love nightlife, the East Village is very close.

Great for

  • Safe and Sound
  • Close to East Village for nightlife
  • Beautiful
  • Tons of history
  • Garmercy Park
  • Excellent restaurants

Not great for

  • Expensive

Lockport

"My Hometown"

Lockport. This brings back lots of memories. The hidden gem of Northern Illinois. Small city, under 25,000 people, but has great parks, like the new Lincoln Landing. Its Downtown area is nice, very historic. In Downtown Lockport youll usually find 600/month 1br apartments, with no credit checks. The wine and dining scene here is great, it also has some pretty well known stores like Walmart and Target. The grocery shopping? Farrell Road is the best place. Lockport has a Walmart, Jewel Osco, and the new Berkot's. It has a Sonic-Drive In also. The schools here sre amazing. I went in 33-C, and it was a.very wealthy school. It's also VERY close to Chicago. Enjoy it. I know you will.

Great for

  • Safe
  • Everything ;)

Not great for

  • Gets deserted at night

Harlem

"The Part Of New York that will always be an Individual."

Harlem. One of the hippest areas in New York. Music floats the streets as you shop and dine and enjoy all the nightlife. In 2005 Harlem had about 75 murders. In 2010 the murder rate dropped all the way to 39. Which means in 2012 it should be about 30 murders, and since were 3/4 into the year, there are still about 7 murders to be commited. Safe during the day, fairly sketchy at night. But, this neighborhood is a must see for nightlife, not to mention the apartment rates. 900$-1500$ for a one bedroom? Amazing!

Great for

  • Affordable rents
  • Excellent restaurants
  • Rich cultural traditions
  • Close to major transport

Not great for

  • Crime rates
  • Dirty
  • Far from downtown

East Village

"Funkytown"

The East Village.... ive only been there during the day, but ive heard during the night its the best place in town. I went there this May to meet up with a friend who lives above Tompkins Square Park on Avenue B. He took me out to see all the people and it was one of the awesomest things ive ever seen. The area is well populated with families, so its a safe neighborhood, compared what it used to be. Just dont wander east of Avenue C at night. Its one of the most affordable areas in Manhattan so if you're on a budget make sure to check here. Welcome to the neighborhood. Cant wait to see what its like at night!

Great for

  • Great nightlife
  • Legendary downtown music and theater venues
  • Great bohemian legacy
  • Cheap, great restaurants
  • Center of hip culture

Not great for

  • Still a little dangerous east of Avenue C at night
  • Loud bar scene
  • Alphabet city is far from transport
  • Crowded and busy especially around St Mark's Square
  • Noisy
