Watkin St

"Leafy enclave just a stone's throw from the action"

Lovely, leafy Victorian street flanked by gracious terraces, with all the King St eateries around the corner and Erskineville village an easy shaded 10min walk away. Sometimes difficult parking aside, if you want to ignore the King St crowds, it's easy to -- the streets in the other direction are leafy and quiet and suffused with Victorian-Edwardian charm. Choice of great pubs, restaurants, three gyms (Fitness First near the station, Newtown Gym on King St and the Sydney Uni sports centre a 10min walk away), two swimming pools nearby (Uni sports centre and Victoria Park) and with the choice of not one but four train stations all within walking distance (Newtown, Macdonaldtown, Erskineville and Redfern).
You can walk 5mins down King St to the Dendy cinema, or for blockbusters the Hoyts at the Broadway Centre is also walkable (or 5mins on bus).
Parking can be a bother but many houses have their own car spaces and resident permits are available. The City of Sydney rangers are often out in force which is good. Unfortunately street parking for any extended period will result in tell-tale bumper scratches, courtesy of drivers who seem to think it's ok to keep inching backwards or forwards until they meet physical resistance.
Overall, the location is really unbeatable. I used to have a 6 minute trip to work (near Central) but now I cycle, which takes 15 mins or less. Getting to and from the city is a doddle but there are also direct buses to the eastern suburbs beaches too. What a great place to live.

Reiby St

"Picturesque pocket close to amenities"

Long, leafy, quiet street whose trees soak up the noise from Enmore Road so you wouldn't know it's there unless you're within 20 metres of it. Elegant though sometimes small Victorian and Federation houses, great neighbourly atmosphere. Good range of pubs and eateries on Enmore Road, with buses on the doorstep and Newtown Station and shops 5mins up the road. If you like the quiet life, main drawback is Enmore Theatre around the corner -- parking impossible on show nights and crowds returning to their cars afterwards can be noisy. Some aircraft noise but only smaller jets so not a big problem -- large planes eg 747s are aligned with the longer runway to the west, mostly out of earshot.
