Reviews of Victoria St, Richmond

"Great food ... but no street where you want to live."

Noisy street ... Tram lines are not separated from the cars (so you are not faster when you use public transport).. Only one lane as there is too much parking (not sure why there is aprking allowed in such a busy street). 60 speed limit compared to 40 on bridge road ... no idea why as there are also a lot of people on the street. Summary: no place where yiou want to live ...

But great restaurants when you like authentic asian food ...

"Best Vietnamese Food"

Victoria Street has the best and most prolific range of Vietnamese restaurants, heading out of the city on the far side of Punt Road there is plenty of places to eat along a stretch of about two or three streets/blocks. It's hard to find parking and can be a bit of a dingy area after the restaurants are closed but during the day and early evening this is the best place for hungry people. My three favorite places in order - Pacific House, Two Two's and Than Phong. Pacific House is the best by far, only takes cash though. All the restaurants along here are quick service/turn around places so when visiting the plan should be to eat and leave, there also isn't much elbow room so be willing to sometimes get squashed in with a group of people you don't know.

There are some nice little asian grocery stores and you can pick up fresh vegetables and asian ingredients at these places.

"Nice restaurants in the west, and the Yarra in the east; otherwise bleak"

The restaurants along the western half of Victoria Street are interesting and great for Asian eating, and there's a couple of decent western pubs and cafes too. At the eastern end the street crosses the Yarra, allowing for nice cycling around the yarra bend park.

Parts of Victoria street seem seedy; I've seen more than a few homeless drunks either asleep on benches or being moved on.

However aside from that, the area is rather bleak; there are no real shops of note, and the Victoria Gardens shopping centre is as bland and devoid of interest as a shopping centre can be.

Watch out for the lack of inexpensive car parking in the area too - and traffic is only going to get worse as several new corporate buildings are being built in the area.

Very accurate review Wintermute -- especially about Victoria Gardens. I'm in the suburb nearly every day and have to visit VG a lot .. and it's definately bland :(

There's also some new development along the eastern side of the street, near the (famous Richmond icon) "Skipping Girl" .... so i'll be keeping a keen eye on that!

"Nice mix of East meets West"

Victoria street is infamous for it's 'hawker style' Vietnamese restaurants. They range from abysmal to kick-ass-delicious. It could be hit-n-miss, but you can be pretty safe with the busier ones.

With a major tram line cutting straight through the middle of the street - linking the city to the wealthy eastern suburbs - traffic can be a nightmare.

This street is to eat and relax and catch up with friends or work colleagues. It's not a place to live/sleep IMO.

"Fantastic place to dine, walk and see cooked headless chickens in windows!"

This is a great street get your favourite (and cheap) vietnamese, chinese or any asian cuisine you like! I wouldn't want to live on Victoria Street, but if you want food at very cheap prices, and great food as well, then look no further.

Traffic is hell at peak hour times, and it's best to go the back streets if you want to avoid. The street doesn't smell the best either, but most of the shops are open air, and at the very least it's a great cultural experience.

Overall, I recommend visiting Victoria Street for dinner with partner, or the family!!

"Have worked on this street for 6 years"

While I haven't actually lived on Victoria St I've been around here quite a while. We first moved offices here in 2001 before the big Victoria Gardens shopping center was built and being at the far end (on the Yarra) everything was a long walk away. Now with Vic Gardens around there's plenty more food and shops to choose from but still lacking in choice when it comes to sit-down places. That's when you have to head down the street to the many asian restaurants or the pubs or the other various places around.

Being an inner-city suburb it has the usual traffic problems, crime and run-down buildings but the Yarra River hooks around through it giving you a place to escape to if you need to get away. The 109 tram goes up and down Victoria St (you can catch it on Collins St in the city) but train stations are a 10+ minute walk away.
