Reviews of Altona Meadows, VIC

"Community Feel"

I have lived in Altona Meadows for 16 years now and it certainly has changed throughout the years. It has a community feel about it. We have some wonderful neighbours of different ages in our street all of which we have a wonderful connection with. We have a local shopping centre that has everything we need and some great schools in the surrounding areas. We do lack Secondary Schools in the area but if choosing a Catholic school MSJ, Emmanuel and St Paul's College are great schools that are all reasonably priced considering how much Catholic schools are in other suburbs around Melbourne. The great thing about Altona Meadows is that the prices of housing is not as expensive as Altona and only a 5 minute drive to the local Altona Beach and Pier Street restaurants. There are some wonderful parks around the area and a great skate park for children as well as the big basketball and baseball stadium. If you are into cycling there are some great paths you can take and some wonderful scenic routes through the area and the surrounds. We are only 25 minutes to the CBD by car. There are a few train station options such as Laverton, Westona, Altona and Seaholme all with great parking.

"THE HIDDEN TREASURE IN THE SOUTH WEST"

Altona Meadows is the hidden treasure in the south west and still affordable.

About minutes drive /could bike ride to the Altona Beach which is now million dollar suburb.
Very close to Cheetham wetlands.
Close to the city. It will be super fast after completing the West Gate Tunnel Project which is currently under construction.
Proximity to Train station and free ways for easy navigation.
Great schools and sporting facilities around.
Beautiful parks around - 100 Steps of Federation is amazing located in Truganina Park.
Local shopping center and medical center.
Safe and family friendly.

"The best of all worlds"

We bought here in 2019 and I remain blown away that it remains the secret that it is. Perfect neighbourhood and literally had everything you could ask for. Near shops, freeway, beach, city, schools, hospitals etc. We're honestly stoked we got in and bought here when we did.

"Amazing Altona Meadows - We love it!"

We recently bought in Altona Meadows and absolutely love it here! So great to be only a few minutes from the beach, shops, cafes, schools, train and all that the amazing west has to offer.

We love being walking distance from the train station (zone 1 and express baby!) and so close to the freeway for commuting to cbd and then on the weekends we can easily pop down to Altona and Williamstown for beach / cafe life or head further south west to the surf coast in under an hour. This really is the best of all worlds!

Also, pretty close to both Melbourne airports which suits us as we love to travel.

Local shops great and easy for groceries, take out, pharmacy etc but you have heaps of options with Point Cook/ Hoppers / Werribee Plaza also close by. DH loves his bike and is also v. happy with proximity to Skeleton Creek and Hobsons Bay Coastal trails. Plenty of families use these paths for walking / cycling as it is safe option for kids and there are a few nice playground stopovers en route.

Neighbourhood feels super safe to me (mix of older folk, young families and professionals) and as first home buyers we feel super lucky to have bought a solid, freestanding home with a nice backyard this close to CBD commute, natural parkland and beach.

Good luck and happy house-hunting!

"The secret's out..."

Where else can you buy your own Australian dream:

5 minutes drive or a short bike ride to the beach (and all of Altona's hip eateries and family friendly parklands)
25km from the city (accessible by close freeway entrances and a zone 1 express train)
Near beautiful wetlands and parklands where you can safely ride your bike with your family all the way through to Altona Beach
In a gentrifying area that is increasingly attracting young professionals and families who want a safe, happy neighbourhood with great schools
And all for under 700k for a decent block of land and solid 3 bedroom home with play-space for the kids.

We have lived in the area for over 10 years now and every time we hang out at Altona or go for a bike ride along the Altona Bay wetlands or walk to the nearby train station, I am blown away that the area is still so affordable.

Altona Meadows is still as affordable as it is, due to the heavy development in surrounding areas. Only in recent years, buyers (and renters) are realising that the sparkling new kitchen benchtops in their McMansions (or mini McMansions) don't compensate for a daily drive down Point Cook Road (can take over an hour weekdays and weekends) or overcrowded schools. And as this plays out, Altona Meadows house sale and rental prices are gradually going up, with still significant room for capital growth.

In Altona Meadows

Queen of Peace (affordable private Catholic school) and Altona Green (which has its own pizza oven, chickens and a huge, magical play area for a relatively small collection of kids) offer amazing primary school options.

Central Square has recently been modernised and is a great place with bulk-billing doctors, places to eat out, a wonderful fruit and veg shop, Coles, Aldi, Big W and a lovely modern library.

While much of Australia is in a downturn, Altona Meadows still offers great growth potential. 5 minutes to the beach, close to the CBD and easily under the million (for now). The price growth has been capped somewhat by nearby developments but as the infrastructure deficits of Point Cook and surrounds become blatant, first home buyers who are priced out of Williamstown and smart enough to see the capital growth possibilities are heading this way...

Good luck to the sneaky reviewer trying to curb price growth so they can buy into the neighbourhood, but I wanted to share the love because we are so happy here. :-)

Rentals in Altona Meadows

"Average Suburb"

I currently rent in Altona Meadows and this has been my experience so far.
Central Square Shopping Centre:
- The Coles sells poor quality fruit on a regular basis, compared to the Coles in Point Cook and Coles in Werribee Plaza.
- The Hairdresser (Vanity Hair and Beauty) My Mother walked in with her natural brown hair and asked for blonde highlights, they gave her bright orange highlights, fried her hair and then overcharged her and refused to fix it.
- The Chemist is small and does not stock my Epilepsy medication, so I drive to Chemist Warehouse in Hoppers Crossing to get it.
Doctors (Altona Super Clinic)
- Some of the Doctors are good, but others struggle to speak English, and do not communicate properly.
Crime:
- I recently started decorating for Christmas and have already had items stolen by teenage boys.
- There are a couple of people who constantly do burnouts in the street.
I don't see why people are calling Altona Meadows a hidden gem/the next million dollar suburb, but I'm guessing it's because they bought here and now want their house to go up in value.

"Bayside Gem"

Altona Meadows and the entire south west is under valued. It is going to be the jewel of the west once they suburbs above all join to Melton. People will always pay more to live here so with the great established tree lined streets, awesome demographic, quality schools, location to the beach people, soooo close and value value value in property prices. Move to Altona Meadows, $1M prices are coming very very soon.

"Hidden gem of the Western Suburbs"

We've just bought and moved into Altona Meadows. We did consider other suburbs but after driving plenty of times (night and day) and doing lots of our own research, Altona Meadows hit the spot!

Altona Meadows has everything! Safe, close to shops, medical centre, great primary schools and community (new renovated library and Central square shopping centre). Close to Altona beach and playground for our kids and only 5 mins drive.

Close to highway. Only 17km (20mins) drive to the city!! We reckon that it is much better than any of the Western suburbs! Hidden gem! I agree with the previous comment. Watch this suburb, it is slowly going up and will hit $1million soon. I have seen a few listing that is going up that high!! Do your research!

"Melbourne's best kept secret- shhhh"

Altona Meadows is close to the beach and the Reserve whilst having multiple access points onto the M1. It is such a great location and is totally undervalued in my opinion, especially when compared to its close neighbors Altona and Point Cook .This suburb is going to take off....watch this space!!

Its pretty quiet and i have never felt unsafe whilst walking around the neighborhood. There are many great schools around, sporting facilities and not to mention an easy walk to the train station.

Pretty happy with my choice to move here and with the new Westgate Tunnel project taking off traffic into the city will be a breeze, wuhoo!

"Beautiful Bayside"

Hidden hideaway is an understatement when it comes to Altona Meadows. People don't realize this suburb is a little bayside beauty. If it was on the eastern side of Port Phillip Bay the house prices would be averaging over $1M. Perfect, convenient and quick access to the sandy Altona Beach (5 min by car) and great for schools, local simple shopping and overall peace and quiet. Safe and family friendly. Get in quick people, before the $1M prices arrive. :-)

"Western gem ready for a new lease of life"

We're first home buyers (in our 30s) and bought in Altona Meadows recently. We both work in the city and are very happy with our decision. It's our first house and we could afford a free standing house here with a big garden which is saying something these days. Laverton train station is just a walk up the road, which feels safe and busy and gets us to the city in 30 minutes. There are two platforms heading to the city the express and the regular train but you're guaranteed a seat on that one. There is access to the freeway nearby too. Driving to the cirty takes 20 minutes on a good run, 40 minutes rush hour. We deliberately moved to Altona Meadows instead of Point Cook to avoid the horrendous traffic situation there, and it has paid off. Point cook is only 5 km up the road but would have added an extra 30 minutes to our commute.

5 minutes drive down the road we have the swimable beach (can't wait for summer!) and heaps of coastal parkland and well maintained bike trails.
There average shops and family restaurants (fish & chips, bakeries, pizza, etc). But we get the train to Yarraville or Newport for a night out. It's a 1 hour drive to the surf coast which means a weekend morning surf is easy.

I agree with someone elses comment here that with a bit of targeted investment from the council (more streetlights, spruce-up some of the inland trails and parklands, modernise central square shopping centre) could make a big improvement.

I see hoons mentioned here but we haven't experienced this at all. Maybe because we're not on a main road.

I think you've hit the nail on the head. In addition, there are still plenty of opportunities to build as there are still many vacant lots around. Right now is a great time to buy (Sept 2012)

"A great place to raise a family"

My wife and I moved to Altona Meadows in May 2011 and haven't looked back ever since. Initially we thought about moving to Point Cook/Sanctuary Lakes but when we realised how small the blocks were and what they were selling for, we immediately changed our interest to Altona Meadows. In less than 2 months we found our dream home, newly renovated an sitting on almost 800 square metres in a quite court and selling for almost half the price of homes in surrounding suburbs. Altona Meadows has the peace and quite you would typically find only in a small country town and still less than 20km to the city. The public transport, medical and sporting facilties are second to none. A few people have mentioned traffic issues but we have found traffic to be quite good even during peak hour. A great place to live and raise a family and we don't see ourselves moving for a very very long time if ever at all.

Great for

  • Peace and Quite

"First resident in the whole of Altona Meadows."

I believe it or not AM the first resident in Altona Meadows.

I have lived in the same house since 1978 and still staying.

It is a great place and 2 kilometres from Altona Beach.

I have everything I need at my door step so to speak.

If you want a clean, family, social suburb, then look no further than Altona Meadows.
It takes me 19 minutes to get to the GPO in Bourke Street on a normal day. Its fabulous!!!!

"A developing suburb - needing council support"

Altona Meadows seems to have come a long way over the past 10-15 years. It's quiet and clean. People are very working class, with a few issues such as hoons and people leaving shopping trolleys on streets. Council is letting this suburb with huge potential down. The shopping centre is tacky compared with the newer development in point cook, with dirty bathrooms and dated below average stores. Council is also doing nothing to keep residents new skeleton creek from doing what they like in the park way, building retaining walls, compost bins, fenced off areas, and non native planting in public land. Few playgrounds for children, many without shade. If council ever get their act together they could do something quite spectacular with the seaside suburb and parkland near the creek and bay considering what the suburb will someday become. Investment, education and nurturing local knowledge of indigenous planting, particularly near the creek is essential.

The location, land and house sizes are fantastic. Potential is fantastic but will need some real help from Council to create a wonderful suburb with wonderful indigenous park areas and educate and support locals. Should have a groovier shopping centre and well thought out and protected park areas. Wonderful potential as a natural haven with well used sporting and recreation facilities. Council needs to think seriously about the future of the suburb and provisions for cafes and a few restaurants. The dodgy shopping centre just won't cut it.

  • Proximity to water
  • House and land size
  • Proximity to city

Not great for

  • Poorly developed and guided by council

Very true about those hoons. I lived in Altona Meadows but I'm in the UK now and drivers around Victoria especially Altona Meadows are terrible. There's some real bullies on the road in that area.

"Nice big blocks"

I have a Roof Restoration company and often quote and work in Altona Meadows.
The roofs in this area are starting to need some attention as the houses are getting on to the ten year old mark.
I like altona Meadows for the block and street sizes. Also shopping is not too far away, and the bay beach only a short drive away.

The only draw back for me would be the traffic at times.

Cheers,

Phil

"Fantastic Value for Money !!!!!!!"

Great Suburb,
Moved here 2 years ago , narrowed down to here after comparing all the suburbs for the value proposition, on criteria like , safety , shopping centers, Freeway , and public transport distance from city , schools, etc etc

Meadows wins big time on all these counts, being in Zone 1 with decent public transport, excellent freeway access from both sides. a healthy sized shopping center , good schools and nearby medical facilities in Werribee Mercy and Super Clinics.

We moved in here last year and have never regretted the decision. Best place for new starters and for people who want the best value the money can buy.

"Great Place to Live"

Altona Meadows and the whole of the Municipality has a huge sporting culture. The Meadows itself is home to a modern 8 court basketball/netball stadium which caters for Domestic, Representastive and BIG V and State Basketball & Netball games and tournaments. Set on acres of parkland the stadium is easily accessible and has an additional 4 outdoor netball courts. The completeion of an excellent modern extension to the stadium in 2009 added extra indoor basketball and netball courts mand a showcourt complete with quality grandstand, large entertaining/multipurpose room, additioonal change rooms for top league games, child care facilities, etc. A little league training comp. for 5 years plus is also a strongly supported weekly program and much loved by the kids to learn basketball skills.
At the other extreme there is an excellent Bowls club which the local council has recently installed the latest state of the art synthetic turf too, ensuring that the club can host top pennant games all year round. Public tennis courts, the State Softball/Baseball stadium a BMX track ,skate park, soccer, football ovals & cricket pitches, cycling & walking tracks are also available in the suburb within walking distance of one another. Night & Day Hockey field to cater for State games is in Altona itself - 10 minutes away. Great parks, several schools, community centres, etc. all available. Add beaches and it is a Great Place to live and entertain for singles, retirees, young professionals and families alike!

"Middle class suburb near Melbourne"

Traditionally a working class suburb, new housing developments are moving Altona Meadows nearer to a middle class area home to over 18,000 people. Based almost 20km from Melbourne’s CBD, this well populated area sits between Laverton, Altona, Seabrook, Port Phillip and Point Cook. It is best suited to families and currently attracts an average of $315,000 per property sold. Altona Meadows features a large wetlands park which is popular among birdwatchers and those who enjoy walking, and plays host to a primary school.
