Moving to Melbourne

I will be moving to Melbourne very soon, and since I have never been there or will not have the time to check out the suburbs. I was just wondering what would be the best suburbs to live in for a young professional couple.... Thanks

It depends where you would be working. Avoiding a long commute is something many people would like to do! Also on what you like to do socially. Do you want to be near the ocean? Near the airport? Near the city centre? Melbourne is a big city.

Probably close to the city centre (Right now I live roughly 3.5 km from the Brisbane CBD)

I would recommend either of the following:

St Kilda
Port Melbourne
Richmond

I love all those suburbs, and you can't really go wrong in any of them. Brian raises a good point though, there are so many variables, so if you give us a little more info regarding lifestyle etc we could help you out some more.

LOL okay sorry - I would prefer closer to the city - not the ocean, as I am not a fan of water. I am currently living in Teneriffe in Brisbane, which is filled with cafes, bars and day spas, and is right on the river and yet close but not too close to Brisbane CBD.

Socially we are more coffee drinkers than anything, preferring to spend our time in a cafe or when we are with friends from overseas, at a nice bar.

I have heard Kensington is somewhat like Teneriffe but I have heard also by other people to stay away from there.

Okay now just starting to grasp the concept that Melbourne is much bigger than Brisbane.

And somewhere that has decent public transport as neither of us actually drive...

Somewhere inner city then - Richmond (east of the city) as AJ says is great, as is Brunswick (north of the city) or the inner western suburbs of Footscray, Yarraville etc would be a good option with public transport close by.

Hi MiwSher,

St Kilda, Richmond or South Yarra would be PERFECT for your lifestyle, perhaps even Carlton\Fitzroy area. All have great public transport, and have great cafe/coffee drinking cultures.

All the inner city suburbs have tram lines in and out of the city, so that would be a very small concern.

Would consider yourself a bit of a hippie? While that may seem like a bit of an odd question, there are certainly areas which have more of a grungy/hippy style to them.

:) well I would consider South Yarra to be a great suburb for you.

HOWEVER all of the suburbs mentioned are fantastic. Finding the ideal suburb can be a lot of trial and error. I suggest checking out some reviews on the site of the suburbs we have mentioned (just do a search at the top of the page). Perhaps even comment on peoples reviews on those suburbs and get the first hand info from people actually living there.

Anything else we can help you with, feel free to ask away!!

I'm familiar with the Northern side of the city. Melbourne is the cafe capital so not hard to find interesting places with good coffee.

Carlton is close enough to walk into the city. However, if you are happy to tram a little, Carlton North is quiet despite being another 10-15 minutes up the road from the CBD. On week days, trams are 5-10 minutes apart typically so it is very convenient. There is parkland nearby, and good cafes and restaurants within walking distance.

The next band up is Brunswick. A little more grungy but becoming increasingly gentrified. Great mix of cafes and restaurants along Lygon Street and Sydney Road. Large variety of cuisines from fantastic pizza places to Indian and Middle Eastern.

Agree with AJ, you'll need to drop by, check the vibe and crowd out yourself. You may feel some area to be a little too snooty, edgy or busy for your liking whilst others could have the right balance.

How much time are you willing to spend commuting?

Brunswick is gentrifying fast - get in while you can afford it!
