"Best city in Gippsland to live"

I have a rental property in West Bairnsdale which I lved in for a while whilst renovating it. Admittedly I was only there for a few weeks but what a pretty and clean city.
Never had a problem with anyone and everybody was friendly and helpful if I needed anything.
My honest opinion is that the housing is way undervalued compared to Traralgon or anything in the Valley but if you want to retire here or just want an affordable house - go for it !
The rental return on the house i purchased is great - $250 rent return on a $220`000 house is brilliant but capital growth is stagnant. My advice would be to buy something whilst the housing is affordable and sit on it for 10 years - it has to be better than stocks and shares....
I did my research on lots of towns/cities in regional Victoria over a twelve month period and Bairnsdale came up trumps !

Great for

  • Cleanest city in Gippsland
  • Great shopping centre
  • Very relaxed and laid back
  • Beach is only 15 min drive away

Not great for

  • Capital growth is slow.
  • Traffic on the Princes Highway can get very busy

I grew up in Bairnsdale and lived there til 18, moved out and lived in Melbourne, Im now 24 and thinking of moving back, probably avoid really east Bairnsdale around Lucknow street, Mceacharn street, and Mary street along the river are nice, just do a drive by and you can tell which areas arent to nice!

I bought in nearby paynesville. Bairnsdale has almost everything you need. Be careful of flood prone areas when buying as there are some. Other than that the place is great and safe. But very l ight on the restaurant and entertainment side of things. If I wanted that though I would buy in a city. That said commercial rentals are cheap so the place is ripe to open one.
I'm yet to find a very good cake shop for birthday cakes etc (but someone here will hopefully tell me I am wrong). So far I like living 15mins out of Bairnsdale in paynesville very much.

"A commercial hub in the country, with a strong sense of community"

Bairnsdale is located on the Princes Highway about 280 kilometres from Melbourne.

Sadly Bairnsdale is in the heart of the region that was devastated by bushfires earlier this year, and so the community is rebuilding itself and many of the buildings in the surrounding region, and the vegetation is growing again.

The sense of community here is very strong. Its population is close to 12,000, and the town is home to a number of families, and offers a number of facilities, with many schools and recreational activities.

Bairnsdale is a commercial hub, providing many services to the Gippsland region.
