"The History of Benowa"

Benowa boasts one of the oldest Gold Coast town names, dating back to the 1850’s. The name evolved from the Aboriginal word ‘Boomow” (the bloodwood tree) in 1866 one square mile of land was granted to Robert Muir, which eventually became the Benowa Sugar plantation. The location was known as Nerang Creek, now the section of the Nerang river running along Cabana Blvd and Sir Bruce Small Boulevard.

1866 Marked the opening of the post office and saw the first sale of land within the Benowa township. The Queensland Gazetteer in 1876 describes Benowa as having three sugar mills, a hotel, a racecourse, a courthouse , a store, and a blacksmith.

Today Benowa's services include the Benowa Gardens Shopping Centre, Pindara Private Hospital, the Royal Pines Resort Golf Course and three schools (public and private). It is also is also the home of the Gold Coast City's Regional Botanic Gardens.

Cabana Blvd and Sir Bruce Small Boulevards are now in Benowa Waters, the “vanity” suburb of Benowa. All homes south of Ashmore Road, are regarded as being part of Benowa Waters.
Today you would pay between $1.4 million to $4 million to buy a home situated on the main river. To buy a home that is not on the water you would expect to pay upwards of $900,000 and potentially up to $1.3 million.

"Close to everything - great for families!"

Benowa is a thriving suburb of the Gold Coast - it has a mix of residences, parkland and amenities available. There are a number of great schools - Benowa Primary, Benowa High, St Kevin's Primary school, the daycare centers are also popular with families. Benowa is also home to the beautiful Regional Botanic Gardens (Rosser Park) - featuring a cafe, boardwalks & a great children's playground. Benowa is also in the Royal Pines precinct, which attracts golfers from all over the world.
Such a great central suburb, but has a real suburban feel to it!

"Leafy suburb but central to everything!"

Benowa is a very central suburb to all the Gold Coast has to offer, yet it has a peaceful ambience due to the parks and landscaped streets. Having lived in the suburb for twenty three years it is hard to imagine living anywhere else in terms of convenience. Geographically it is surrounded by Ashmore, Southport, Sorrento, Bundall, Carrara and Emerald Lakes suburbs, and as such is conveniently located to restaurants, sporting and recreation facilities in those areas, including Metricon Stadium. The Botanic Gardens located in Benowa provide beautiful parklands, lakes and gardens for family gatherings and dog walkers alike. It is only 10 minutes to the beach at Surfers or the Broadwater Parklands at Southport. Numerous shopping centres, including Benowa Gardens and the newly opened Benowa Village are all easily accessible. The Royal Pines golf course, Gold Coast Turf Club, Spotlight Theatre, Gold Coast Arts Centre and Farmers' Markets ensure something for everyone. A 24 hour gym and a women's gym are also available and conveniently located. Medical, Dental and Specialist facilities are all easily accessible, including Pindara Hospital conveniently located centrally in the suburb. There are four schools in the area and plenty of Childcare Centres, making the suburb very attractive to families with school aged children. However, the Suburb is great for all ages. Traffic on the main roads can be congested at certain times throughout the day but this is due mainly to the upgrading of the main roads which will soon be completed.

  • Botanic Gardens
  • Dog friendly parks
  • Convenience
  • Peace
  • Schools
  • A great 24 hour gym walking distance away

"Benowa Waters - Gold Coast's premium family living area"

Benowa Waters is a particularly special part of the world to live - waterfront homes, botanical gardens a walk or bike ride away, good sized blocks, excellent shopping and schools and now has a great gym in the local shops. As for community spirit and culture - you are walking distance to the Spotlight Theatrical Theatre Company - a fabulous little community theatre that would be more expected in inner city Melbourne than on the Gold Coast, and 5 minutes drive to beautiful beach and Northcliffe Surf Club (winner of Qld title for nippers).
It is more expensive than other areas but for good reason - the perfect family pocket on the Gold Coast.

"A convenient, posh neighbourhood"

I lived in Benowa for over 5 years before moving to another suburb when the landlord wanted to sell the house. It's a very convenient and nice neighbourhood. There are many affluent pockets, especially those near waterfront. It's close to many schools, shops, a huge botanical park, and offices. Only a few minutes drive to the train station.

"Benowa"

The prominent location in the Benowa Gardens Shopping Centre is central to an area of some 20,000 residents covering Benowa, Benowa Waters, Sorrento, Isle of Capri, Bundall, Southern Southport, Parkwood, Ashmore, Molendinar, Crestwood Heights, Carrara and Broadbeach Waters. The shopping centre where our office is located sees over 100,000 visitors monthly.

The variety of property throughout this area is extensive ranging from dry blocks, duplexes and townhouses to waterfront properties on either lake, canal or Nerang (main) River frontages. The extensive waterways throughout the region ensure a pleasant lifestyle particularly for boating and or fishing enthusiasts.

The golden beaches from Surfers Paradise to Broadbeach are easy travelling being around 10 minutes by car.

The extensive number of parks including the Gold Coast City Botanical Gardens gives the area a definite green feel and any day can experience people out and about enjoying the facilities.

Schools are also numerous in the area including The Southport School (TSS), St Hildas, Trinity Lutheran College, Emmanuel College, Surfers Paradise State Primary, St Kevin's Catholic Primary, Benowa Primary and High Schools, Ashmore State and numerous child care facilities.

Shopping is well catered for being minutes to Pacific Fair, Harbourtown, Australia Fair, Southport Park, Ashmore Plaza, Ashmore City, Isle of Capri and of course the Benowa Gardens Shopping Centre.

Transport is functional through the area with an extensive network of buses and easy access to the rail. The M1 highway is easily accessible allowing easy commuting either North to Brisbane or South to Coolangatta where airports are located.

The area also has easy access to hospitals housing Pindara Private, Allamanda Private and the Gold Coast Hospital.

Throughout the area there are many restaurants, cafes, hotels and eateries again contributing to a wonderful lifestyle on offer.

Other well known landmarks are the Royal Pines Resort; the home of the Gold Coast Bulletin, Carrara Stadium, the Gold Coast Turf Club and The Gold Coast City Council chambers.

"Perfect Location"

We've lived in Benowa Waters for a year now but I grew up next door in Ashmore so I know it well. Its a wonderful place for a family, everyone is extremely friendly and look out for each other, our children play in the streets and the area is immaculately manicured. Its close to the botanical gardens, shops, schools, the beach and hospitals and its a 7min drive to the train station. There's no through traffic and theres only one way in and out so its effectively an island. For mine Benowa and Sorrento are the only reasonably affordable waterfront suburbs north of the Nerang River (meaning easy access to both Southport and Surfers Paradise) and I dont expect that they'll be affordable for very long. If we were to ever move it would be to Sorrento but there's not a lot between the two.

Hi Mikka, do you still have the same feeling about the suburb safe and quiet? Ill be moving with my family in a couple of months and right now Im not confident with any suburb. My husband and old son would love to live near the beach, but for me a quieter neighbourhood is the most. Thanks

Mikka

All is still good here. Benowa Waters gets better every year. I cant see us moving any time soon and weve been here for 10years. There are very few houses for sale here which gives you a good indication that those that are here are very happy with the suburb.

I have lived in Benowa for 2.1/2 years and absolutely love it. I currently rent in the area and am wanting to buy as I believe there are still some older homes which can ben renovated to turn a tidy profit.
