Reviews of Berridale, NSW

"Very family friendly"

A great community, very welcoming and very supportive.
Close to towns with options for whatever you may want (Cooma - Aldi, movies, plenty of shops and schools - Jindy - Snow, lake, better food than Cooma, school options) but far enough away from the problems both these towns have.

Looking for a home in Berridale?

"Fine for families -"

Berridale is a great place for families. For a tiny rural town it has great facilities for kids including a small but good primary school, a mobile preschool, a childcare centre and after school care and a playgroup. Berridale is also equiped with a doctors surgery (conveniently located next to the skate park - coincidence? maybe?).

School bus services go to both Jindabyne and Cooma so not only do you have a local primary school but also access to a Grammar School, a Christian School, a Catholic School and Public High Schools in both Jindabyne or Cooma. There is also a TAFE located in Cooma.

As for facilities, the local swimming pool is the place to be in summer with solar heated water (it can be chilly even in summer) or the skate park for the rest of the year. There are also parks and designated dog walking areas to enjoy. The highlight as far as facilities, has to be the snowfields. It doesn't matter where you ski or board, just as long as you do... All the schools in the region offer ski/board as a part of the school ciriculum - Jindabyne Central School makes a day of it every Friday in Winter - the kids get on the bus with skis and ski gear and go straight to the snow for the day. No school on Fridays!!!

Now I won't lie, the nightlife is a killer - there is not much of that at all. There is a Country Club and a Pub and that's about it. Luckily, family get togethers are frequent and fun, so finding like minded people is really important so that you are not sat at home.

I love living here. Life is like it was when I was a kid (I'm 35 now). My kids ride their bikes to friends houses, walk to and from school, they enjoy the freedom that country life offers them without the complications of city life - kids can be kids.

Now for the hard bit... It hasn't all been smooth sailing. Finding permanent employment here is almost impossible. Most of the work is seasonal - snow industry, hospitality etc. In saying that, cost of living is less. Rent is cheap and buying a house is still affordable - if you can get a job that is...

Great for

  • Safe
  • Cheap housing
  • Close to the snow

Not great for

  • Isolated from city
  • Employment is tight
  • Gets very cold

"Conveniently located country town"

Quiet country town and very affordable real estate. Berridale offers a peaceful summer lifestyle and a great winter opportunity with the increase in people coming down to ski. Berridale is situated 30 mins from Cooma, 15 from Jindabyne and under an hour to NSW ski fields.

Berridale offers families cheaper winter accommodation and does not have the noise associated with Jindabyne over the winter period. There is a pub with restaurant, club with a kebab shop beside, winery that does lunch and meals in winter and ski hire available.

Perfect for families with children, very safe and clean and offers a local primary school and childcare. Also 3, yes 3 doctors in town with a medical practice and chemist.

Other features are old aged hostel, ski hire, framing business, chemist, local real estate, petrol station and 3 cafes to choose from. Population around 1000, very affordable real estate and several homes been built.

"Small country town"

Berridale is small little town roughly fifteen minutes out of Cooma and forty-five minutes' drive from the ski fields of Perisher Blue and Thredbo. A small town means that you have only one or two options to fill up the tank and only one or two options for dining. The accommodation here is more modest and budget friendly and they have been providing the same standard of accommodation since the 80s. The prices here are about the same as Cooma and slightly cheaper than Jindabyne but you are really paying for bottom range services. I actually quite like this little town. It is not built up so when you walk out of the motel, you see lots of grass and trees and fresh mountain air.
