Reviews of Blackburn North, VIC

"Slater Reserve is home to the Blackburn Vikings Basketball Association"

Blackburn North is predominately a residential suburb with wide green and leafy streets with a combination of houses and townhouses. The area is well-serviced by Koonung Reserve, located on Springfield Road. It has cricket nets, a cricket/football oval, a tennis club and a soccer field. It is the sporting home of several cricket and football teams, including the Eastern Football League's Nunawading Football Club. Also situated in Blackburn North is Slater Reserve, home of the Blackburn Vikings Basketball Association competing in the VJBL for juniors and BigV for seniors. Well served by the newly updated Blackburn Square Shopping Centre on Springfield Road, along with Blackburn and Laburnum train stations that can be reached easily by bus. Westfield Doncaster and Eastland Shopping Centre are located nearby also. Old Orchard Primary School, and St Phillips Primary School are located in Blackburn North and while there are no secondary schools in the suburb, Blackburn High School is close by and a highly sought after school.

"Excellent little suburbs with no snobbiness"

Great food and location for shops and cafes and restaurants. Neighbours are nice, caring, welcoming and not nosey and not snobby unlike some suburbs. Most middle income and working class citizens here which is great as we are also small family with both of us working. Close to eastern freeway and schools as well as medical clinics in the area. Despite people saying it is unsafe I have not once known anyone in my street saying it is unsafe? Maybe we are all lucky in our street :)

Blackburn North is a family-friendly area with everything you need in close proximity: shops, trains, freeway. The houses are gorgeous and the streets are tree-lined! It’s pretty as a picture. The area is also filled with great school, parks, and an abundance of cafes... plus Blackburn Lake is just around the corner. Perfect suburb :)

The plural of anecdote isn't evidence. Check official crime stats for the real picture.

"A town full of sketchy people"

When me and my husband immigrated here we got advice to rent here because it is a quiet and safe suburb. However, we were instantly shocked by how many rebel teens roamed here. Infact, they bullied our daughter for attending a private school. All of our neighbours were jealous and unwelcoming, one time when we got our first car (Mercedes s-class), our neighbour who we thought was friendly came up to us and said our car was s!@% which we found offensive and funny because that neighbour was a retiree with an old toyota corolla. I do NOT recommend people to live here unless they want the unsafe experience or they are just on minimum wage. In a few months, we moved to donvale then later bulleen where everyone was nice and had neat and upper middle class lifestyles. Now that we have our permanent residency we reside in Balwyn which so far we approve of MUCH MUCH more than the low class blackburn north.

"A decent suburb of Melbourne"

We've lived in Blackie North for 3 years. Having lived in country and city prior to this, I can fairly say that Blackburn North is a fairly good suburb. It is quiet where we live, there are excellent schools and kinders, and neighbours are friendly (though most people keep to themselves). The shopping options are excellent as just about anything you need will not be too far away. Locally we have a small shopping centre, within a few km's radius there's Whitehorse Road with your large stores like Bunnings and Officeworks, Forest Hill Chase is not much further away and Doncaster Shopping Centre, to the north, which is massive.
Public transport from Blackburn in general is excellent; you have express trains to the city and buses everywhere.
There are a large number of ethnic people so from time to time language can be a barrier, unfortunately even from shopkeepers(!) but this also brings a lovely 'flavour' to the community as people learn to be more tolerant and accepting of others.
Housing prices are high as are rental prices, and this tends to keep out the lower socio-economic bracket, therefore there are few hoons or (dare I say it) bogans. There are large numbers of families and seniors. There's excellent bike trails in the area and a number of small play parks. Blackburn Lake (though not directly in Blackburn North) is lovely and not too far away.
As the area has been established for some time there are many large, established trees which adds attraction to the area.
There's not much in the way of eating out options directly in Blackie North but you don't have to travel far to bump into a heap of restaurants and take-away places.
Internet access - no problems for us at all. Parking - this can be a problem, especially when it's school pick-up times and coming home from work traffic. There's simply not the space for it, so you tend to have a glut of traffic at times. The Blackburn Road (Surrey Road) train crossing is a nightmare.
The crime rate is minimal, as far as I'm aware, though Blackie North Shopping Centre (Safeway) was robbed just a month or so ago, and about three years ago the Commonwealth Bank in there was robbed. Generally speaking though it's a pretty safe area, as far as I'm aware. We and our neighbours/friends have never had any problems.
In brief; I give Blackburn North a thumbs up as a quiet, safe suburb with excellent amenities.
