Reviews of Broken Hill, NSW

"Not a place to raise a family."

Broken Hill is incredibly under resourced, there is nothing there to do the only people who live there are mine workers, police force, teachers and nurses or people who are born & bred. There are quite a few pubs, a cinema, a public pool and not much else, I would live in this town as young person starting their career as a teacher or nurse but I would NEVER raise children here. There are a lot of mental health issues in the adolescent population in this town however there is minimal resources for them to get help. It's a very cheap town to live and probably the most affordable for majority of people these days but it's a dead town & the quality of life is very basic. Kids turn to drinking very young as there is nothing to do which cause a whole range of other issues. If you are looking to raise a family here look else where if you are young & single & have a job in mines, police, teaching or nursing it's a great place to get your foot In the door and save money

"A **REALLY** safe, nice town to live in."

It's dusty and dry and old looking. If you want "hip" and "modern" and "touristy" .... please go elsewhere, you'd hate it here.

If you want personal safety, nice genuine people, LOW LOW LOW house prices, and all the facilities that come with a big town ..... then you'll probably love living here.

The place has a slow pace and it's not full of aggressive people like the cities. A lot of people are retiring here because of the relaxed lifestyle, facilities and extremely low cost of living.

There's lots of shopping available, good medical facilities. The main street is extremely attractive and filled with character.

I agree, it has a nice slow pace, with lots and lots of great shopping. There's also heaps and heaps of fantastic community events right throughout the year. I've been here for over a year now for work/study reasons, but I'll have to return to Sydney at the end of this year. I think I'd like to live here later on, and raise a family. Without doubt it's a fantastic place to raise a family. Although of course employment opportunities would be better in a big city for kids after they grow up.

"Hot, dry and dusty"

Broken Hill is a remote mining town situated in the far west of New South Wales. It has a population of nearly 19,000, and is still dominated by the mining industry.

The town itself is neatly arranged and ordered, with a criss-cross of streets and quite a uniform style of housing. There are a huge number of pubs in the town, in fact the most pubs per capita in the whole of Australia.

Not surprisingly, the whole place is very dry and dusty. There are few gardens and not a lot of greenery. A swimming pool would be essential to cope with the heat!

"The Silver City"

For those who wish to experience the great Australian Outback in all its glory, Broken Hill is the place to go! With captivating landscapes, brilliant sunsets, clear nights, an oasis of green parks and gardens thriving in the harsh desert, Broken Hill is a town full of character. The town has a rich mining history founded on silver, lead, and zinc. Grand historical buildings and impressive monuments are lined in the town's wide streets, including colonial pubs and other public buildings. Walk the Heritage Trail to see 19th century buildings or drive the Silver Trail to see over 100 historical sites. There is a Flora and Fauna Sanctuary just 6km out of town. Be sure to visit the Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery, which is apparently the second oldest in Australia. Also, go to the Albert Kersten GeoCentre which exhibits an outstanding mineral collection including a 42kg silver nugget! Broken Hill has a huge range of accommodation and plenty of attractions, especially for art fans.

"Broken Hill - Outback magic"

Broken Hill is in far western NSW close to the South Australia Border. Often referred to as the Silver City it has one of the largest silver deposits in the world. Although situated in the vast outback basically in the middle of nowhere broken Hill offers the visitor some unforgettable sights. These are a large number of pubs and motels in the area offering good accommodation whilst you explore. Visit the Pro hart gallery, go to nearby Silverton and experience a real ghost town, see the mines and explore the Mutawinjtji National Park with its tall red gums and other native plants and animals and some beautiful creeks. See what living in an outback town is all about.
