Burwood, NSW 2134

The problem with living in Burwood is that the council has decided to be the CBD of the Inner West. Which means jacking up density no matter what. Still some nice pockets around the edges, but the centre is full of shoddy blocks and will only get more. Traffic jams and rubbish aside, the rapid rate of change also means you don't know what your street or neighbours will be like in a couple of years - standlone houses today, highrise boarding house next month.

Chose a location on Meryla street based on the quiet state of the apartment during the day but how things have changed.

Going to be before 12am is impossible every Friday and Saturday night due to Skyebar blasting music non-stop. If sleeping in is your thing, this also can't be done because of loud trucks around Burwood road every morning.

To make matters worst a covid testing clinic opened up on the street with loud staff that arrive at around 6am to do nothing but have loud conversations prior to it opening up at 8am.

I'm sure other areas around Burwood are nice...just avoid anywhere near Skyebar...

Burwood is being destroyed by over development. The construction doesn't stop here. And soon there will be as it claims 'Burwood's tallest apartment' right next to Westfield to add even more people and traffic to already full footpaths and roads that can't cope. Even the people that live in these apartments say there's too many now and they don't want any more of them.

Such a good suburb and it's safer than places you'd normally find within the Western Sydney Region

There used to be more diversity in stores and people living here, and less high rise buildings. Now there’s so many new apartment blocks! It’s become so overpriced and so densely populated! Croydon, in my opinion, is a nicer suburb, quieter and more leafy.

Very convenient suburb- 10-12 minute ride to the City, and has many express trains. Can be packed during peak hour. There’s also a westfield in Burwood, as well as buses to the East and south and trains to the north and west.

Restaurants and stores close very late at night around 10pm, so it’s quite safe to walk along the Main Street at night as it is well lit. Feels like a Chinese city.

Schools are also pretty good around the area, with a selection of private and public schools within 10 minute drive.

It's got a Westfield AND a lively mains street with all four Big Four banks. It's got a well-connected train station and lots of buses. It's got two arterial roads at the northern and southern ends. It's got a really nice big park (Burwood Park) and little green spaces here and there. It's got some of the best schools in Sydney. In terms of physical specs, Burwood is a really great suburb to live - no wonder that it's attracting a huge amount of apartment developments, and the beautiful Federation houses further from the centre command ridiculous price tags. But Burwood is so hectic - the main streets are crammed full of people at all hours, the roads are full of cars and buses. The mains street is full of tiny stores with garishly loud posters that adds to the hectic atmosphere and also speak to its increasingly monocultural character. You will find 20 restaurants serving Ma La Tang - individual food morsels boiled in a spicy Chinese broth, a relatively recent invention in mainland China - before you find a single restaurant serving even a different kind of Asian food. If Chatswood is Hong Kong, then Burwood is its sister city somewhere in an interior Chinese province. This has gotten worse dramatically in the last few years, and it's only likely to get even worse as new high rises attract more students and recent arrivals. It's great if you love Ma La Tang. If not, do you really want to pay what you have to pay to live here?

Burwood is located quite conveniently, just adjacent to Strathfield with its bustling restaurants and having express trains run through its station. While Burwood is no doubt rich in amenities what with the Westfield, the very pleasant atmosphere of the park and top notch schools performing highly in the education sector, the population density is high. Thus, there will be considerable noise pollution, which can anger the most sensitive of people. Nonetheless, Burwood is a highly safe and secure environment to reside with remarkably low crime rates, taking into consideration its prominence as a city centre. It is additionally not all too far from encapsulating waterside views, with Canada Bay just bordering it to the north. Moreover, all of its neighbouring suburbs are reputable to some standard, being very family oriented. Burwood manages to broaden the horizon that looked bleak for residential inner west.

I can't move out any other suburb but it's so expensive for renting..
But it's worth for it!

Property prices are not that low but worth the amenities being provided. Location wise is especially great for professionals with many developments having being built. Weekends see many vacationers hitting the cafes and restaurants that are a popular trend here.

My partner and I have been in Burwood for 1 year now and we do really like the location and are finding it difficult when deciding whether to stay or go. I appreciate how quickly you can get to Central and Town Hall stations by train, and the convenience of the Westfield and the strip.

Renting can get expensive and 95+% of places are not pet-friendly. It is cheaper than Newtown, but more than suburbs slightly further North such as Concord West and Meadowbank. And if you are a working professional whose work is in North Sydney, you are going to have a rough time with the trains...Burwood is omitted from the stops on the direct train to Chatswood during peak hour. Coming home during peak hour is exhausting having to try to switch trains while pushing through masses of people at Central or Redfern station. Sounds like a FWP I know, but it's definitely impacted my feelings on going to work.

There are lots of families and mature people in our area. People like to park on the street despite having their own driveways. We live in a granny flat so rely on the street.

I don't like the people much but the amenities and close location to the CBD are what keep us here, as well as the great deal on our rental.

Having lived here 2 years ago I looked forward to moving back. Unfortunately the suburb has declined sharply in that time. Now students and recent immigrants are the majority anywhere with units and conditions are dangerous and dirty

Living and working in Burwood for over 30 years I have seen the incredible growth Burwood has had and the significant plans for development committed by Burwood Council over the next 25 years which will only continue to improve Burwood’s infrastructure and position in the market.

Burwood offers diverse architecture, from heritage-listed Federation-style homes to new state of the art apartment blocks.
If you drive or walk down Burwood Rd any time of the day you would see an exciting and vibrant place to live, work and visit. There has been an influx of cafes and restaurants on either side of Burwood Rd which has become a vibrant hot spot with trend-spotters coming from all around Sydney to enjoy.

So is Burwood one of the best places to live in? Yes! Don’t think I’ll ever move.

Burwood isn't a bad place to live at all! The rental prices are decent and the location is unbeatable. Considering the amount of amenities, we live within a minute of Westfield, near the station (Fast train 12 mins to central) I can drive everywhere easily (The bay run, The blue mountains, countryside, beaches, airport) There is plenty of restaurants, we have a nice park and gyms, I have never felt unsafe at all. It is noisy but if you choose an apartment in the right place, you don't really hear that. I personally think its ideal for someone working in the CBD or Parramatta.

Burwood is convenient as it has lots of good shopping options, and a good train line, but it will soon become another crowded place with high crime rate, an expensive Parramatta indeed. Quick to get anywhere but not safe if you want to buy a house, start a family and bring up your kids. Last weekend, we went to Westfield Burwood to watch a movie. A man with his kid refused to move while they occupied our seats, and we finally had to ask a security guard to ask them to move in the most polite way possible. However, our date was ruined as we were sitting next to another man who we thought did not take a bath for 10 days, kept eating, scratching and snoring at times. Maybe there are only a few but my good impression for Burwood has lost forever and I will not come back as it is not as good as it used to be, even though this was a favourite place. In the last few years, suburbs like Burwood and Strathfield have changed dramatically, in a bad way. Places like Burwood and Strathfield are good for eating out and having fun, but when it comes to bring up a family, I will definitely say no at such high property prices, unfriendly & unsafe environment, but the quality and the community sense is no better than other cheaper places further in the west, as 50% of the properties are rented! Like Parramatta, Burwood has lots of shops and restaurants, but noisy, overcrowded and overpriced. Too many people renting in Burwood makes this place a place to rent/transit and not to live. But if you are coming from overseas and start afresh, this maybe a good temporary choice before you can find somewhere else to live. Very multicultural place with a lot of Indian / Lebanese / Mainland Chinese community which is a good thing about Burwood.

Excellent schools both public and private... westfield burwood is fairly good and the suburb is well serviced by public transport

A grant of 260 acres was made to Captain Thomas Rowley of the New South Wales Corp in 1799. He called his property Burwood Farm, probably after Burwood in Cornwall, England, where he had lived as a young man. Part of the grant is now Burwood Park. Later grants increased his holdings to 750 acres, which extended from Parramatta Road almost to Nicholson Street and from The Boulevarde to Croydon Station. Rowley’s farm gave the suburb its name.

On Rowley’s death in 1806, his will stipulated that the property was not to be sold by the trustees. After the original trustees left for England, Governor Macquarie nominated Thomas Moore as trustee, and in 1812 the property was sold to Alexander Riley for $520. His son, W.R Riley, inherited in the 1833, but by that time Rowley’s children had come of age and found that the property had been disposed of contrary to the will. They won the subsequent court action and the estate was divided among them. From 1834 the land was gradually subdivided and sold.

The Bath Arms, established in 1834 on the corner of Parramatta and Burwood Roads, is the most famous of the inns established on Parramatta Road. It became a staging place between Sydney and Parramatta. It was built in 1930. Two other well-known inns in those days were the Red Lion and the Railway Hotel.

There were a few small dairy farms in early Burwood, and some settler families established market gardens. Cattle grazed in pastures which today are the streets and roads lined with federations Houses. Although the soil in the area is yellowish clay suitable for brick making, and both sandstone and bluestone were available, there was no manufacturing of any kind at first. Burwood Brickworks opened in 1913.

Burwood remained a roadside village until the coming of the railway line front Sydney to Parramatta in 1855, when it became one of the original stations on the line. From the late 1850s, city businessmen began to build large houses in the suburb. Humberstone, for instance, was built in 1869 by John Dawson it is now St Anthony’s Home. The Priory was built in the 1870s by Mowbray Forrest. Some of the beautiful homes in the second half of the nineteenth century serve the community today. E.T Penfold’s home, Woodstock, built in 1873, became Woodstock Community Centre during the Second World War.

A public school opened in April 1858, and the post office followed in October 1861. St Paul’s Church of England, still standing in Burwood Road, was designed by Edmund Blacket and erected in 1871. At about this time Burwood began to develop as a model suburb, a far cry from its first farming days. The Hoskins family were notable builders who subdivided a large estate, which is thought to have been sold in 1904. Burwood has become a popular residential suburb with fast, convenient train services to the city, and a good selection of schools and shopping facilities. Westfield Shopping Town, opposite Burwood Park, and Burwood Plaza, near the railway station, and has sixty shops. Burwood now has a huge population, with a big migrant influence.

It's a great area for families or singles. Close to some of the best schools in Sydney, beautiful parks, great for shopping and very multicultural. It's also very central to all parts of Sydney and has great access to public transport.

The suburb is close to the city, only 15min train, and is a mayor train stop. Lots of places to eat, shop, a few parks around. Is Not Pet friendly, people seem to be scared about walking your dog, and all parks have the leash sign. The suburb has a Big asian, indian and lebanese comunity, and they seem to have a problem with dogs. Is a nice place to live, but because of the train and for being under a flying path, it can be very noisy. Also there are lots and lots of adolescents smoking trying to look cool, therefore sometimes walking on the footpath can be challenging. There are 6 building developments at the moment, so they are trying to make the area bigger, which means more population (one of the new buildings will have 20 floors!) but same streets. The flats and houses are very expensive, so you wont get any good return so I wont consider it for investment. Most of the new flats were sold to chinese that came as tourists. I would only buy if I can afford a house a few blocks from the train and not too close to Parramatta road. Any restaurant charges 25 bucks for a pizza or burger. The best thing of this suburb is the shopping mall and supermarkets open until late, and the proximity to the city, but is likely that it will become another overcrowded Waterloo.

I moved to Burwood about 6 months ago, I would say it is the best suburb I lived in Sydney in the past 9 years. I used to live in the city, and the eastern suburbs, cost of renting, noisy, and lack of fast pulic transport are always causing me to move. I moved to Burwood last year, my apartment is on 65 Shaftesbury road, it is so convinient that I can go to lots of places by bus and train. I also take the 400 bus to go the airport which saves me like $30 taxi fare every time. The train is the best thing, it takes about 12 minutes to reach Central station and less than half hour to Chatswood. The shopping is great as well. I can go to Coles and Woolworth, Kmart or Target in the Westfield at even 9pm and I feel I can find anything I need here. And the restaurants.. there are lots of great Chinese restaurants and I can grab a quick bite anytime I want, even late night. Go to the cinema is also a great night activity, I normally go to watch new movies on Tuesdays. The Burwood park is also a great spot for jogging, BBQ, and other recreational activities. Even Burwood has a variety of nationalities, people are nice and I feel safe all the time.

Burwood has high quality residents living in.. I love this place.. Traffic is very convenient.. and people there are very nice
