"Raising a family here and loving it"

Everything you need is walking distance - cafes, restaurants, bars, theaters, bookshops, parks, supermarkets, shopping, GPs, hospital, day cares, primary and high schools, universities. Easy access to Surry Hills, Newtown, Redfern and city. Buses, trains and trams to connect you to everything else. A lovely, lively and safe place to live in the middle of everything Sydney has to offer. Great area to raise a family

"Love Living in Chippendale"

A few years since we moved here and love it still. Lots to do within walking distance, no need for a vehicle or even public transport. Someone had a question about crime on Facebook = we have not had a sinle bad experience in 4 years. Love the people 20-60 year old the norm, and the many shopping areas is superb.

"Resort Like, well-manicured park and streets"

I'm in a 2 bed + 2 bath + 1 parking. Amazing view from up high, and the real perks are beautiful pool, spa and well-fitted-out gym. Feels like living in a resort and I get to walk my dogs in a well-manicured park and streets.

"Centre of Everything"

My partner and I returned to Sydney from London because of Covid. We settled in Chippendale after hearing good reviews from local work mates. This suburb is amazing and totally transformed since I last lived Oz. We are lucky to be in one of the few terrace lined streets on the western side of Regent? Street. It is a short walk to not just the city and all its attractions and facilities BUT also Redfern, Newtown, Glebe, it is literally the centre of all the fun spots. Even Chippendale itself is highly serviced, with amazing cafes, restaurants, huge Woolworths supermarket. Sliver of a suburb that punches above its weight. We haven't had a chance to fully explore the suburb indepth, but there is a mix of residential, commercial, dotted everywhere. See White Rabbit? gallery. Highly recommend for professionals and urbanites.

Just moved from an apartment to a terrace literally streets away because I love the area. Before that I was in Glebe and its leagues below as a suburb what it offers.

"Easily the best inner city suburb"

short walk to everything: groceries, shopping centres, the city's best cafes, bakeries, restaurants, eat streets, art galleries, big green spaces, literally everything you need to live well. terrific inner city suburb. neighbours chat if that's important to you.

only con is the price $$$ as it cleaned up and gentrified. surpassed even darlinghurst in this regard. not for big families unless lucky to access one of the multi-level terraces or residential warehouses.

"The tranquil heartbeat of Sydney, welcome to Chippendale."

Mr William Chippendale was granted the 95-acre land in 1819, then sold it for 380 pounds in 1821. Wow! Fast forward 186 years, the Carlton United brewery closed its doors in 2006, then this prime inner-city real estate location launched into the bustling and vibrant place it is now. Abercrombie road splits this suburb down the middle and is the main thoroughfare for traffic from Cleveland Rd to the Harbour Bridge or into Broadway. Streets to fall in love with are Rose, Shepard, Buckland, Moorgate and Pine. Chippendale offers, units, terraces or warehouse conversions. When buying think, light, aspect, quality, and effective building management. Big thanks to the visionaries of yesteryear, the Chippendale Green pocket, O’Connor, Queen and Central Park Av has turned this area into an oasis. Coffee, food and shopping, no problem, walk, wine and dine. Meat lovers don’t go past LPS Qualitymeats in Chippen Street. Hands down a great dining experience. Drop by Peace Park, its nice to pass through or drink your coffee. Jamie Zimmermann - Sales Agent Chippendale - Zimmermann Agency

"Quiet Yet Vibrant"

If someone had told me I would be living inner city with two children 10 years ago I would have told them they were crazy! Yet here we are it’s 2018 and we own a lovely terrace. Chippendale is certainly squashed between a number of busy roads yet if you are in the middle near Peace Park you would never know.
Living in Chippendale has so many wonderful advantages, you can walk/bike/scooter (my children’s preferred mode of transport) to so many things including the Carriageworks growers markets every Saturday, the Powerhouse Museum and Tumbalong Park via The Goods line, Victoria Park, use the wonderful facilities at Sydney University. There are always things on in the city or neighbouring suburbs to adventure to.
As for great places to eat and drink, the list is endless! One of our absolute favourites is Kindred. Surprisingly there are a number of young families that live in Chippendale and Peace Park is a place where many families meet to play. The families and community here are wonderful .

"Reinvigorated Chippendale"

Noticed that many of the reviews here are a number of years old. Its mid-2016 and the Frasers Broadway/Central Park redevelopment has reinvigorated Chippendale. The development brings many new food options (eg Din Tai Fung, Spice Alley, Silvereye) that add to the established options (eg Brickfields, Ester, LP Quality Meats and many more). The park itself brings needed green space to north east Chippendale, and opens up public access through the old Brewery site, connecting Chippendale with Broadway and UTS. My personal favourite addition is the Woolworths supermarket. As someone without a car, its no longer necessary to hike to Broadway or World Square for groceries. I love Chippendale. So close to Central and so much to offer. In short, take all the positives stated in the older reviews on this site and turn them up a notch or two.

Great for

  • Amenties
  • Food
  • Transport
  • Close to CBD with good public transport options.
  • Growth potential with lots projects on the card and in progress.

Not great for

  • Busy streets surrounding this suburb.

"Village vibe on Sydney's doorstep"

I've lived in Chippendale since late 2009 and have seen it bloom. It's a quiet, trendy little suburb but you'd be hard pressed to buy a house for under $1.1 million as this "gem" is on the up and up. A new wave of boutique cafes and restaurants have opened, and Chippendale Creative (basically a collective of art galleries and creative businesses) have received council support to turn Chippendale into the equivalent of Chelsea in New York, that is an upmarket arts district. Chippendale has a lovely, peaceful vibe with community gardens and ample green space (Victoria Garden's and a bunch of smaller parks). Another good thing about Chippendale is that while it is becoming upmarket, the fact that there is a large student population (Sydney University, UTS, Notre Dame University, Boston University) ensures that there is a wide selection of cheap-eats and a lively pub culture. Also, there are always things to do in and around Chippendale (e.g., book club at the White Rabbit Gallery, life drawing at the Creative Arts Centre). There's no place like Chippendale when it comes to finding a vibrant community and tranquility on Sydney's doorstep.

Great for

  • Close-knit community spirit
  • Amenties

  • Transport
  • Close to CBD with good public transport options.
  • Growth potential with lots projects on the card and in progress.

"My favorite piece of Sydney"

I have lived in the inner west for almost 15 years, and have called Chippendale home for 5. There is no place like it. I love it to bits. There is no other suburb of Sydney that has such a fresh mix of people - students, retired, families, artists, creatives, etc. Like Newtown/Glebe/Surry Hills/Darlinghurst it has everything (food, bars, pubs, etc) minus the pretentious vibe. I could sit and talk about how this is one of the most wonderful places in Sydney to live for hours... I love everything about it. I even love the crime. The constant threat of a break in keeps you on your toes. It feels urban. Its like the 80's all over again. Getting home at 2am? Watch your back. Look mean.

You simply don't get this anywhere else. Surry Hills is where rich kids go to feel like they have hit the ghetto jackpot. Dad just bought a terrace! Let's move in and pay minimal rent, working in a cafe 2 days a week! Chippendale is nothing like that. Dad doesn't pay the rent. We work hard, we play hard. We drink hard. Its quintessentially Australian.

Rent is fair. As long as you are sharing. 3 Bedders go for nothing over 8-900.

Transport is fine. Buses/trains easy as. But who needs em? You can essentially walk anywhere.

Depending on where you are, traffic is pretty good. On my street, traffic stops from 6pm. Since ive started writing this (probably 15min) i haven't heard a single car, yet i could walk to Chinatown in 10 minutes. Am I selling this enough? I should be paid to promote this suburb.

Regent Street and Abercrombie street are busy with traffic, so if you are planning on moving onto these streets, you can essentially void everything ive said about traffic.

Great eatin. Great drinkin. What are you waiting for? Sign that lease.

Infact... Don't sign anything, i don't want my rent to go up.

Great for

  • Low crime
  • Amenties
  • Food
  • Transport
  • Close to CBD with good public transport options.
  • Growth potential with lots projects on the card and in progress.

Chippendale ? I have lived here since 2008 as a home owner.I'm puzzled at some of the contributors mentioning crime and its good to see that its ranked "Low Crime" because that is true.Frankly, I havent seen ANY crime in all those 6 years through to 2014....NONE whatsoever.
As to this tiny little suburb, its one of the most convenient places anyone could live. Across the road from 3 Universities and Central Station (Sydney University, UTS and Notre Dame), 2 kms from the CBD .Chippendale is so small that anyone in Chippendale can walk to Central Station within minutes. It's hip without being pretentious and people are friendly and genuine. Cutting edge restaurants, cafe's and art galleries.A kind of Sydney version of NYC's Soho.People who live in "Chip "are an exclusive bunch.Face it...there arent many of us as its Sydney's tiniest micro suburb. Many people havent even heard of it or if they have they dont know where it is despite it having been settled in 1816 .I'm not suprised that it is now seen as the new Surrey Hills but I hope it always keeps its feet on the ground and remains good old Chip.As one contributor rightly said, its "quintessentially Australian" .

"CBD extension"

With the former Carlton Brewery transforming in to a $2 billion residential/commercial/park precinct , Sydney CBD has extended it's boundary towards the west. Close to Chinatown, Glebe, Surry Hills and Newtown you are never short of dining option and inner city lifestyle that Sydney is renown for. Forget about a car or parking in the city, just walk everywhere or take a short stroll to Central station and railway square. Thanks for reading and enjoy life in Chippendale.

"Convenient but always be aware at night"

I have lived in the suburb for 2 years now and have loved the convenience of being close to the city but at the same time having the peace and quiet of a normal suburb. In my time here however I have learnt to be extra care in this neighbour especially when it gets dark. Incidences such as violent break-ins and robberies come like storms.... periods of calm before and after. Just a few months back a girl was held at knife point in a security building for the robbers to gain entry into her unit.
As long as you remain watchful and take precautions, Chippendale remains as appealing as ever.

"This is where I call home"

I have been living in Chippendale for many years, I have great friends here and it is a real community with people planting fresh herbs and veges on the curbs. It is a funky and vibrant suburb, and very quite. There is a great mix of students and retirees. You are not going to find a quiter inner city suburb with a such a great location as Chippendale anywhere else in Sydney.
