"It will get better"

Have lived here for 5 years and thoroughly enjoyed it! 10mins to some great beaches (of which you get council parking, so its' always free at certain parking areas), 30mins to city, 30 mins to the Dandenongs. Southland one side, Chadstone on the other and DFO Moorabbin on our doorstep.. shoppers dream just quietly 80) Springvale & Clayton both offer quality affordable produce and meat, along with the normal shops / services (post office, library, police station) you expect in decent sized suburban shopping strips. Parking can be a little chaotic at times but a sense of humour behind the wheel goes along way, avoid Springvale sarturday mornings if you're a nervous driver. Monash hospital and University are all close by with local doctors, dentists, nurses also available. Public transports' improving all the time with more bus services and the new train station making getting around easier.
The dog parks in the area are fantastic, plenty of access to offlead areas / beaches and many a wonderful friendship made while the dogs romped around! Great access to vets, pet obedience schools, walking etc in and in the surrounding suburbs. Can't talk about schools at all have no affiliation with any of them.

Neighbours here are friendly, nice and helpful but we don't live in each others' pockets - (might be just our part of the street!) but we're more of the wave as you drive by, hello at the letterbox and move on type. It's a multicultural area with alot of young families begining to appear, the age is as varied as the people, and like most suburbs with main roads - we have our share of hooning and racing - not often, not alot but it happens. Not too sure where you can go walking at night anymore, but we don't.

Traffic wise Clayton Sth is a junction, it has a peak and offpeak time. If you're on one of the main roads.....there are always cars. 7-9am / 3-6pm are busy. Off peak is relatively quiet. The biggest down to living here recently is the smells. It's an issue that everyones' working towards resolving and yes, there are times that it's really bad - but eventually that will improve..... Clayton south is a 5-10yr plan suburb, there are issues now but not too far in the future we're all going to look back and say it was worth the wait.

Great for

  • Great variety of asian food available
  • Great access to offlead dog parks, vets, needs
  • Close to aminities
  • Close to Monash Hospital Emergency
  • Close to Monash University
  • Great shopping

Not great for

  • LAND fill foul smell

Looking for a home in Clayton South?

"Centrally located underrated suburb"

Have lived here for past 2+ years with our young growing family and have really enjoyed the proximity to amenities and services - there’s so much on our doorstep within a 20 min drive. We hardly need to venture out of the region. Nice local parks with modern playgrounds all within walking distance of one another, including Keeley Park, playground in the Jackson Green estate and the First Street Reserve. Walking/Bike trail along the sky rail line is nice and well used by people in the region. We often walk up to Clayton (centre road) shops and back from our house in Clayton South along this path with the kiddos on a nice day. Takes us 40 mins or so round trip (based on a leisurely walk including browsing / food purchasing time spent at the shops!).

When purchasing a place we centred our focus on the housing pockets north of the train line / south of centre road, and also west of main road (south of the train line). We felt the inner residential streets in these pockets in particular had a nicer feel to them than some other parts of Clayton South which have a fair amount of older style multi unit development (less likely to be redeveloped anytime soon). Never had any safety/crime issues in our pocket where we live, and we have established a little community of friendly neighbours (all with young professional families too) who we now call our friends.

With M-city now complete, early plans for a new suburban rail loop super hub station at Clayton, and Clayton shopping strip slowly gentrifying we expect the area to only improve in the coming years.

"In the middle of everything you need."

In general a very convenient place for daily life, especially for asian background ppl.
Upgraded train station, 2 coles, hongkong supermarket and heaps of restaurants giving a wide variety of asian cuisines. Monash uni, monash medical centre and children's hospital are just a stone away. IKEA home centre, DFO and Costco are within 10 minutes driving, Chadstone, Southland and the Glen are 15 minutes. If you drive a little longer, modialloc beach is a nice place for relaxation.
In addition, there are super cheap grocery shopping options at the neighbourhood suburd Springvale. To enjoy the saving, just remember to avoid the traffric jam during the weekend.

"Transitioning pocket in great location"

Well located and previously overlooked suburb undergoing major transition. Significant infrastructure investment in surrounding area increasing amenity and services including M-city shopping complex and cinemas nearby, rail corridor upgrades including new parkland with sporting facilities, and nearby Clayton shopping strip which will only keep getting better as more development occurs and Monash complete their activity centre structure plan for the area.
Area previously burdened by landfill to south and industrial areas however landfills have closed and are being rehabilitated. Industrial areas are slowly transitioning with two major sites being earmarked for redevelopment like Clayton business Park and pmp printing (google VPA monash national employment cluster for more information). New infill development flourishing with older unattractive properties being replaced by modern townhouses. Proximity to public transport (westall station), major arterials and services and amenities is amazing.

"Great Neighbours!"

We have been living in Clayton South for almost a year. It is a very peaceful and family friendly suburb.
We have lived in many suburbs and this is the first time we had so many neighbours come introduce themselves and welcome us to the area. Even people not on our street stopped for a chat when they saw us (we were renovating). I never knew neighbourly spirit like this happens anymore.
Chadstone Shopping Centre 15mins,
Wesfield Southland Shopping Centre 12mins,
DFO Morabbin 10mins,
Clayton Station 5mins,
Monash Hospital (and newly built Monash Children's Hospital) 8mins
Monash University 14mins
Lots of diverse cuisine restaurants nearby on Clayton Road a few mins away also.
All landfills nearby have closed and rehabilitation cleanup has started on the closed sites.

"Landfills Smell and Seagulls"

I worked around here in one of the factory. The smell from the landfill is terrible and it's bad for health. Traffic is an issue in the main road and I always bump into the rubbish trucks. For those with a weak stomach and children would you want to stay anywhere near to a rubbish dump? You may want to consider this place to stay 5 years down the road when the train station upgrades completes. But remember the landfill will continue to leach methane gas, frankly speaking we can't smell methane gas? When we can smell methane gas, the concentration must be extremely high. Methane gas was added with smell commercially to warn people of the hazards of explosion. It is not worth to put money into landfill areas.
