Reviews of Dongara, WA

"Great place to live."

I can't believe how Dongara has changed (for the better) . It has gone from a sleepy holiday destination to a very modern destination. I always feel safe when I visit. If I could move to Dongara I would in a blink of an eye. But my work keeps me in the city for a few more years, after that I will be moving to this lovely destination.

Great for

  • Safe, clean, great beach for swimming and fishing.
  • Recreation facilities great. etc....

Not great for

  • None maybe a bigger grocery chain, but Geraldton isn't too far way either.

"Relaxing location - with great fishing a stones throw away"

Great ocean views further back from the highway, lovely to wake up with the fresh air and birds singing and no other noises - kangaroos in the bush when you go for a wander around and Melaleuca is only 5 minutes drive to Dongara to get your groceries and half an hour to Geraldton for other shopping. See all of the stars in the sky at night, very tranquil.

5 minutes to protected Seven Mile Beach where you can drop your craypots to catch rock lobster go beach fishing for tailor, whiting, mullet, and many more. Great swimming and snorkelling for the kids as the reef is close to shore. The road to the beach is bitumen. Good community spirit, local rag tells you all that is going on in town, younger ones can join in with the sports at the recreation centre or older residents can join social clubs that are active around town.

Melaleuca Road is now bitumen too so your car wont get dusty and the school bus can pick kids up from the bottom of the road to either go to Dongara District High School (including primary) or to Geraldton schools. Neighbours come to help you out if you need them to.

"Interesting town with interesting history."

Dongara is on the brand Highway some 360 kms north of Perth. This fishing village is famous for its catches of the Batavia Coast Rock Lobster and is a great tourist destination with great beaches, historic buildings dating back to the early settlers. There are many fine homes with manicured gardens overlooking the ocean as well as old churches and rectories. Then of course there are the huge Moreton Bay Fig trees. Dongara has a District High School which caters for children from K -12 and has plenty of sporting activities to keep them occupied in their free time with many sports association using the towns play fields etc. The nearest major hospital is in nearby Geraldton although Dongara has a good medical centre. The town has some restaurants for those who like to eat out, take away food outlets as well as supermarkets and specialty stores for your basic needs. Major shopping can be done in the large shopping centres of Geraldton. All in all a nice little town for a sea change.

Spoken like a true real estate agent. I notice you have comments for Geraldton and Greenough also, however you forget to mention Geraldton’s HUGE crime problem, especially in the West Bank. Spalding was rated as the highest crime suburb in the state! in 2008. I thought these comments were meant to be a guide for people not a vehicle for agents to generate business. Who do you work for?

Yes, it's tiring isn't it. Comments such as "We liked it so much we will be buying property there. A place to watch and definately invest in. Not a dying town this one is alive and growing", and recommended for 'professionals'. This was written about Meekatharra. A more dire place you could not wish to happn upon.

Go away please.

I agree these comments are from Real Estate Agents. I was only in Dongara for 12 months I would never return. Their are drug and alcohol problems especially with the young. No public transport. My friend badly cut her hand there was no one at the health centre to stitch the wound, she had to Geraldton. Eating out , shopping is very overpriced. People who have brought here cannot sell their homes unless at a loss. My list of negatives outweighs the positives. I suggest people rent before deciding.
