"My vibe kind of vibe"

Fitzroy is one of those suburbs where you can be whoever you want. Accepted by any & all, the low lax Fitzroy has a welcoming attitude with the hustle and bustle feel of the city, with delicious restaurants and quirky bars hidden among the streets, Fitzroy has a lot to offer.

"Dare to call it “Hip”"

“Mecca of all things cool” and the “star of the (inner) north” are truly apt descriptions of another one of my very favourite Melbourne suburbs.

Living in vibrant Fitzroy is almost a right of passage to that demographic who has tired of the ‘suburbs ‘ and never want to be bored.

Start your search with the streets perpendicular to and between Brunswick and Smith Streets including Rose.

Great public transport, interesting architecture, walking to the CBD and gorgeous public spaces is just the tip of the enormous appeal - remember you shall need a bike ( resident car parking passes are precious!).

"Central Fitzroy"

Fitzroy is one of Melbourne’s oldest inner-city suburbs. It is popularly referred to as the mecca of all things cool and is somewhat more mainstream with great dining spots as well as great restaurants and cafes that offer a relaxed atmosphere with reasonably priced meals. Fitzroy also has some of Melbourne’s best cocktail bars to enjoy. As one of the artsy and unconventional suburbs of Melbourne, you can find many stores of vintage clothing, lots of artistic, musical, literary and spiritual shops. Fitzroy is walkable to all essentials and just about anything one requires. It is only minutes to the CBD and tram for easy accessibility. Many people choose this suburb as it has so much to offer while maintaining a very Bohemian lifestyle.

For a standard 2-bedroom unit, you can expect to pay approx $600.00 per week in rent.

"Star of the Northside"

Adjoining the CBD - & offering walkability to all that has to offer – Fitzroy is Melbourne’s oldest (1839) & smallest suburbs which provides a lot of its heritage architecture charm. Gentrification of the suburb has well & truly occurred & while some of its bohemian & druggie residents remain – but as a much smaller part of the populace – they have been replaced by high income hipsters, professionals & downsizers. Factories and warehouse sites have been converted into apartments or demolished to make way for multi residential with a wide variance in the merit of the contemporary architecture - some of it being of pretty dubious quality. Lots of Victorian & Edwardian residences, particularly single fronted terraces. As well as one of Melbourne’s largest Housing Commission complexes - Atherton Gardens on Brunswick St at the city end. It’s a culturally rich with many art galleries & performance spaces for live music etc. As well as having an incredible range of cafes, restaurants & bars. If you don’t want to walk into the CBD you can catch a tram on Brunswick, Gertrude or Nicholson streets. The Fitzroy swimming pool (outdoor heated 50m) is a great community asset. While the main “shopping strip” - Brunswick St is acknowledged as a Melbourne attraction given its cafes, restaurants & interesting retail - residents often lament the noise & out of suburb “tourists” it attracts - especially in the weekends & wish its retail mix was more practical. Residents are also able to enjoy all that neighbouring Collingwood (now even hipper than Fitzroy!) & Carlton provide.

Fitzroy has enjoyed consistently strong capital growth for houses – which is likely to continue given its proximity to CBD, historic architectural feel & cultural & culinary attractions - Scott Hall Buyers Advocate 0457 513 124

"Funky and Fabulous"

I absolutely love Fitzroy! As an agent who has been operating in the area for the past four years, Fitzroy continues to offer a vibrant flare. Whether you’re discovering a funky new bar, café or heading out to see a live gig there is always something on to see or do! The residents of Fitzroy are creative souls, another reason why I am drawn to working in the area as I am fortunate to meet many wonderful walks of life.

"HORN PLEASE - best Indian restaurant in Melbourne"

I have found the most amazing Indian restaurant in Melbourne in Fitzroy North called Horn Please. It is a modern Indian restaurant that has the most amazing food, decor and service. It is the best Indian food I have ever eaten. While we were dining, there was also an old Indian movie playing on the wall and ceiling. Stunning food and great drinks menu. Will be back. www.hornplease.com.au

"Fantastic location with great restaurants"

I recently stayed in Melbourne to look around at an area to live in and visited Fitzroy. Friends suggested Fitzroy because it is close to town, is safe, has a really nice feel about it and has great restaurants. I drove around the area and loved the old style housing. I also ate at a few great restaurants, Horn Please, indian restaurant in Fitzroy North. It has to be the best Indian restaurant in Melbourne. Try their butter chicken. It is amazing. They also had an amazing range of international beers. www.hornplease.com.au I also ate at Bontempo, italian restaurant. www.bontempo.com.au The best italian ever. Fitzroy is also the home of Brunswick Street, with so many wonderful shops and great food outlets. Will definitely live in Fitzroy.

"No car needed... Best lifestyle!"

As an experienced property manger, when asked to write a review on Fitzroy my first reflex was to read other reviews to make sure I wasn't simply repeating what had already been said.

Everyone who knows a bit about Melbourne would have heard of Fitzroy, it's funky atmosphere, the best cafes in town, the street art, live music and choice of fantastic restaurants...
When someone wants to potentially move to Fitzroy (renter or buyer), what is often not disclosed is how to get the best from the lifestyle without stretching the budget too much.

My very first advise would be : "If you do not have a car or do not need a car for work, DO NOT go for a property with a car space!"
I explain:
Fitzroy is one of the most expensive suburbs per SQM and on street car parking is far from being the best in Melbourne (narrow streets with limited parking permits available). To give you all an idea of price, a rental property with a car space would lease for approximately $170 - $250 more per month than a property without off-street car parking. Also, occupants of apartment buildings built after 2007 cannot apply for on-street parking permits which contributes greatly to the rising rental value of the car parking.

On the flip side, the tram network in Fitzroy is first class with tram lines on Nicholson street (Fitzroy west), Brunswick street (Fitzroy central) and Smith street (Fitzroy East) and a short 20 min walk (10 min by bicycle) and you are in the center of Melbourne CBD.

If you are contemplating moving to Fitzroy, do not buy a car as IT IS NOT NEEDED! Save yourself $200 per month in car parking rent and re-invest this money in your lifestyle (restaurant/bars/live music/ etc) as it is one of the best in Australia...

"Best vibe in the whole city!"

Sick of people in business suits, conventional mainstreamers and bogans? Fitzroy has the heart of the city! If you don't want to fit into a neat box designed by society, this place is for you! The suburb is mainly filled with travellers, hippys or hipsters, but those are the people that really know how to live life. Everyone is super friendly and Fitzroy has the most unique range of shops and places to eat; a little bit kooky and extremely multicultural (and half the shops never stay the same longer than 6mths). There is a sense of acceptance for everyone, no matter if they live in Atherton Gardens (housing commission), are students studying anything from law to art to biomedical science, wear capes with top hats or ride a unicycle. Renting prices are really expensive (everyone knows how awesome it is) but price of buying things is fairly cheap. If Fiztroy doesn't have something you want, it's probably only a max. 10min tram ride away!

"No longer suits me but lived there for 8 years so I can tell you that..."

Fitzroy is great from a social aspect but day-to-day living can be more difficult. For example, the main supermarket on Smith St is often surrounded by people hassling you for money etc. Most of the banks left Brunswick St as it was taken over by fashion and cafes.

Make sure you check before you buy that you can get Foxtel! Some streets are not allowed cables and if you're in a body corporate situation you may have problems with a sat dish - this happened to me.

Public transport is only okay in my opinion as you don't have trains close by. A tram into the city is easy-peesy of course.

The streets are mostly pretty (particular George St and aorund there).

"Inner city living ideal for professionals"

Fitzroy is Melbourne’s oldest suburb as well as one of the smallest, and is based just outside of the CBD. Serviced by trams but not trains, it is an ideal location for families and professionals seeking easy access to shopping strips, restaurants, art galleries, live music venues and pubs. A highly desirable suburb, Fitzroy is inhabited by roughly 8,000 people from various ethnic communities. It is home to many sporting clubs and is bordered by Carlton, Richmond, Collingwood and Clifton Hill. With average property prices sitting at $620,000, Fitzroy plays host to a diverse range of residential architecture, from fine Victorian houses to public high rises. "busy inner city location good for singles and couples"

This is a busy inner city area but it is fabulously located. Adjacent Carlton you can get a great meal along Lygon Street or have a good night out. Its also go plenty of its own cafes and restaurants. It’s within walking distance of the city and the Victoria Markets and it’s not far from Melbourne University. Add to this the factory outlet stores and you are in a prime location.
There is also a public swimming pool in the area which is a plus.
It is very well serviced by public transport making it exceptionally easy to get around.
It is a great spot for young couples and singles that love the inner city lifestyle.
