Reviews of Gilberton, SA

"Gilberton - like being on the edge of a country town but with access to everything."

This review relates to lower Gilberton, that is the section between Walkerville Tce and the River Torrens. After decades of neglect and being seen as a cheap housing option for post war migrants, lower Gilberton is in the process of steady gentrification with prices to match. Parts of it (Tyne St) have sadly not been quarantined from some incongruous and ugly modernisation, but most of the sections between Gilbert St and Park Tce are in fairly original heritage condition, and there is some heritage protection from the council. Features are the charm of the buildings and streetscape, the location next to the Torrens linear park, the short walk to the eateries of Melbourne St, being very close to the city, near excellent public and private schools. Crime is generally low, with break and enter being the main crimes. We especially like being near the River Park, where there are many species of birds, and koalas and native otters can be seen.

"A well kept secret on the north eastern edge of the city"

I have lived in Gilberton (Tyne Street) since I came to South Australia for employment reasons in September 2008. The suburb has all of the convenience, character and charm of Walkerville but is happy to live in the shadow of its more affluent neighbour I think. With its proximity to Melbourne Street, Linear Park, public and private primary school options (not much public high school access which is a bit of an issue) and indeed, the CBD itself (5 mins by car or 15mins by mountain bike), Gilberton is close to all of the facilities and attractions you could want (with the exception of the beach I guess). It is an older but much renovated suburb that is easy to live in and quickly gaining in popularity from my observations of the number of conversions underway. I would rate it an excellent location for families and couples but not singles. Retirees??? I think they are already here in numbers.

I have no idea why Simon would say Gilberton is not a good location for singles. As a single young woman I've lived in Gilberton for 7 years, and would not want to live anywhere else! For all the conveniences he's listed, its perfect for me too. In addition its close to uni, and single people also like the linear park - its good for walks, cycling and exercise. I would say Gilberton is a fantastic location for anybody looking for these conveniences, except those wanting to be close to the beach.

"A safe and established neighbourhood on the edge of the River Torrens"

Gilberton is a beautiful, leafy suburb tucked in between North Adelaide and the River Torrens. Just a 30 minute walk or 5 minute drive to the city, it is an excellent location for families.

There is easy public transport access to the city - just hop on one of the frequent buses on Walkerville Terrace and you’ll be there in minutes.

A perfect spot for dog lovers - the River Torrens with its kilometres of walking trails is right on your door-step.

There is a small supermarket just 5 mins away on Walkerville Terrace, where this is a huge new shopping complex currently under construction across the road.

There are a couple of run-of-the-mill pubs nearby (okay for a casual drink or simple pub meal). However you are just a short walk from the huge range of cafes, restaurants, pubs and bars of Melbourne Street, North Adelaide.

A lovely location for families, with nearby schools including St Andrews (a private primary school), Walkerville Primary, Wilderness (a private girl's school) and St Peter's College (a private boy's school).
