Halls Creek, WA 6770

I moved to Halls Creek on a three month contact and that was just over 6 years ago.
Its a great little town which gets better the longer you stay, there is a high turn over of professionals who come to the town for work so to really build meaningful relationships it takes a bit of time and resilience.
Like everywhere else in the Kimberley the crime rate fluctuates and break and enters happen more than they should - but in saying that Ive never once felt unsafe.

There is one shop, the local IGA which is a little overpriced but food can be brought in Kununurra and brought back. Ive found we usually head up there every 4-6 weeks.

The Kimberley Hotel and Motel provide decent meals, and there is also a little cafe and bakery.
The tourist information centre is a great little oasis worth exploring as it the art centre.

Things to do include Palm Spring, China Wall, Lake Komatopillar and Mary & Caroline Pools are the main attractions however if you go a little off track exploring you'll find some great surprise.

There is a lot of general negative assumptions made about Halls Creek and people who are quick to judge do tend to hightail it out of town, but those who get involved in community events and involve themselves learn pretty quick that its an awesome place to live.

The dry Aboriginal community of Yiyili occupies this small township which has just three streets. The primary school is delightful, and the adjacent Art Gallery welcomes visitors. One travel company, Scenic Tours, is now making the effort to drive off the highway to visit the Art Gallery, and are enjoying the interaction with the kids who have produced their own postcards to sell. The art and craft works in the gallery are breathtakingly beautiful, and genuine, done by some of the famous artists in this community.

The Halls Creek town is an important stopover point in the drive from Kununurra to Fitzroy Crossing. The town itself is fairly bland, with two hotel/motels, fuel stations, post office, and several shops - but an excellent, new hospital. The Visitors Centre is excellent, and the adjacent toilet block clean and well maintained.

Tourists should visit the nearby China Wall, an amazing geological formation of quartz that is spectacular with the afternoon sun shining on it. As well, Wolfe Creek Crater, made famous by 2006 movie 'Wolfe Creek' is amazing and worth of a stop off.
