"Beautiful country town with everything you need"

Safe, clean and very friendly with 3 primary schools and 1 high school. Have lived here 20 years and seen it change and grow for the better. It can get busy in town during the weekends when tourists visit. Many options to dine out from takeways to fine dining. Locals are super friendly and there is still a rare community atmosphere and friendliness about the town. Great place for raising a family with upgraded Queens Park, a skate park, bike track and lots of national parks and walks nearby. Lots of beautiful natural green areas to escape to, bbq facilities and even 2 swimming pools. Have been lucky to live here.

"A beautiful town and environment"

Located in the beautiful Yarra Valley , Healesville is a very pretty town with the tree lined Main Street full of fabulous cafe's, eateries and wineries and licenced premises. Love the Heritage lamps that add to the atmosphere. On the weekends there is a vibrancy of people out and about enjoying the dining and retail experience plus the wonderful tourist attractions such as Healesville Sanctuary, the Yarra Valley Railway, Queens Park and the river.
There is a local pool plus a heated pool, a small hospital and a great community.
Wonderful place to live or explore.

"Why live anywhere else"

I ended up in Healesville by accident almost 30 years ago. Met and married my husband and have bought up two beautiful daughters here. They both started at kinder and went all the way through to VCE at the Healesville schools. Both have university degrees now. I was a bit of a gypsy before I came here but I could not think a any place in Australia that I would prefer to live. The locals are lovely, the schools are good, there are 3 doctors surgeries, a good dental surgery, and emergency/after hours clinic and a small, bush hospital.(more than most towns). We are about 25 mins from the train station with only three sets of lights to get through, a bus service that takes you all the way to Melbourne or Alexandra and if you know the way, we are only about 45 to 60 mins from the airport (offpeak). There are parks and sporting facilities, rivers for fishing, bush tracks for walking, riding or cycling. Too many restuarants and eateries to mention. The list goes on and on. Truly, I seldom leave the town but if I have to, I am always glad to see the mountains in the distance because it means I'm nearly home.

Rentals in Healesville

"Friendly and welcoming country town"

Healesville district's history combines with beautiful Yarra Valley scenery, attractions such as wine tastings at the many vineyards and numerous sporting activities to produce a unique tourism area which while easily accessible from Melbourne's metropolitan areas at the same time offers peace, quiet and relaxation.
We have recently returned from Queensland to live on an acreage property near Healesville. We find the people in the area to be welcoming and friendly while at the same time there is plenty to see and do. We are now wondering why we went to Queensland in the first place, especially considering what this beautiful part of Victoria has to offer not just to tourists but also its residents!

"Tourist town not geared up for locals."

Moved here 6 years ago. Like most, I was wearing rose-coloured glasses! Beautiful place, full of quirky charm, but live here! No casualty department, (had to drive 45 minutes to nearest ER in Ringwood for child with broken arm at 10pm!) No decent footpaths (goat tracks are slippery and unsafe in winter) in the East end of Healesville. No public transport in the East end either. (Hospital end of town) Only one High school, if you want private school, Lilydale is closest. Kids catch bus at ridiculous times with no bus shelters here for them to not get drenched! You want to buy something like an oil filter for your car? You have to drive to Lilydale. One main supermarket, Coles has very little in ranges for gluten free, vegetarian, etc. Vegies etc are often stale and starting to rot. (Must admit they have started to listen to the complaints!) IGA is small and expesive.
Youth crime is VERY high here, as they are bored stupid. Nothing really for the average kid to do here. One skate park is often under water. One indoor pool is too small to allow a decent play and people doing laps are squished into two lanes only. Outdoor pool is only open for a short few months in summer and closes at 6pm daily!
Log trucks barrel through at all hours since the bushfires. Bikies, car clubs and tourists come through on Sundays, so prepare for lack of parking in Coles! No cinema to speak of. (only two shows a week and usually an Art house type fim. You fold the chairs and put them away!)
Positives? Beautiful scenery. Beautiful scenery and some more beautiful scenery! If you like wine, then this is a great wine area. Not too far from Melbourne. If you are fit, well, and have a decent car and don't mind lack of facilities, then this is a nice place to live.
I wouldn't recommend for teen families. Probably empty-nesters, retirees, artists, or those who wish a weekender.
I wish I had done my homework before I moved here! Fair armed is fair warned!

I know many who have lived in Healesville for years, yes there is no ER but thats why you become an ambulance member.
The reason most people live here is to get away from the hustle & bustle, if you want to be near shops etc then I do not advice to move to healesville, but if you would like to be part of a friendly community and would love some peace & quiet I highly recommend living here!

Morza

This sounds like the lament of an 'URBAN GREENIE' . Healesville has just as much to offer as the Dandenong Ranges and more. Your comments are unreasonable and we know families in Healesville, with teens, who have plenty of job opportunities and are rebuilding and renovating rather than move. The bus services to the private schools drop them off from point A to Point B and.... they've worked out how to use an umbrella! Toughen up princess : )

I was trying to give an honest appraisal in the WHOLE of the town not just one issue. Since my post, there is now underway development of building a huge complex including a state of the art cinema and shopping centre.
Neets, I am an ambulance member and called one in an emergency and was told there were none local to get in the car and if got worse to call Lilydale on the way. I found that amazing. Since that time, though, a new ambulance service is on its way to being built. There is now a new medical service offering out of hours service, which is fantastic.

I wrote in August 2010, and was very much an advocate in getting some things changed here in Healesville, I am proud to say things are changing!

Morza, I feel your attack on me unwarranted as at the time of writing those issues were valid. My son did not go to a private school and there are still people my end of town who have difficulty getting a bus, this too is in the works but progress is slow.

Youth crime is still fairly high, but since the installation of our new police officer Wayne Williams and his tough stance, this is starting to become a thing of minority and not majority. Again, there is in the works a 24 hour police station, very much needed in this area.

I came here after a life threatening cancer, and a violent ex-husband, I take umbrage at your rant I need to 'toughen up princess'
I enjoy Healesville immensely and am very happy to live here, especially now after many years of the locals getting the above done, we can all live in less fear, have more facilities aimed at the locals, rather the tourist.
I tried to show an honest and informed point of view.
I meant to not offend anyone.

Thanks for the more balanced update Junipergirl.

- Junipergirl - thank you for your reviews; because it is really important to hear the good and the bad. :
Both good and bad exist in all places, large and small. It takes a very brave soul to describe their experience, with truth, whilst still living in a small town,

Don't move here if you want things changed

THANK YOU for your honest appraisal. How else will we know if everyone 'takes offence' at 'their' town being described honestly, and instead paints a dishonest, deceptive, 'glorified' picture? The truth can stop people making very expensive mistakes and moves!

Just wanted to add also that of course people at different stages of their lives need different things when deciding on where to live. What younger people may think of as 'wonderful' may in fact be not wonderful at all to someone older, and vice versa. It's good to get both sides of the story!

"Just About to Move to Healesville"

We have been in Melbourne 2 weeks and after much driving around found Healesville - and agree it is very much like an english village. We come from East Sussex - Ashdown Forest in the UK. Healesville is very much like England with it's beautiful green countryside and views to die for, lovely parks and vibrant feel to it's village. Although we haven't moved in yet what we have experienced so far has been much friendliness from the locals and look forward to sampling life there. It's a very lovely part of Victoria.

"You don't have to be a tourist to enjoy Healesville"

Healesville really has it all. Just a short picturesque drive from the city and you have it all - spectacular mountain views, fine wine and dining, museums, art galleries, the sanctuary, bush walks - just to name a few. Not to mention country cafes and pubs, music concerts, outdoor cinema and markets. There is something for everyone.

What is there not to love about Healesville. A friendly country community with all the convenience of the city (minus the traffic, noise and stress). I couldn't imagine living anywhere else.

"Easily the best place to live... bar none!"

I have lived in this town for the majority of my life. It is - in one word - PERFECT! Great people, magnificent views and ideally located in a valley with mountains cradling our community. The people here always smile and say G'day as you walk down the street. The parks are clean with a friendly air where families hold picnics and there is ample room to spread out - even during Grape Grazing!
There are a variety of different housing types and areas, from small hobby farms (5+ acres) to townhouses and units, which is ideal for all different home owners. The only problem with Healesville is in the high demand for rental properties. It has been this way for many years, but more so in recent times.
On weekends, again particularly during events such as Grape Grazing, there can be a lot of traffic and it is best to book accomodation prior to coming to the area rather than risking their being a place to stay when you get here.
We hear often that the township itself is very comparable to small English villages and there is a lot of ex-U.K. residents that have recently relocated here.
I have visited many cities in Australia, being from Victoria it is common to want to move to Queensland, but I simply love this town so much that I can't ever see myself permanently leaving. It's just that perfect!

Healesville has changed/improved a great deal in the past 10 years. Once the bike link is in place from the Warburton Trail to Yarra Glen and then through Healesville to Yarra Junction, will Healesville see more young couples and families sell up in Melbourne and live a stress free lifestyle within the cleanest greenest valley in close proximity to any Australian City. From Albert Park, I have been here with family for 12 years and it is a great place to live and the next 12 will be better again... Cheers 'Juniper' Ears...
