Reviews of Highfields, QLD

"Changing and not for the better"

As it has been some time since I wrote the last review I thought I would do an update. My personal opinion and the opinion of many in our community is we have one of the worse councils ever. They are hell bent of building as many houses on as many small blocks as is humanly possible, and ripping out thousands of mature trees. Magnificent rolling hills being turned in to gettos. Many from Highfields are now packing up and moving down the road to Meringandan West, or out to Goombungee and Kingsthorp. Still only about a 20 minuet drive into Toowoomba CBD but able to secure a larger acre block surrounded by more of the same so they cant be built out by council approving tiny blocks.
As many are aware the new freeway is going in , it runs right through the lower end of Highfields, yet there is no access to the freeway ! One has to drive into the city to access the freeway that costs money than , comes all the way back pass Highfields. Yet again this comes from the council only concerned with what works best for the city of Toowoomba.
Having said all this there is now a fantastic new shopping center in Toowoomba, Grand Central with some amazing resturants and coffee shops and we now have something close to a 5 star resturant which has opened in Hampton, just 10 minuets drive from Highfields heading towards Crows Nest.

Would be great if Homley could ad a date to these reviews so people can see how things change with new reviews. I find this review miss leading. Highfields has a Woolworths and a Coles and Aldi have asked council for approval to build a supermarket in Highfields. Small blocks ? Well yes there is a developement of homes on smaller blocks but the majority of homes in Highfields, Meringandand and Meringandan West are 1/2 to 1 acre blocks. Compared to Sydney or Melbourne with has a 2 hour drive or 1 to 2 hour train trip into the city to access affordable housing, I think a 20 minuet drive is a better option. As for wild life we see lots of Kangaroos out around Meringandan, and parrots abound all over the Highfields area. Beautiful big trees give welcome relief from the heat of summer.

I left that comment maybe 5 years ago(?) And I still stand by my review. Highfields is over-rated. There are much nicer areas closer to town, on bigger blocks, with natural bushland and wildlife other than kangaroos. I have friends at Highfields who live in big houses on little blocks, where you can talk to your neighbour through the kitchen windows. I can understand that in a city, but not 20 minutes out of town. And apart from grocery stores, what is there? One decent cafe? Meringandam however is different. But it is very dry, and doesnt get the rainfall that south of Toowoomba gets.

"Space and clean air"

Half acre blocks add to the feeling of spaciousness and a country feel. No nearby industry so the air is clean and healthy. It really is the best of both worlds as being so close to Toowoomba it offers country ambience but city convenience. I lived there for two years and loved it. It is easy to get around and the access to the highway allows for good weekend breaks to the coast or why not explore the Bunya Mountains. The weather is cool in winter and in summer it is not hot and humid like the coast is.

  • Close enough to Toowoomba for major shopping
  • You can buy most things you need in Highfields
  • Peaceful
  • Not congested
  • Friendly community
  • Great Cultural Centre, gym, pool, library, sporting.
  • Village shops for tourists.

Not great for

  • Poor Entertainment & Dining Options
  • Needs movie theatres.

"A great place to live for all ages."

Having recently retired and moved to Highfields I have quickly discovered how friendly and how welcoming the locals are - no time to be bored in HIghfields as there are plenty to clubs, and organizations if one wants to be involved. There is also a Pioneer Village which is run by volunteers. Land sizes are larger which helps to keep things greener and most people have a lot of pride in their houses and land. Highfields is a very trendy area that caters for all ages. In the short time we have been here we are really enjoying everthing about HIghfields and also our grand children are close by.
