Reviews of Homebush, NSW

7th February 2023

"If you like living in filth, this is the place to live!"

Lived in Homebush for 6 months up until recently, which resulted in me running away screaming and now waking up in the middle of the night with nightmares that I’d have to go back.
People just throw their rubbish all over the place here with zero respect for the neighbourhood.
The council seems to have mostly given up on the suburb with broken footpaths and roads.
Take a walk down Parramatta road to see the high volume of abandoned retail space.
All the new residential developments won’t help the area as it’s just adding to an already overpopulated hell hole and will restrict parking even further.

Yeah the council has neglected the area you speak of.

Agreed, don't live on Parramatta Road. Probably goes for all suburbs actually.

"Homebush South is nice"

The old bit of Homebush, south of the railway and east of Airey Park, is one of the nicest pockets of Strathfield Council - quiet leafy streets, nice houses (some VERY nice), a charming town centre with a village atmosphere - great cafes, independent shops and restaurants. It's become very 'Inner West' in the last couple of decades. Great place to meet friends or have a family meal out. The area north of the railway seems to have changed in the other direction: looking very monocultural (South Asian), a lot of construction going on, roaring traffic down Parramatta Road and the new M4, side streets filled with cars and utes. Only good thing is you are close to the Bakehouse Quarter. Might be nicer when all the construction finishes, but for now it's all a bit muddy and noisy.

"Ruined by overdevelopment"

I'm commenting on the northern side of Homebush, that which is north of the railway. The whole area has been ruined by excessively large apartment developments that already look shoddy. Streets are jam packed full of cars as there's not enough parking. Used to be a good area. Now its been destroyed.

"A suburb of two halves"

If you are moving to the suburb, you really need to be aware of the contrast between the two halves of the suburb. South Homebush, south of the railway line, has a garden suburb feel, tree lined avenues with beautiful heritage houses and a few mansions, and mostly solidly built low to medium rise apartment blocks around the station. There is a lively and multicultural village centre with great cafes as well as Chinese, Indian and Korean restaurants. Strathfield central library is here, as are several parks, including a picket fenced village cricket green. Surrounded by some of the best private and public schools in Sydney.

North Homebush, around Parramatta Road / M4 and further north, is a completely different story. It's the typical story of over development and bad planning - not enough parking so lots of cars, noisy, dirty, flimsy high rise blocks that are already looking grubby and cracking. It's astonishing what developers have gotten away with here. Plus, this part of the suburb is bisected by a giant motorway with pollution spewing from the tunnel smoke stacks (aka the Underwood Road Ventilation Facility) at one end, and a spaghetti junction at the other end.

"Don’t choose it by the price, or you will regret your decision as I did."

Me and my partner have been living here for 9 months and we can’t wait to find another place to live.
People here are extremely noisy and there’s trash everywhere on the street.
North of the station is okay, but I really don’t recommend living in the south (The Crescent).
It’s good for the transport, there’re plenty of options to go to CBD or Parramatta from Homebush and Strathfield station.
If you don’t mind about people that don’t respect other people resting and relaxing time, it’s an affordable place to live, buildings are old but they have a good size, much bigger than other places closer to CBD.

"The History Of Homebush"

Eleven days after the first British flag was raised at Sydney Cove, in 1788, Captain John Hunter and Lieutenant William Bradley, First Fleet officers of the HMS Sirius, explored the Parramatta River as far as present Homebush Bay. It was a shallow swampy area, flooded with tide, at the junction of that are now Powell’s and Haslam’s creeks.

The present suburb area was originally known as Liberty Plains, because of the colony’s first free settlers received grants there in 1793. They received small grants of 60 to 80 acres, but because it was a poor area for agriculture, grants were later increased and also changed hands over the following years. The area was chosen for occupation in order to provide a settlement between Sydney & Parramatta, and it became the last overnight stop before Sydney for teams travelling from the west.

Edward Powell was one of those who were granted 80 acres here in 1793. In 1807 he established the Halfway House on an additional grant fronting Parramatta Road. His son sold the inn to his brother in law James Underwood in about 1825, who leased it to James Kerwin, known as Jimmy the Jockey. The inn was reopened as the Horse & Jockey and this early landmark is still operating today. Underwood’s property in the area was not subdivided until 1878, when lots were described as being in the Village of Homebush. The streets laid out in 1878, in what had been open country, are virtually identical to those still existing.

Another early settler was D’Arcy Wentworth who arrived with the Second Fleet n 1790 as ships surgeon on the Neptune. After Macquarie became Governor, Wentworth was made principal surgeon and chief magistrate in the colony. He received a grant of 920 acres at the head of present Homebush Bay and adopted the colloquial name Home Bush for his estate. He established the first police force in this country, he was in charge of the money-minding side of the first bank in Parramatta, and had much to do with managing the affairs in the city.
Homebush saleyards were opened in 1882 by John Harris, then the mayor of Sydney. In 1906 a large area north of Parramatta road resumed for the construction of the state abattoirs. The installations were completed by 1915, and the abattoirs were transferred from Glebe Island.

The municipality was incorporated on 6 June 1906 and amalgamated with Strathfield in 1947. An important addition to Homebush is the State Sports Centre in Underwood Road. It was opened officially in 1984 but the premier of New South Wales, Neville Wran.

The most dramatic change for Homebush came when Sydney won the right to host the 2000 Olympics. The area of the old sale yards was totally transformed. There are now world class facilities for many sports, there is a large well appointed stadium, and aquatic centre. The Olympic Village has been transformed into the self contained suburb of Newington. There are luxury units now on the waterfront of Homebush Bay. The area is criss-crossed by cycle tracks and bush walks and there are many ponds and lakes which are home to a large number of animals and birds.

"Homebush is Key"

Being located within a 15km to the CBD, 10km to other hubs such as Parramatta & North Ryde. Homebush has many attractions to offer. It can be loosely broken up into two parts:

The north side of Parramatta rd has small to medium size houses and apartments/townhouses. It is very close to George Street (local eat street which also includes Cookies Bar, Harris Farm, Moree Meats & Aldi) and to Olympic Park & Bicentanial Park. Local train station is North Strathfield which has many express trains into the city which take about 25mins.

The south side of Parramatta rd has A small community shopping strip with cafes, IGA super market, bottle shop , restaurants etc. This part is made up of a mixture of units though to large estate homes. Train station is Homebush which has easy acess to Sydney/Parramatta.

With a mixture of large and small developments in the area, improvements to public transport and increase infastructure in the Olympic park & Wentworth point areas and close proximanty to Rhodes/Burwood shopping centres Homebush's profolio is sure to rise. Currently it offers an affordable to option for entry into the Inner West market as well as some of the most impressive fedaration homes Sydney has to offer. Can be slightly busy with traffic and news but what suburbs with in 15km of a major CBD in the world aren't.

"Excellent Value"

Wasn't sure about Homebush when moved in but a year in (and finally setting down) realized a lot of value. The north side of Homebush (Park road area) Its walking access to DFO, flemington, north strathfield and even strathfield is only 20 mins walk away so that bumps up the transport. Peaceful, quiet and safe during day or night.

"Great value for money"

Fantastic if you want to be near transport, resturants and parks and recreation. The opprtunity for growth is here too many cant afford the inner inner west prices so it still affordable and the trendies and youngsters are moving in. Really safe and close to major schools, shopping hubs and entertainment. Looking for property that has already reached price potential seems odd to me homebush is a silent housing opportunity.

"Homebush - Underwood Road"

We have lived here for nearly 6 years and love it. You have all the public transport you would need, we have an easy 10 minute walk to both Homebush and North Strathfield train station and two bus stops 5 minutes away. There are some great local pubs, some super restaurants on George street and DFO is right at the end of the street. Although Underwood Road is very busy, we don't really notice the noise, though it can be annoying when there are big events at Olympic Park and the cars can back up all the way to Parramatta Road.
