Horsham, VIC 3400

I last lived in Horsham several years ago and still have friends and family there. Unfortunately I have to say that the only positive development in that time has been the breaking of the drought - it looks nice and green again but in many ways it continues to go backwards. The biggest problem is lack of jobs and industry; if you have a good stable government or private industry job then you can have a nice lifestyle but otherwise the biggest source of income is Centrelink. Down the street on any given day you'll see lots of bored kids sitting around smoking; at night the youth do 'blockies' endlessly up and down the main drag but I guess that's no different to any other Aussie rural city.

Inner areas have lots of run down cheap rentals - if you do move there live outside of town or in a new estate as the neighbours will probably be better. For some reason there's a general reluctance of Horsham people to renovate older houses which is a shame because a lot of older stylish Victorian and Edwardian places have been replaced with boring flats/units in the last ten years. I guess nobody renovates because blocks of land on the fringes are really cheap. I notice an earlier poster mentioned that there's a railway station; unfortunately there hasn't been a regular train service since 1993 although there's a frequent V-line bus from the main street. There used to be a really wonderful established golf course but it burned to the ground on Black Saturday (2009), they are presently trying to rehabilitate it.

In fairness some things have improved; there's a lot more restaurants to service the tourist market and I've heard that the medical facilities have improved vastly (you used to wait a fortnight to see a GP); its fairly safe for young families although educational opportunities are very limited (2 main secondary schools and a TAFE). It is also fairly easy to cycle around and there's a lot of bike paths.

One of the beautiful qualities and drawcards about a Horsham lifestyle is the lack of medium to high density housing.
Our houses and yards afford our children the ability to have a hit of cricket or to kick the footy in the backyard and allow those of us who are so inclined to grow veggies and have gardening as a hobby.
Our pets also enjoy the added health benefits of free range exercise that only a backyard can allow.

Horsham has a lot of new projects happening in and around the town, which is aimed to attract more people to move there.
It has amazing cafes, health services, multiple great restaurants and even a few great schools!
There are also plenty of job opportunities going in Horsham at the moment, so if you’re thinking of buying in Horsham, nows the time!

Horsham is a lovely little town on the banks of the Wimmera River. It has all the essentials for living comfortably and not too much excess. You'll never get stuck in a traffic jam here and all services are within walking distance. Also the river is amazing to walk along at any time of the year.

Horsham is a family friendly town with great local football clubs, schools and local businesses. Horsham has a range of clean and tidy local cafes and pubs that you can enjoy a cold beer or that morning coffee all year round.

Grew up in Horsham and to be fair that was enough. Moved away and dont miss it.
Nothing to do for families and the most annoying part is the massive wasted potential of the Wimmera river.
Go to any other town with a nice big river and the banks are full of cafes, restaurants and bars.
In Horsham you cant even use your boat.
Some good small businesses but thats about all.
Very little recreation.
Main entrance coming from Melbourne is the revolting industrial estate and the power station. Not a good first impression.
Pubs are boring seeing the same people every week and lots of fights.
Hope the council reads this and uses my rate money theyre still receiving and puts it to good use.
Also starred in a documentary about ice addiction so that basically says it all.

Have lived here for 6 mths and a decision we now regret. Employment is very difficult, unless you are in the health industry. Rental properties are in very poor condition and anything thats of value is in the high $300 and over $400. Good opportunity if you can buy, if you have the funds and like doing renovations. Home owners don't appear house proud in the older areas which is a shame and the newer areas think they are above class. I think you need to have been born here to know the comings and goings. Fitting in with locals can be awkward, so it can be isolating. What i do know is someone is getting rich on over priced rentals!

Small country town, beautiful river. Rental very expensive, lack of job opportunities. No vacancy for childcare. If u intend to move here to work full-time and intend to use childcare, don't even think about it. Lack of activities for kids. Some bus service starts at 9am so u can't get to school in time.

Plenty of fresh air, mild winters and plenty of summer sunshine. Lakes and rivers at your doorstep, affordable housing and recreational activities. A modern hospital with excellent surgeons and GPs. Beautifully kept gardens and streetscapes with ample parking, get to work in 5 minutes without battling traffic and smog. Very family-friendly with good schools and plenty of sporting and other activities to keep the kids entertained. Excellent tradesmen, an active community and all the facilities you need to stay fit, happy and healthy.
Move to Horsham and live a relaxed, comfortable, family-oriented lifestyle at a fraction of the cost of city living.

Lots of things to do, and plenty of attractions, great shopping, and very friendly town.

Having owed and rented in Horsham many years ago.. I was amazed at the price of renting in Horsham. If you are like me, I enjoy some of the basic creature comforts such as a dishwasher, built in robes and the essential Aircon for such a hot place in Summer.. For these features you won't get much change out of $250 a week at a starting price. This will see you in an older 3 bedroom home with the appliances just as old.. Normally the bathroom and kitchen are in original condition.. For anything circa 90's + start looking around the $300 a week,.,, Yup that’s right we are talking about Horsham, 3 and bit hours from Melbourne. These are the prices I've come to expect in outer suburbs of Melbourne.. Now this would be all fine if the wages were comparative to city wages.. They are not.. So before making a sea change to the country, ensure you know what your salary is going to be before locking yourself into an expensive rental.. Also remember that the public transport systems are very basic, so it normally means more driving, which equals more fuel costs.. Country living isn’t as cheap and simple as it is made out to be.
Someone is making a lot of money in Horsham and it is defiantly not people renting.

Winner of Australia's tidiest town in 2001, Horsham has a population of over 14,00, making it one of the largest towns in Victoria. It is a busy town and also a country centre, as it is surrounded by a number of large farming properties. There is a strong sporting culture in this town, and lots of recreational activities on offer.

It is a great spot to raise a family, although note that many children in their late teens tend to head to the capital cities of Adelaide or Melbourne for further study.

There is plenty to do in Horsham and as it is a reasonably larger country centre it has everything. There are plenty of shops to get all the essentials and a good dose of local produce. A lot of people will come from teh surrounding towns to get what they need in Horsham.
To keep kids of all ages happy there is mini golf, ten pin bowling and an indoor adventure playground which is obviously good for something to do on those rainy days. Although there are also plenty of parks for the rest of the year.
There is a great golf course for the golfers making it one of the most appealing country centres you can find.
It has a great family vibe and there are some good schools in the area so you shouldn't have to drive for ages to drop them off, they can ride or walk.
There are some great houses on good sized blocks around town that make Horsham a great place to raise a family.

There are plenty of picturesque walks in Horsham, along with plenty of places to sample local produce like wine, olives and lamb. Mini golf, ten pin bowling and an indoor adventure playground will keep the kids entertained for hours, while there are a number of regular local produce markets. It is also home to many artists and the town has a number of galleries and festivals to celebrate this link. If you're a golf enthusiast, the town's golf course is ranked in the country's top 100.
