"Best kept secret in the Inner West"

A cute little suburb 10km from the CBD and next to the eateries of Marrickville and Dulwich Hill. Large blocks and federation homes, golf course, metro and train station. Ewen Park is stunning with the new Cooks to Iron Cove bridge greenway.

Looking for a home in Hurlstone Park?

"Hidden Gem"

We bought an apartment here just over a year ago (start of 2020). We knew very little about Hurlstone Park when we moved here, we were looking at the inner west as a whole and chose based on a list of requirements we had and Hurlstone Park ticked the most boxes.

Getting to the city: During peak hour/day traffic, it's just a 17 minute train ride. During after hours, a 15-20 minute uber/drive. Hurlstone Park feels very quiet and suburban at times, but you are still very close to the city.

Parks & Schools: No matter where you live here, there will be nice parks & schools within walking distance in any direction. Yeo park or Ewen park in particular.

Hurlstone Park Village: We were pleasantly surprised by this, there's only 3 cafes and about half a dozen shops, but the 3 cafes are all amazing. Great food, great coffee, great atmosphere. All feel very local with everybody talking to everybody and the staff learn your names quickly. There's 2 pubs in Hurlstone Park (HP Hotel & HP-Canterbury RSL). Both are sports bars with very sports bar vibes. They both do great food though oddly enough, and are both nice enough to have a drink at. If you're into sports bars you will love them, if not then they are good enough if you don't want to travel.

Nightlife: One of our requirements was to be walking distance to a nice area with bars/restaurants/etc. Hurlstone park has none of this yet, in 5 or 10 (maybe 20) years it will as New Canterbury Road slowly gets redeveloped, but in the meantime Dulwich Hill is a lovely little town that's only a 10 minute walk away. It only has a handful of bars and restaurants worth going to, but they are there none the less. Friday/Saturday night they are all busy with a very nice city atmosphere.

Nightlife Part2: Summer Hill, Petersham & Marrickville are only a 5 minute drive/uber. Summer Hill is essentially a more gentrified Dulwich Hill, with a nicer selection of bars & restaurants. Marrickville was voted the best suburb in Australia and Petersham is always nice for a change. After these local places, you are only a 10 minute drive to Newtown or Leichhardt, and a 20 minute drive to the City/Surry Hills/Darlinghurst, so you have plenty of choice here.

Redevelopment: All the redevelopment is being done along New Canterbury Road/Canterbury Road, so Hurlstone Park itself will change very little over the coming years. There will be no through traffic, there will be change to the village feel of the area, there will just be more apartments, more shops/restaurants, more people and more money in the area.

Beaches: Probably the only downside. Botany Bay is 20 minutes away, but it's not really worth going to. The Eastern Suburbs beaches are only a 30 minute drive normally, but on nice days when the traffic to the beach picks up it can easy be 40 or 50 minutes.

Shopping: There's plenty around - Both supermarkets and retail. Ashfield is a 5 minute drive (Woolies/Coles/Aldi), Burwood Westfield/Marrickville Metro are 10 minutes, Broadway/Hurstville/Sydney CBD are 20 minutes. There's also local supermarkets closer.

10/10 - Recommend living here.

"Close to everything you need"

Where do I start ..Hurlstone park is great for professionals and families. It has everything you need and more with the park nearby. There are buses to the city from Canterbury station that take you there via Marrickville and Newtown and Sydney University. It's a 5-10 min drive to Marrickville eateries, and organic markets. There is Aldi and Woolworths supermarkets in Canterbury, (with parking) you can also walk there. Don't forget Charlie's Bakery for great haloumi, spinach or meat and cheese pizzas they make the best ! Located on Canterbury road near Aldi and there is also the famous Baalbek lebanese bakery fresh pita break baked daily. Local cafes - Baked by Dora and her amazing cakes. There is also the Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL with restaurants, events, fitness classes and pilates at great prices. A great little community. There is Canterbury hospital and medical centres not far away. The cooks river for exercise and fresh air. All up ...you have great transport options, access to schools (Trinity Grammar School,, Canterbury Boys and Girls High School) and universities, you can walk to the supermarket, train station and bus stops.

"a suburb where everybody knows you!"

the best subburb in the inner west! It's not a matter of what it has, but a matter of what does not have? It's got everything you can think of, ticks all the boxes, so close to the city and everything and yet, i wake up with the birds! Amazing! Some people on the reviews say that it's not good for night life!??? How can you complain when you're so close to the city???! Catch a bus, a cab, a train, light rail and you are litteraly anywhere you want in 5 min. You can even walk to dulwich hil or summer hill! Best place ever! Beautiful suburb for all ages!

Seriously, what a ridiculous post. To rate a suburb 1 star based on a single issue (that isn't actually an issue) is very poor, dishonest and completely missing the point of Hurlstone Park. In the 7 years we've lived here, air quality has never been an issue at all.

"Best of both worlds - quiet and leafy but only 20 mins from the city"

A hidden gem of the Inner West! While searching the Inner West looking to buy, we fell in love with Hurlstone Park and ended up buying here almost a year ago. It has the perfect balance of peace and practicality, and we love the quiet streets, friendly neighbours and leafy parks, while having the convenience of a 20-minute drive or train trip into the city.

Having lived in Marrickville for 5 years previously, what attracted us most to Hurlstone Park were the larger block sizes and better value for money, and we've been rewarded with some nice perks, too, such as the Cooks River Parklands which is great for cycling, walking and picnics etc. The light rail from Dulwich Hill station (10 mins' walk) is great, with easy stress-free access to the Fish Markets, Darling Harbour and the City. There's virtually no through-traffic which makes it quite and safe. The shopping village is small but has a nice feel to it with all the essentials - handy little supermarket, great butcher, tasty pizza joint, good barber, newsagent and an awesome bottle shop.

The only downside so far is the lack of dining and coffee options in the main street at present, but with the zoning changes and many new apartment blocks going up along Canterbury Rd, this will surely change in the next few years as more young people move into the area. Having said that, there are plenty of great eating and cafe options very close by, along Canterbury Rd, in Dulwich Hill and Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL, plus Marrickville is only 2 stations away and Newtown only 15 mins by train via either St Peters or Erskineville.

Highly recommended for anyone looking for a quite, leafy and friendly suburb that is still an easy commute in to the city.

"Excellent inner west suburb"

We moved here from eastern suburbs and I just love how quiet it is! Even living close to the railway I'm just amazed to hear birds and cicadas instead of traffic and people noise we experienced in a place before. It has a very quiet and peaceful feel to it even though it's only 18min from the city! I love going for walks near the river and cycle up to Lilyfield/Five dock or Botany cycle path. New Dulwich hill light rail is 10min walk, Ashfield and Marrickville shopping centers 5min drive, Newtown 10min drive, beaches 15-25min drive (depending which one you go to). there are also talks about Canterbury development and creating a residential hub there with the new buildings going up and shopping center coming. Hurlstone park would still remain quiet and peaceful while still having access to all the areas nearby. People are super friendly, loads of families and very clean (apart from canterbury rd but I've heard they are going to lift it up a bit).

"Truly a local secret!"

We moved here from the inner city in September. We are down on the river and it is very quiet and peaceful. Great little shopping village, the little supermarket stocks a wide range and people still stop to pass the time of day. Feel very safe here and public tranaport links are excellent. Love it! "Nice feel to the place"

The suburb is great for young families and professionals. I have lived in nearby Ashbury for 18 years and have moved to Hurlstone Park to be closer to city bound transport and closer to the river and parklands. Nearby suburbs of Dulwich Hill and Summer Hill are becoming out of reach for most people, so there is alot of interest in Hurlstone Park. The people are frinedly and all my neighbours have lived there for 40+ years. There are plenty of shopping options nearby and the convenience of the Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL which is one of the best clubs I have been too.

"For young and growing families"

I moved here in 2007 and love it. It was a great little discovery and still is. The Cooks River parklands are enjoyable everyday of the year, even when it rains it is a great place to listen to the raindrops falling on the river and the leaves move in the wind. As other people have commented after work you go down there for a walk and you can disconnect, you can go for a bike ride, exercise, play football, etc. There are many public transport options which may be relevant to you if you are a professional. Depending where you rent/buy there is Canterbury and Hurlstone Park stations, buses to the CBD (including prepay express), Balmain, Rozelle, Canterbury hospital, Roselands shopping, etc. There is also an Aldi supermarket nearby, liquor shop, post-office, super friendly and fresh butchers shop in the village, Canterbury swimming pool/Gym, coffee shops, medical centre, Grumpys Inn Bar, newsagency, etc.

Hurlstone Park (HP) is surrounded by the suburbs of Ashfield, Ashbury, Marrickville, Dulwich Hill and Canterbury, but in my view HP nicer as there are less apartments and it is not so crowded. Having said that, all those suburbs have become popular over the years, yet Hurlstone Park has been a slow mover in comparison, but more people are discovering its' charm: federation houses, wide streets, family-friendly, lots of green spaces, good public transport, and quiet. You can say hello to passerby's and get a friendly reply. I don't hear annoying dogs barking at night, but I do hear an occasional possum or bat at night, in the morning i hear birds chirping out font in the garden from Kookaburras, Rosella's to blue wrens! On summer Sunday afternoons some neighbours are gardening, mowing their lawns, kids are occasionally riding down the street on their scooters, walking their dogs, etc.

If interested in buying here, you should also check out Canterbury Councils webpage for details regarding future precinct plans, rubbish removal policies, etc. As a home-owner you will have the right to two (2) household waste collections per annum of 3m square for example.

Hope the above is useful for your purposes

"Leafy quiet inner city with excellent transport and schools"

Hurlstone park has parklands along with transport convenience. Millions are being spent on the river, cleaning it up, plantings and new sandstone retaining walls, bike and walking trails as well as exercise stations.

It is only 8Kms from the city by train, has excellent bus services and will soon have the light rail terminus nearby. Often overlooked is the fact that it is a 5-10 minute drive to the South Western Motorway - two options are Arncliffe or Bexley North access points. Even though it has transport convenience the suburb has minimal traffic.

And unlike many other inner west suburbs it receives minimal aircraft traffic as it is in a direction at an angle between the North South and East West runways yet it is only a 15 minute 8Km drive to the Airport.

There are a number of schools in the area - including many private schools e.g.Trinity Grammar is a short 2Km and a 5 min bus ride proved access to Ashfield station for access to all of the private schools in the Croydon-Burwood-Strahfield area. There are also a number of child care centres, including a council one.

Gentrification has been underway over the last few years with many young families moving in to the area.

"Hidden Gem"

A great local community, Canterbury prides itself on its traditional family oriented culture. Dominated by families who have lived in the area for many long years, neighbours are warm and friendly. The small local primary school (Canterbury South Public School) helps build this tight nit community relationship even further.

With established parks, and cycle ways and walkways extending through to Dulwich hill, enthusiasts can enjoy a good jog with lovely scenery along the cooks river.

The mature native local tree (bottlebrush) lines the streets with its stark black trunk and contrasting red flowers, adding a signature dimension to the streetscape.

With neighbouring suburbs of Earlwood, Hurlstone Park, and Dulwhich Hill, there is also a large selection of schools, aquatic centres, gyms, churches, and dining restaurant's to choose from. With a major Woolworths in Campsie, and a newly built Coles Group Complex in Earlwood, grocery's are only 5 minutes away.

Only 12km away from the CBD, Canterbury train station will get you to the city within 20 minutes. It’s very close proximity to Sydney City is by far one of Canterbury's hidden assets.

"Great place to live"

I currently live here, and it's got it all. Parklands, river walks, inner west vibe and proximity to the city (15-20 mins leisurely drive to central, same by rail). Locals are close knit and know one another, which is really a plus considering its only 9km to the Sydney CBD. The local shops, rail station and extensive parkland make it a great place to buy, but I would say that it would be better to get in sooner rather than later - this place is really gentrifying, with smart buyers from neighbouring marrickville, Dullwich Hill and Ashfield seeing it as the last affordable "lifestyle suburb" in the inner west (most blocks are 500 sqm + which is big for the region).
The best part of days end after the 20 min train ride home from the city, is getting straight down to the river walk with the dogs - you'd never know the city is such a short distance away, as you wak through the beautiful nature reserves.

"Very similar to Dulwich Hill"

Hurlstone Park is located right next to Dulwich Hill and the two suburbs look very similar. Hurlstone Park is about a thirty minutes' drive to the city and is located in the inner west of Sydney. It is mainly a residential area with many houses around the area (some of these houses are heritage listed).

There is a train station that services this suburb - Hurlstone Park Station and it is approximately a thirty minutes train ride from Hurlstone Park to Wynyard Station during peak hours. There are a couple of shops, service stations and restaurants in Hurlstone Park. Additionally, there is the Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL Club that is a great venue for entertainment and cheap beers.
