Julatten, QLD 4871

Julatten is a separate tablelands area to the north of the Atherton Tablelands. As the elevation is a little over 400 metres above sea level, the climate is exceptionally good. It has no frost in Winter and, compared with the steamy coast, is around four degrees cooler in summer and significantly less humid. Most of Julatten is a rainforest environment; it was initially logged for red cedar and other timbers and settled for dairy farms. These days it is a tropical fruits area although several cattle fattening properties also remain. Sugar cane has also arrived. There is much World Heritage listed rainforest in the area. Julatten is just twenty minutes from Mossman on the coastal plain and 25 minutes to Port Douglas; hence Julatten is to the tropical coastline north of Cairns, as Mapleton and Montville are to the Sunshine Coast and Mt Tamborine and Springbrook are to the Gold Coast. A mixture of people now reside in Julatten, including young families and retirees. There are numerous "lifestyle" blocks of at least five acres. There are shops, a hotel, a tavern,a garage, primary schools, post office, visiting doctor and numerous B&B's in the area and most other town facilities, including a high school and a hospital, are just 'down the range' at Mossman.
