Reviews of Keilor Downs, VIC

"I’ve blocks and easy access"

Blocks are decent size, easy access to 2 freeways to get to the city within 25m. Train line is walking distance and a small shopping center that has been upgraded to have everything you need. Very safe and owner occupiers everywhere.

"Best place in Victoria"

Location Location! This is an amazing place to live in. Close to schools, parks, shops, public transport, freeways and the city. Safe area with many living in their own homes. Everything is easily accessible within 5 minutes. Wide roads and huge blocks where everyone has their own space. Would not live anywhere else.

"Keilor Downs- The sweet spot of being close to everything, but not too close."

The top 5 reasons to live in Keilor Downs:
1. Larger blocks of land and wider roads, especially when compared to the newer estates they are building. The homes are not identical soldiers glued to one another, so there is reasonable space between homes.

2. Truly ideal location for traffic flow. It is so easy to get in and out of the suburb as it is serviced by different entry points. You are within 5-10 minutes of freeway access, with the choice of either the Calder Freeway or Western Ring Road, which are both of relatively similar distance from the suburb. Having driven the roads in the area for several years, it's so relieving to be able to avoid bottlenecks and super busy intersections that affect some of its neighbouring suburbs (e.g. If you're a city worker, in morning peak, jump on the Calder freeway from green gully road instead of melton highway and you will save yourself easily about 15 minutes. Then in evening peak, you don't need to go through the crazy taylors rd/kings rd st intersection to get home).

3. It's a really peaceful, family-friendly suburb. Most people here are owner-occupiers and have lived in the area from its inception, so many neighbours are familiar with one another. There are parks and reserves dotted along the suburb. It's also nice to see some traditional milk bars still operating in the suburb, which you just don't see anymore in newer suburbs.

4. You are zoned within several good public, catholic & semi-private schools in the suburb that you really do have choice on where you would want to send your kids.

5. Finally an obvious benefit is its proximity to the city & other major amenities. By car in no traffic, you can be in the city within 20 minutes. Or by train, it's less than 30 minutes. Sunshine hospital is about a 10-15 minute drive, Melbourne airport is also about 15 minutes away and a 24-hour police station is in the heart of the suburb (not that you would want to go to the station, but there's comfort in knowing it's there).

I would say the best part of Keilor Downs is the pocket between Copernicus Way and Sunshine Avenue, right up to Lady Nelson Way. It is a bit newer than the other side of Keilor Downs so no overhead powerlines, it is closer to the train station & all major shopping centres servicing the area (Keilor Downs Central, Taylors Lakes Shopping Centre & Watergardens) while still remaining a little bit further from the likes of St Albans and it's also not backing on to the train line like some Keilor Downs streets are on the other side of Copernicus Way. If you can buy a property in this pocket, you really are hitting the gem of the suburb.

Living here, you can see why Keilor Downs really is the sweet spot of being close to everything but not too close.

Of course, no suburb is perfect. But for what Keilor Downs has to offer, it comes pretty damn close!

"Perfect place to raise a family"

A quiet neighbourhood. Lovely parks to take your kids to.
Not far from anything. Everything is accessible within a short distance.
Streets are clean.
A great feeling of safety too. Police station in the heart of Keilor Downs.
Block sizes are superb. You won’t get these sizes anywhere else.

"Best Value for Money in Melbourne"

I have lived in Keilor Downs for 30 years. My parents bought a block in the 1980s, built their dream home, and still live there. Indeed, this is the story for most of the residents. I have also now bought in Keilor Downs. My decision to do so was an easy one, given how well I knew the suburb.
Where else in Melbourne can you buy 650m2 of land, with a beautiful brick veneer house, surrounded by trees and birds, with lovely neighbours, all within a 30 minute train ride to the city for less than $750k? With multiple parks, traditional Milk Bars, and an outstanding Shopping Centre, Keilor Downs literally has it all.
In my opinion, the best part of Keilor Downs is the section wedged between Keilor Plains Railway Station and the Shopping Centre, given that you can walk to both; but houses in this part are hard to come by so if one comes along, you should do your best to get in!
Another relevant factor is the low density nature of the suburb. St Albans (neighbouring suburb) is quickly becoming "flat central"; but Keilor Downs has retained its almost country-style charm.

"Happy to have Purchased"

We moved into our own home, after renting in Caroline springs, this year and are very happy. There is certainly a difference of class between the new suburbs and Keilor downs, it has a charm of its own. The areas of Keilor downs near Taylor's lakes are even better, ofcourse you may have to pay a slight premium for those properties.

Great for

  • Proximity by Public Transport
  • Clean and Green
  • Parks and Recreation for Children
  • Very Close to Shopping Centers

"lovely, quiet and classy suburb"

Have been living here for over a year. I was very lucky to buy a house at a reasonable price. So far, i am so happy with my decision. I am working in the city, in the morning, it is pretty easy to catch a train from Keilor Plain Station to the city. It takes only about 30 mins.

Pros:
Love the atmosphere of this suburb, houses are nice with well-maintained gardens and lots of trees around too. Spotless and spacious streets. Plenty of room for car park.
Great investment, you can get a huge land with very good price in this suburb. In addition, it is very easy to rent it out too. I have been renting out 2 bedrooms in my big 4 bedroom house within a week putting up the ad.
Easy access to Western Ring Road, Tullamarin Freeway. Otherwise, for CBD commuters, there is Keilor Plain train station take you to the cbd.
Facilities: Keilor Shopping Centre, Water Garden Shopping Centre are close by. St Albans Leisure Centre provides basic stuff for gym lovers. I personally do not recommend the swimming pools there, they are not deep enough for aldults.
Schools: I have not had kids but seem like quite a fair bit of schools around.

Cons: limited number of caf and no boutique shops. Do not expect to get fancy stuff from the shops here.

"Oh...what a lovely suburb!"

Oh what a suburb. Ever since moving here in 2013 we have been enjoying every minute of it. Its so close to the shopping centers (watergardens, Keilor and TayorsLakes) that my wife and me usually take a walk for small shopping. Very peaceful and safe with mostly established people around this is really a hidden gem. Before you make any buying decisions do drive down this suburb atleast once and you will see the point.

"Great Value for Money"

After researching through all major suburbs in Melbourne for buying a house we found Keilor downs as the suburb offering the highest value for money. Nice, clean and green suburb with lovely well spaced houses and overall less than 30 mins from City by train. It is flanked by three shopping centers ( watergardens, Taylors lakes and Keilor) making it really convenient for buying stuff.

It was a really good decision to buy a home here and we are loving it.

"Good Life"

I have lived in Keilor Downs for more than 25 years now. We have never had any issues & live in a lovely quiet street with walking distance to parks & shopping Centres. Me and my family just love it. It is a short drive to the Melbourne Airport and only 20 minute drive to Melbourne CBD. Its close to the ring road so you can get to Epping to Geelong ver quickly. We medical facilities, Sunshine hospital is 10 minutes away, and train stations near by. Keilor Downs is within the heart of everything that you need without the traffic. Police station is walking distance & so is the fire brigade. This is a great suburb where people stay for the long term .... Its great for raising a family or for couples.

Most people are home owners not renters. Lots parks and open space. Brimbank park and Green Gully around the corner. There is a Police Station, Medical Clinics and Keilor Downs shopping plaza, Coles, Kmart and Aldi. Taylors Lakes Shopping Centre and Watergardens just a few minutes drive. Great Vietnamise Restaraunts in St Albans. Keilor Plains train station is walking distance, and buses near by. No ugly overhead powerlines and streets aren't narrow and clotophobic like newer estates. Great place for families with kids with reasonable size back yards.easy to get to Calder Hwy, Ring Road to Geelong or Surfcoast, and only 15mins from Airport.

"Dont buy"

It looks far better than it lives. Couldn't wait to get in when first buying, judged a book by its cover. Really couldn't wait to get out though, shocking two years of my life I'll never get back.
It's like a dressed up St.Albans. On the outside looking in it appears to have it all. Scratch the surface a little though and find that aside from the newish houses, there isn't much there at all. If you want to shift out and have the dollars to do so, go find something Airport Westish or Keilor East. Older and better facilities all round for both younger and older families. Wouldn't move back if you paid me.

Great for

  • About the only thing it doesn't have but they'd do a roaring trade.

Not great for

  • There's a reason somewhere why it is called 'Downs'

"Been living in Keilor Downs for almost 20 years.... Just Love It."

I have lived in Keilor Downs for almost 20 years now. I moved about 6 suburbs before settling down here. I just love it & so does my family. We have never had any issues & live in a lovely quiet street with walking distance to 3 children’s parks & 3 major shopping Centres. I seriously believe Keilor Downs is the most affordable suburb to live in. It is a 10 minute drive to Melbourne Airport & 20 minute drive to Melbourne CBD. We have 3 gym’s that are within walking distance & 2 train stations. Keilor Downs is within the heart of everything that you need without the traffic. Police station is walking distance & so is the fire brigade. The Sunshine hospital is only 10 minutes away. I have absolutely nothing negative to say about this suburb.... love it.
