Moving to Brisbane

We are transferring to Brisbane from Sydney in January 2011, and I'm trying to work out where to live.

For those who know Sydney and Melbourne, we are after an area which is similar to Balmain/ albert park/ middle park. Somewhere with shopping, restaurants, real community vibe, predominantly families (not transient backpackers or uni students or similar), very safe, quiet (but where you can walk up the road for dinner, drinks, breakfast shopping etc), parks, nice people and roperties, close to the city. We are currently thinking of Bulimba, Balmoral, Hawthorne or possibly Ascot. If anyone has a view on these areas that would be great, together with any views on the best or worst streets/areas within the areas.
