Looking for a home in Kilkenny?

"Kilkenny - halfway to everywhere"

We've lived in Kilkenny for almost 6 years and think it is fantastic little suburb. Wilpena terrace and surrounding streets towards West Croydon are especially quiet and have some great houses ranging from workers cottages from 100 years back to brand new quality houses (and anything in-between), Public transport is excellent, whether heading to City, 10 minutes on train, Grange beach 10 minutes by train, Port Adelaide 10 minutes by bus or train. Shopping is all nearby. Arndale shopping center is actually much better than its reputation and there are two 24 hours service stations on David Tce. On the downside, there are some unsightly and possibly unhealthy(?) industry around the area, including the class factory in adjacent West Croydon but at least the prefabricated concrete plant next to railway has now closed down. Some of the industrial buildings, primarily between the station and Port Road have been empty for years. One would hope that when the government initiative for TOD gets this far down the Port Road/Railway line that they'll redevelop the old industrial area as an extension to the current reserve or as housing. Time will tell.
Most of streets are quiet and it feels generally safe place to live. Neighbours are friendly but not too friendly, There are 2 primary schools and bordering West Croydon and there is a fantastic reserve with tennis courts, playground etc near the railway line. Me, my wife and my kids love living in Kilkenny.

It's an alright part of town but I would not shop there. It's twice the distance as going to Tea Tree Plaza for someone living in the Eastern Suburbs and is more downmarket.

"Close to the CBD and underrated"

Kilkenny is a quaint little suburb, which is not quite as well known as its neighbours Croydon and West Croydon. Unfortunately it is best known for the closeness to Arndale shopping centre, which, if you value your life and/or car still being there once you leave it, you'll avoid like the plague. Try Welland instead. This establishment is fortunately as far away from the best parts of Kilkenny as possible, as the closer to Port Road you are the nicer it is. Public transport is fantastic, with the oft-frequented train station and Go Zones on Port Road getting you to the city in under 15 minutes. After Midnight buses also operate in the area for those nights you come home after the last train service has passed.
Generally the streets are leafy and quiet, and aside from the occasional bogan driving down the long streets (we need a roundabout!), it is a safe area to walk around at all times. There is a massive park with tennis courts and BBQ facilities near the station which is great for dog walking and kids, and you're bound to bump into someone you know from around the area.
The period-style homes nearer the train line ooze character, and really aspire to be what their more-expensive cousins in Croydon are, yet we could do with some coffee shops and cafés - we walk to Queen street instead.

I've just moved to West Croydon from NZ and I people have told me it's dodgy, but this is paradise compared to the area I came from (Porirua, Wellington) I've heard a lot about Elizabeth though which is compared to Porirua so my Kiwi mates say, so will avoid that like the plague.

Thats good to hear Jowlz, since I live in Wellington and work in Porirua - I was looking for information that might give me guidance on the surrounding area. I see it is the 189th best area in SA... As long as I can find something and go to work, I'll be fine.
