Reviews of Leeton, NSW

"Great town... not so great people"

Leeton in itself is a great little town. It has clean air, clean streets and a generally nice atmosphere. The local river is lovely and we have a lot of small, enjoyable events like the Rice Festival and Leeton Show. There isn't much shopping here but the basics are available so you won't find yourself stuck for supplies, and there is the city Wagga Wagga nearby which has everything you can't find here.
The rent is cheap as chips here, though not many places allow pets and some areas such as Wattle Hill and Parkview can be bad for break-and-enters on occasion. Though for the most part it is a safe town to live in.

At first the general social life here may seem friendly (and there are many kind faces here) but once you live here for a while you soon come to realize that there is a social hierarchy here among many of the residence. I wouldn't recommend living here if you're worried about discrimination because this town has a bad reputation for isolating and bad-mouthing anyone who doesn't fit the status quo. Many people here end up with a social stigma for things as little as their fashion sense, culture or sexuality.
On the good side though, most people are willing to help out with anything you may need and your neighbors will often look out for you and your home. The shop keepers are often friendly and will often give you advice and a helping hand with almost anything. No one is openly rude.

As for crime, there is a big drug problem here, some even dealing in public or over-the-counter in the local stores, also watch your drink at local pubs and clubs as spiking does occur. There is also high domestic violence crimes here, and an average amount of 'creeps' that wonder around during late hours. I wouldn't wander around this area at dusk or at night alone. The police are friendly, but not always reliable.

As for children, it's surprisingly a great place for kids. There are plenty of parks and small shops for them to hang out at, and we have a movie theater here too. The schools are generally friendly, though there can be a little bit of bullying on occasion to some students in certain schools. The roads and pathways are often safe and friendly for bikes and scooters, and many kids will make friends in their neighborhood as everyone tends to know everyone else.

I wouldn't recommend this place for young adults and teenagers though, not only because of the drug problem but because there is very little to do in this area for that age group. There isn't much in the terms of education either, there's a local tafe but there aren't many course options.

Part-time work can be hard to get here at times, and only certain lines of work are available.
Retail, hair-dressing/beauty, office-work, labor work, waiter/waitress work, hospitality, and factory work is the most common job openings.

Mental health care and general health care is poor here. You may have to travel for decent health services.

"Leeton - forget the crowds just relax."

Located half way between Sydney and Melbourne, Leeton in the heart of the Riverina. This town is near the Murrumbidgee River and offers the visitor plenty to see including the Sunrice centre, Yanco Powerhouse Museum and miniature railway, Whitton Courthouse and Historical Museum as well as the many wineries, and orchard in the area. The Murrumbidgee River offers some great water sports and fishing with sandy beaches ideal for a picnic. Leeton has excellent shopping facilities with large shopping centers, cinema and many specialty stores. Accommodation ranges from camping and caravan parks to motels, hotels, guest houses and B&B’s with all facilities. Great place to visit and relax away from the crowds.
