"Great Town"

Manjimup is a great place to live I have been here my whole life and as a kid it’s a great place including the new park and to grow up in a rural town is so rewarding. It’s got a great community spirit with lots of groups and sports teams to get involved with. There is also a lot of new café and restraunts to eat out in and take away at most places.

"A place for everyone"

Manjimup has something for the whole family. I have lived here my whole life and love that we are still a country town that is full of history surrounded by farmlands and national parks, outdoor adventures, and abundance of fresh produce.
Manjimup is the service centre of the neighboring towns and has three primary schools, two high schools and childcare facilities. A newly Built Hospital, Three Doctors clinics, an over fifty lifestyle village and age care home, A small shopping precinct with Coles and Woolworths. There is plenty of newly established cafes and restaurants and soon to be a nightclub for the young people.
Manjimup also has a number for community groups to join and most sporting clubs are available for you to participate in. If the quieter activity is your thing you have Repertory, Photography clubs, Arts Group and a community garden.
Manjimup is all about getting out and about there is hundreds of kilometers of 4wd tracks through Nation Forests, motocross at Cosy Creek or the world class Munda Biddi and mountain bike tracks,
For the major events there is the iconic Warren Agricultural Show, Truffle Kefuffle and the Cherry Harmony Festival.
For the kids they will love hanging out at the Manjimup Timber and Heritage Park, Manjin skate Park, or swim at Fonty’s Pool, Donnelly River, Glenoran Pool and One tree Bridge.
Manjimup is a small community were everyone knows everyone, but you can easily fit into the country lifestyle and make this town your home.

"A Great Place to Live"

We moved to Manjimup in 2007 from a small town of 400 people approximately 300km North of Perth. When we arrived - wow! It was like living in a city suburb. We were amazed at the number of shops and services available to us and the friendliness of all the locals who welcomed us to town.

Over the past 4 years, the town has suffered due to the economic climate (like all towns and suburbs across Australia both city and country). Shops, cafes and restaurants, and some industries have suffered and closed their doors. Those that remain open remain positive in the hope that things will improve. I believe that the town will improve in the short term, and the prospect of a "Super Town" and what may eventuate is somewhat exciting.

Our children are now of school age, and we are very impressed by the quality of schooling provided in a country town. The schools all provide a safe quality learning environment for our children. Our children are not lost in the education system that may have been the case if we were living in the city. Personalised and caring education is of a huge importance to us.

We make the most of living in a centralised country location, often visiting surrounding towns on weekends and exploring what the region has to offer. Everything is so close! Wineries, beaches, majestic forests all within a one hour drive.

As with living in any country town, we feel it is up to you to make it what you want it to be. For example, if there is a lack of nightlife, create your own. We are never at a lost end and always have plenty to do with the lifelong friends we have made here in Manjimup.

Manjimup is a great place to live, and we couldn't be happier. All country towns have their issues (whether it be entertainment, lack of doctors etc) but being proactive helps. Rather than sitting on your opinions, being involved helps create a town's identity and makes life what it is all about. We love it here, and don't see ourselves leaving for a very long time, if at all.

Great for

  • Quality of education
  • Easy access to other towns and sights in the SW
  • Friendliness of most people

Manjilocal, if you want credibility, you really, need to put a balanced view. For example, what are the cons that you see ? If you cannot see any at all, you do need to have a close look at the number of businesses that have closed down in the past year, the lack of medical facilities, and no restaurants for dinner apart from the pub or Chinese as examples.

lovenature

Manjiloval, incidentally, you do need to update and revise your ratings. This is a must.

Please consider below what you have rated and, well, the reality:

Criteria :

"Resale and rental value" : You had given 5 stars. Amazing ! The reality is a SINGLE star. We have had a huge crash in real estate prices. See graphs and analyses on real estate.com.au

"Schools": You had rated this criteria as worthy of FIVE stars and this is amazing. The reality is a SINGLE star. For references, consult the level of illiteracy in Manjimup.

It would be much appreciated if you update your ratings to make them more credible.

"Peace and Quiet": You had put 5 stars. The reality is 3 stars, max. refer to Police for references

"Safe and Sound": You had given FOUR stars. The reality is TWO stars max. ( because of the drugs problems and the level of petty crimes)

manjilocal

love nature: I have considered what I rated, and please tell me of any towns in WA let alone Australia where these things are not an issue?

5 stars for Resale and Rental Value: A few of our friends have rental properties and the demand for these are huge. The rental return is fantastic, well and truly above the minimum 8% return that investors desire.

FIVE stars for Schools: how many towns with a population of 5000 have 3 schools? You mention illiteracy - a parent is the primary educator of their children. Perhaps blame parents not schools. Kearnan College has an amazing focus on literacy, starting in Kindergarten. How can you not give that 5 stars?

Peace and Quiet - again 5 stars. We have lived in 4 different locations in Manjimup and have never had an issue with peace and quiet. Yes occasionally on a Friday or Saturday night there is a bit more noise, but hey, where can you live where there isnt a noise issue?

Safe and Sound - we have never had an issue with safety. I have walked home on numerous occasions and night and never felt unsafe. Yes there are the odd issue (mainly alcohol influenced near the pub etc) but I feel completely safe.

These ratings and my review are based on MY PERSONAL OPINION. I realise that this may not reflect the general view of the town folk, however I feel if you focus on the negatives you get no where.

Manjimup deserves more credit for its location and lifestyle. All towns have issues, and I realise Manjimup has some. I prefer however to look at what is here and the positives that are here.

"A Backward town stuck in the 70s"

Manjimup is a very unfriendly town that is the most clicky I have ever lived in. Sure the land is beautiful and productive with oodles of water but it is a terrible place to live. There is no culture, no art, no community and definately no-where to go out for a nice meal. The shire is a joke with the Shire president only interested in things that benefit his trucking company. Any new business that opens is not supported, any vibrant people that shift here are not welcomed. The only thing to do is play sport and drink and thats about all the locals do (that and drive their flash fords and holdens around town) Even their big Cherry festival is a complete disaster being the worst festival in the southwest and it does have the potential to be great but the locals stuck in a 1970s time warp and have lost touch with the outside world. Property may be cheap but thats because no-one in their right mind would live here. WE are a vibrant young family living here for the last 5years and we can't WAIT to leave this place and move somewhere where a community does want our business and input.

Not great for

  • Unfriendly locals
  • No restaurants
  • No culture or community
  • Cannot get a family doctor
  • Noise from large trucks coming to and fro
  • Over 300 kms from Perth
  • Lots of drugs

Jasadu, you raise some interesting points, some of which we dont completely disagree with, but can you tell me of any towns that do readily support new business without some element of doubt? Yes it is hard to open a new business in some towns, but it's a hurdle you will face in any town.
In terms of the cherry festival, it is a case of the same people being on the organising committee. Why not get on board and provide some input which may help things change rather than being like everyone else in town who has their opinions but arent actually willing to put any thing into action. If you dont like it, dont whinge about it, get involved and help it change for the better.
Things to do in town - yes there are limited options. But again, do something about it, dont sit back and whinge. We dont have any problem in finding things to do on weekends or after work... there is so much to do!

And really, if you are seriously that set on leaving, just do it. Find a town that wants your business and so called input. I'm sure your input could've been taken on board if you provided constructive criticism to those you are referring to, rather than using a forum such as this to voice your opinions.

Manjilocal, Your problem is that you are at one extreme and Jasadu at the other extreme opinions about Manjimup. I have been in Manjimup for a while now, and, my opinion is that JASADU is entirely correct and TRUE but, unfortunately, his comments and yours are one eyed only. Having said that, I find it absolutely disgusted and very concerned abut the paucity of services such as in Manjimup , one cannot get a family doctor or GP and the hospital is a bit like the old iconic song by Dusty " The Town Without a Pub". Well, here in Manjimup, we have a hospital without doctors and health services ( eg. physiotherapy, psychologist, occupational health, etc...). However, on the other hand, one has to acknowledge that we have subsidised great services from HACC and PATT to help us get to Bunbury for medical treatments ( HACC) and to Perth ( PATT) as examples of aid to the community.

"A small town - where everybody knows your name, your business and if they dont they will make it up!"

Manji is beautiful at first then the locals get under your skin! book your illness in advance as there is a 8wk waiting list for appointments at the drs. dont go to the pub on friday nights unless you like street brawls. do your homework on the shire first, very slack... choose your area to live carefully, if the house is cheap, there is a reason for it.

Whoopsie, you provided a prety good balanced view with pros and cons and recommendations. There is one "Con" I discovered and could not believe it : illiteracy. I just cannot believe that in 2012, Australia has still many adults who cannot read and write very simple texts. This is absolutely a "red faced" matter for Australia as an advanced and rich country. Drugs are also pervasive in the community and I don't knnow why. This is a huge issue of concerns especially the range of people and age groups indulging and being addicted to illicit drugs.

"Can be a great place to fully own your home if you can tolerate the Cons."

Manjimup has kept some of the good old fashioned Australian ways : For example, at the local pub, you can put your money on the bar and leave it there for the bar tenders to deduct the correct amount from that money everytime you have a drink. Nobody will touch your money. You never see that in the cities, except in the 70's when I migrated to Australia.

On the downside, no chemist at all after 1.00 PM on saturday all the way to Monday 9.00 AM. This applies for all towns around Manjimup unless you drive at least 200kms, return trip. Only two options for evening dining at a restaurant in Manjimup : Pub or Chinese and their hours are very tight.

Generally speaking , most people are friendly and easy to approach

Relative Proximity to total wilderness is a HUGE advantage. The Southern Ocean beaches are absolutely fantastic.

Very concerning if you have an enduring medical condition. There are, basically, no family GPs doctors available for new residents in Manjimup.

Great for

  • A very rare area in Australia where you can buy your home for under $200K
  • Easy access to other towns and sights in the SW
  • Beautiful big old trees
  • A rare place in Australia to buy a house under $200K
  • Friendliness of most people
  • No traffic jams and parking easily available and, FREE !!

Not great for

  • Can be difficult to secure a family doctor
  • 300 kms from Perth to get, for example, specialised medical treatment

"Friendly town with modern facilities"

WA INFO
Located in the south west area of the state Manjimup is 307 kms from Perth. The area is has good water supplies and fertile soils ideal for agriculture. Manjimup has a population of over 5,000 and has excellent facilities including a great shopping centre with supermarkets, specialty shops for all your requirements. The town relies on industries such as timber and farming as well as fruit and vegetable products with walnuts being a leader. There are primary and secondary schools here both state and catholic and there are also preschools and day care centres. The town is well serviced by good medical centres and a well equipped district hospital. Transport to and from Manjimup is easy these days and the town has an airport as well. Dining out is a pleasure with many restaurants, cafes and wineries and well as several clubs. The area has good sporting facilities with playing fields, indoor heated pool, motocross tracks and a splendid golf course. Buying property in Manjimup is very affordable with prices for a three bedroom home well below $500K and many bargains are around for the serious buyer. Rentals are a good alternative with price well with most budgets.

Think you may need to update your review as the town is dying with no speciality shops but lots of empty ones. No restaurants with the only decent one closing its doors from ohyes thats right a lack of local support and no tourism. Good doctors??? You can no longer get to see one in Manjimup. Don't give people false ideas about this town its not fair to them.

manjilocal

jasadu - If you are referring to the restaurant we think you are, the media have made out that it was lack of local support and tourism that was the driving force. That is certainly not the case... there are more than enough tourists frequenting the region, and the locals were definitely supportive. We know FOR A FACT that this was not the reason behind it's closure, so get your facts right.
Doctors, yes there arent enough in town, but how many towns in country Australia not just WA, have doctor shortages? Drive to Perth if you must. We too, are a young "vibrant" family as you refer to yourselves as, and we have never had an issue getting in to see a doctor.

lots of bickering going on here, hope its not a true representation of the town, we have seen other towns with nothing but praise for the area = 9/10 rating ,only cons being the usual nothing to do ,no nightlife we see manjimup is 6/10... no doctors is a bad outlook for anyone especially families no matter where it is....Cheers
